David James Burgess 1955-1986

David James Burgess, a son of Dorothy and Jack Burgess, was born in Garden City, Kansas on January 13, 1955, and departed this life on October 23, 1986 in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 31 years.  He spent most of his life in Lansing, Kansas.

At the age of 10, David professed his faith in Jesus Christ and became a member of the Deerfield Southern Baptist Church in Deerfield, Kansas.  He was baptized by his father.  At the time of his death he was a member of the Nall Avenue Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kansas.

David graduated from Lansing High School in 1973, and then attended Kansas University, and received a degree in Physical Education.  He also attended school and became a licenses beautician, and managed several hair salons in Kansas City.

Prior to his death David was a teachers aid in the Kansas City Elementary Public School System.

He is survived by his parents Jack and Dorothy Burgess of Lansing, Kansas; one brother Billy Dean Burgess of Lansing, Kansas; one sister, Lois Jean Owen of Leavenworth, Kansas; his paternal grandparents, Alonzo and Julia Burgess of Hazelgreen, and his maternal grandmother Mrs. Claudine Newell of Richland, other relatives and many friends.

David is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, James Newell.

Funeral services were from Colonial Funeral Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 1986 with Rev. Dan Redmond officiating.

Music was provided by Rusty Shadel, soloist and Marcia Shadel, organist.

Burial was in the Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapels.

Escorts were Kenneth Newell, Jimmy Burgess, Leo McDaniel, Keith Owen, Gerry Burgess, and George Henson.

Lois Lee (Long) Burgess 1931-1984

Lois Lee Burgess, of Crocker, Missouri, was born on November 9, 1931 in Pulaski County, Missouri, the daughter of Willis and Dorca (McComb) Long and departed this life on January 16, 1984 at her home in Crocker, Missouri. She had attained the age of 52 years, 2 months, and 7 days.

Lois was a member of the First Christian Church of Crocker. She greatly enjoyed the outdoors.

She is survived by her husband, Donald E. Burgess of Crocker, Missouri; her son and his wife: Jody and Pam Burgess of Crocker, Missouri; her parents: Willis and Dorca Long, of Crocker, Missouri; 1 brother Leonard Long, of Brumley, Missouri; 2 sisters: Wanda Mashburn of Brumley, Missouri, Bernadine Duncan of Iberia, Missouri and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, January 19, 1984 at the Christian Church of Crocker, Missouri at 2 p.m. with Merwyn McMillan officiating.

Burial was in the Crocker Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Long Moss Williams Funeral Home of Crocker.

Pallbearers were: Andy lowe, Harold Burnett, Bud Newcomb, Don Hodgen, Bob Malmberg, and Jess Peterson.

Popular Crocker Law Officer Dies Last Friday
Had Been Ill for Several Weeks
Funeral Sunday

Harold E. (Sweetcake) Burgess, 42, passed away at his home in Crocker Friday morning following a lingering illness. He had been a patient in the Veterans Hospital at Jefferson Barracks for several weeks and suffered a stroke at his home from which he expired.

“Sweetcake” who had spent his entire life in Crocker, except for the time spent in service, was known and liked by a host of friends, having served as Marshall of Crocker for two terms, his last term expiring this spring. He was a able and fearless law enforcement officer and his aid was often sought by state and county officials in the solving of various crimes. He was naturally of a kindly disposition, which endeared him to his children and grown-ups alike, but he could be tough when the occasion called for it.

Mr. Burgess was a member of the Christian Church at Crocker, the American Legion and the International Order Of Oddfellows lodge. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Crocker Christian Church with the pastor, Arthur Gott, officiating. One of the largest crowds in recent years was present to pay a last tribute to a beloved citizen and friend. A military escort from Fort Leonard Wood was present and military rites at the graveside were conducted by the Crocker Legion Post. Interment was made in the Crocker Cemetery under direction of Hedges Funeral Home of Crocker.

Mr. Burgess is survived by his wife, Carrie, nine children, seven boys and two girls; his mother, Mrs. Betty Burgess, of Crocker, three brothers: Roy, Herbert, and Bill, all of Crocker.
