Ardilara (Scott) Duncan (1854-1906)

OBITUARY

Died; at her home near Spring Creek Phelps county, April 3, 1906. Mrs. Ardilara, widow of the late John R. Duncan aged 51 years 7 months and 2 days.

Mrs. Duncan was born in Warren county Tennessee Aug, 31^st, 1854, her maiden name was Scott, and she was married to John R. Duncan at Bloodland September 19^th, 1872 and became step-mother to three children and mother of eight children, three have passed on before with one step-daughter, Mrs. Elmer Duncan, five children survive her. Mrs. Duncan was a true mother and grandmother several of whom she cared for so faithfully. May God in mercy comfort the bereaved ones so suddenly deprived of a mothers love and care. Some months ago she was partially paralyzed, and on Tuesday, morning at 11 she received a second stroke and passed away the same evening at five o’clock p.m. ---J.J. Watts

Cindy Sue Sellers 1958-2008

Cindy Sue Sellers, daughter of Warren Brooks and Ophelia Mae (Hamilton) Duncan, was born March 23, 1958 in Waynesville, Missouri at the DeWitt Clinic. Cindy grew up in the Dixon, Missouri area and graduated from Dixon Public School in 1976.

As a young girl, Cindy accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized. She was a lifelong and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Dixon. Her life was characterized by loving and worshipping her Savior-knowing Jesus and making him known.

On August 12, 1977, Cindy was united in marriage to James Craig Sellers in Dixon, Missouri. They shared over 30 wonderful years of marriage together and were blessed with two children: Kaleb Craig and Amanda Rose.

Cindy worked for a time as a florist in St. Robert, Missouri before attaining her lifelong goal of being able to stay at home and become, as her children called her, mommy extraordinaire. She was a wonderful mother and loving wife and was proud of the fact that she could stay home and take care of her family. In her spare time, Cindy enjoyed being outdoors; whether it was gardening or enjoying Gods creation. She loved to travel and go antiquing. She was a wonderful cook and she was best known for her quick wit and good sense of humor. Most importantly, she treasured the times that she spent with her family and friends.

Cindy went home to be with her Lord the evening of Wednesday, April 9, 2008 in the St. Johns Regional Health Center of Springfield, Missouri at the age of 50 years and 12 days.

Cindy will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by her husband, Craig of the home; one son: Kaleb Sellers of Dixon, MO; one daughter: Amanda Sellers of Dixon, MO; her mother: Ophelia Duncan of Dixon, MO; one brother: Dale Duncan and his wife Sharon of Ashland, MO; brothers and sisters-in-laws: Larry and Connie Sexton of Rolla, MO and Johnny and Billie Jean Dalton of Kansas City, MO; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cindy was preceded in death by her father: Brooks Duncan; one brother: Terry Duncan; and her mother and father-in-law: Bill and Melba Sellers.

Cindys Christian walk was not only the most important part of her life " it was her lifes reason.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 12, 2008 in the First Baptist Church of Dixon, Missouri with Rev. Brandon McCombs officiating. Marlene Johnson, a dear friend of Cindys, read the obituary. The First Baptist Church Worship Team led the congregation in singing Blessed Be the Name of the Lord, I Can Only Imagine, Healing Rain and Fill Me With You. Serving as escorts were John Hargis, Danny Milligan, Chris Paterson, Stevie Shelton, Tommy Shelton and Lynn Whitten. Serving as honorary escorts were Ray Baker and Bill Harrison.

Burial followed in the Sellers Cemetery of Davisville, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

Willia (Tiny) Duncan 1935-2012

Willia (Tiny) Duncan, 76, of Evening Shade, Mo., passed away in her home on April 27, 2012. Tiny was born in Memphis, Tenn., on June 23, 1935.

After spending many years as a military wife traveling the country, she settled in the Ft. Leonard Wood area when her first husband, Robert May, retired from the military. She earned two BA degrees from Drury University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. For many years she worked for the Social Security Administration before becoming licensed as a real estate agent and broker. Tiny was the owner of Lighthouse Realty and sold real estate throughout the Ft. Leonard Wood area for over 20 years. After the death of her first husband, Robert May, Tiny married Ted Duncan and enjoyed many happy years together until his death in 1995.

Tiny was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Diel and Bertha (Boutwell) Diel; a brother, Bobby Diel; granddaughter, Kimberly Smith; and a great-grandchild, Jonathan May.

She is survived by her children, Beth Jones of Dallas, Texas; her sons, Gary May and wife, Jane, and Bill May and wife, Gail, of Springfield, Mo. Tiny is also survived by her sister, Billie Gross of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by niece, Cheryl Josephson; an “adopted” granddaughter, Kendra James; two nephews, Randy and Doug James; and family and grand nephew, Travis James.

Visitation is 1-2 p.m. Friday May 4, 2012, at Evans Funeral Home. Services are 2 p.m. with Wesley Wallace officiating. Pallbearers are Jeff Brown, Greg Brown, Donald Atterberry, Doug James, Donnie Duncan and Richard Gower. Burial will be in Palace Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.

Colette (Bobbitt) Duncan 1918-2010

Colette (Bobbitt) Duncan passed away January 2, 2010 at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 15 days.

Colette was the youngest of seven children born to the union of the late Charles Presley and Ida (Chalfant) Bobbitt. She was born on July 18, 1918 at Zebra, Missouri, on the family farm, which is now under the Lake of the Ozarks.

Colette was a descendant of two early pioneer families in Missouri. Her great grandfather, Louis P. Chalfant, settled in “old” Linn Creek in 1855, and the Bobbitt family settled close to the Missouri River near Glasgow in the 1840’s. Colette’s parents were long time postmasters at the Zebra Post Office. Charles also served as the Camden County Probate Magistrate. Upon his death, Ida was appointed to finish his term, and was re-elected to that position for several more terms. Charles and Ida moved their family from Zebra to “old” Linn Creek and then to a farm near Montreal. Colette graduated from Stoutland High School in 1936.

In 1941, Colette married Obert Duncan at Linn Creek, Missouri. This union was blessed with one daughter, Janice. Colette and Obert made their home in Waynesville. Obert preceded Colette in death in 1951.

Colette and Obert owned and operated “Duncan’s Clothing” store along with other businesses in Waynesville for many years. She later worked at Ft. Leonard Wood. She loved being a member of the Hanson Chapter 22 Order of the Eastern Star, and was very proud when she received her 50 year pin several years ago. She was a long time, faithful member of Concord Christian Church.

Colette will be greatly missed by her daughter and son-in-law Janice and Allen Haynes of Windsor, Colorado; grandson: Jeffrey Haynes and wife, Suzanne and sons, Griffin and Remington (and one on the way); grandson: Bryan Haynes and wife, Lori and daughters, Ella, Maggie and Brynn; along with many other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, her husband, and her long time companion: Lloyd Madden, Colette was preceded in death by six siblings: Henry “Tucker”, George, Paul and Fred Bobbitt, Muriel Bobbitt and Sciota Halliburton.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 6, 2010, in the Memorial Chapel of Richland with Rev. Lee Todd officiating. Bob Payne presented a lovely eulogy. Soloist / Pianist ~ Becky Lercher sang “Church in the Wildwood” and “It Is Well With My Soul”. Serving as escorts were Bryan Haynes, Jack Wiener, Ralph Forester, Charles Mackney, Morris Howlett and Bob Groat. Honorary escorts were Jeff Haynes, Bob Payne, Don Shivers, Larry Peterson, James Shockley and Lyle Studer. Very special honorary escorts included Griffin Haynes, Ella Haynes, Remington Haynes, Maggie Haynes, Brynn Haynes and ( One on the Way!).

Burial followed in the Oaklawn Cemetery of Richland, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapel of Richland.

Cora Ann (Miller) Lane 1873-1958

Cora Ann Miller, daughter of Richard and Julia Ann (Kelly) Miller, was born at Millers Mill near Big Piney on March 16, 1873 and departed this life March 3, 1958 at the age of 84 years and 11 months.

She was married to Frank Duncan of Spring Creek, Missouri in 1897 and to this daughter came one daughter, Lucy Alleyne Duncan, was born. Mr. Duncan died in 1898 and her daughter died in 1931.

She was united in marriage to George W. Lane on April 26, 1905. They moved to Waynesville soon after their marriage where three children were born: Hazen Lane Adams, Bertie Lane Shultz, and George W. Lane Jr. Mr. Lane died in 1956 and Hazel Lane Adams died in 1932. Also preceeding her in death were her parents, one sister, Mollie Hogan, and a brother, Danny Miller.

She is survived by one daughter, Bertie of Kansas City, Missouri, one son, George W. Lane Junior of Waynesville, a granddaughter, Carolyn Roberts of Kansas City, Missouri, a great granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Roberts of Kansas City, Missouri, and one sister, Elizabeth Haley of St. Louis, Missouri.

She was a devoted wife, a wonderful mother, a kind and faithful friend and neighbor, and will be missed by a host of relatives and friends.

Lucy Alleyne Duncan 1897-1932

Lucy Alleyne Duncan was born Sept. 15, 1897 at Relfe, Phelps County, Missouri; and died in Waynesville, Missouri, July 24, 1932, aged 34 years, 10 months, and 9 days.

She was the daughter of Frank E. and Cora A. Duncan (nee Miller). Her father died in May, 1897- four months before she was born.

In April 1905 her mother was united in marriage with G.W. Lane of Waynesville, where she had resided for the past 27 years.

She leaves besides her mother and step-father, a half-sister and a half-brother, Bertie Lee Lane and George W. Lane, Jr.. She is also survived by one grandmother, Mrs. Lucy R. Duncan, of Newburg, aged 88 years, 5 uncles, 6 aunts, and many cousins and other relatives and a host of friends throughout the country. A half-sister, Mrs. Hazel Lane Adams, preceeded her to the grave last February.

She was converted and joined the Waynesville Baptist church when 13 years of age and lived a clean christian life until called home by her Master.

Sarah G.(Duncan) Henson 1829-1906

This entry is from the J.J. Watts collection. John J. Watts hailed from Warren, Maine and moved to the northern Ozarks of Missouri sometime after the Civil War. He was a circuit-riding Baptist Minister and his territory covered Phelps, Pulaski, and Texas Counties and parts of Maries and Dent Counties. He established a cemetery, Watt’s Lawn, which is located 1 mile West of J Highway, near the Pulaski County-Phelps County line. This collection covers 1878-1912.

Died at her home near Tribune, Post Office in Pulaski Co., MO, Sept. 26th 1906, Sarah G., wife of Andrew Jackson Henson, aged 76 ys., 10 ms., & 25 days. She was born in Jefferson Co., MO, Oct. 31th 1829 and was a daughter of the late Richard and Mary Duncan and was of a family of 11 children, 6 sons, & 5 daughters, all supposed to have passed away. Oct. 19th 1858 she was united in marriage with A.J. Henson at Oak Hill Methodist Church in Jefferson Co., MO, who survives her. One daughter was born unto them, Mary Alice Henson and who died Dec. 16th 1890, aged 26 ys, 4 ms, & 7 days. One grand-son survives, John Andrew Henson, born Sept. _0th 1888. Sister Henson & her twin sister Mary embraced a hope in Christ early in life & joined 1st the M.E. Church & later the Free Baptist Ch. I delivered a memorial discourse at Rolling Heath Ch. house Nov. 25th 1906 at 11 a.m. Text Phil. 1X21.
