Carl David Deaton 1924-2006

Carl David Deaton was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, to the union of Isaac “Ike” Nugent Deaton and Winnie (Lamb) Deaton.

He grew up in Texas and at the early age of 16 began his lifetime career with the Greyhound Corporation in Abilene, Texas.

Carl was united in marriage with Pauline “Polly” Virginia Deaton on Oct. 26, 1947, in Little Rock, Ark. Polly and Carl shared nearly 58 years of marriage prior to her death on July 15, 2005.

After serving a four-year tour of duty with the U.S. Navy during World War II, Carl returned to the Greyhound Corporation and began moving up the ladder. He lived and worked in Arkansas, Kansas and California before settling down in Waynesville in 1969. At that time, he and his wife purchased the Greyhound Bus Station at Fort Leonard Wood. They operated the station for a number of years before they retired.

Carl was a longtime faithful member and supporter of the Waynesville United Methodist Church, where he served in several positions throughout the years. He was also active in the Lions Club and once served as a Boy Scout leader while living in California. Carl loved traveling, collecting toy Greyhound bus replicas and reading.

After a short hospital stay in Conroe, Texas, Carl went home to be with his Lord the evening of Sept. 5, 2006, at the age of 82.


 Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Polly Deaton; and his parents, Ike and Winnie. He leaves behind one daughter, Nancy Schweigart of Houston, Texas; one granddaughter, Virginia Deaton; and one grandson, David Puchlettner of North Carolina; one great-granddaughter, Lillian Ruth Deaton; one brother, Ed Deaton of Sulphur Springs; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in Little Rock, Ark., under the direction of Griffin, Leggett, Healy and Roth, with the Rev. James Lumpkin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Waynesville United Methodist Church.

Carl was truly a good man and will be missed by all who knew him.

Pauline Virginia (Kindy) Deaton 1929-2005

Pauline Virginia Deaton was born January 5, 1929 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was one of ten children born to the union of William Harrison and Pearl Leona (Treadway) Kindy.

Polly grew up in the Mablevale area where she was a 1944 graduate of Mablevale High School.

On October 26, 1947 in Little Rock, Polly was united in marriage with Carl D. Deaton. Polly and Carl shared nearly 58 years of marriage and one daughter, Nancy.

In the early 1960s, Polly worked at The Gas Company in Kansas City, Kansas. In 1963, Polly and Carl moved to Walnut Creek, California where she went to work at a Lane Bryant store. In 1969, the Deatons moved to Waynesville, Missouri where they operated the Southwestern Greyhound Station on Fort Leonard Wood, and Polly served as Vice President and Treasurer of PolCar, Inc.

Polly was a long time, faithful member and supporter of the Waynesville United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Old Stagecoach Stop Foundation, BPW, Lioness Club and was a 50 year member of Beta Sigma Phi. She served as President of the Tuesday morning Coffee Bowling League, the Wednesday Night Ladies Bowling League and served as Secretary of the Rolla Womens Bowling League for several years. She bowled in state and national tournaments for over 30 years. Polly also served as a Girl Scout Leader in California. She loved bird watching, collecting cookbooks and recipes and was a wonderful seamstress. She loved her family and her Yorkie and Silky Terriers, Shih Tzu, Poodles and her Siamese cats. Polly was a sweet, kind and very loving woman who touched everyone she met.

After a long struggle, Polly went home to be with her Lord the morning of July 15, 2005, surrounded by her beloved family at her home in Waynesville, Missouri, at the age of 76 years,

She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband: Carl of the home; her daughter: Nancy Schweigart of Houston, Texas; two sisters: Edna Beck of Hensley, Arkansas and Marie Griffis of Little Rock, Arkansas; two brothers: James Kindy of Perryville, Arkansas and Bobby Kindy of Conroe, Texas; one granddaughter: Virginia Deaton and one grandson: David Puchlettner both of Wellsville, New York; one great granddaughter: Lillian Ruth Deaton along with several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Polly was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Pearl; one sister: Ola Faye Faulkner; two brothers: Johnny and Lloyd Kindy; one infant sister and one infant brother.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, July 17, 2005 in the Waynesville United Methodist Church with Pastor Londia Granger Wright officiating. The church choir sang "Amazing Grace, "Nearer My God To Thee and "His Eye Is On The Sparrow. Pollys daughter, Nancy and several friends shared several precious memories of Polly.

A graveside service was held at 3:00 P.M. Monday, July 18, 2005 in the Upchurch Cemetery of Saline County, Arkansas with Pastor Londia Granger Wright officiating. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.
