Emma Alvira (Dickens) Perkins 1902-1985

Emma Alvira Perkins was born in Maries County, Missouri on July 29, 1902 the daughter of Charles and Hattie Scott Dickens and passed away suddenly on Saturday, December 28, 1985.  She had attained the age of 83 years.

She was united in marriage to Bryan Perkins and unto this union 2 sons and 2 daughters were born.  Bryan preceded her on February 14, 1985.

Emma is survived by her 2 sons, Donald of Dixon and Robert of Devine, Texas; 2 daughters, Ethel Merideth of Leavenworth, Kansas and Audrey Beck of Omaha, Nebraska; 1 brother Garrett Dickens of Cuba, 1 sister Jessie Lindner of Warrenton; 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 grandson Mark, 6 brothers, Floyd, Lonnie, Earl, Clyde, Russell and Roy, and 3 sisters, Bertha Hughes, Dollie Dickens and 1 infant.

She was a member of the Dixon Church of Christ approximately 20 years, having been baptized at age 21 in the First Christian Church.  She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held in the Long Chapel on Tuesday, December 31, 1985 at 2:00 p.m. with Charles Pitts officiating.  Burial was in the Dixon Cemetery.  Church of Christ Choir sang Beautiful Isle of Somewhere and The Old Rugged Cross.  Serving as her pallbearers were Herbert and Dean Perkins, Cheryl Tyberendt, Linda Wallingford, Kay Howarter, Phyllis Fischer and Gary Ramsey and Ronald Beck.

Bertha B. (Ballenger) Perkins 1893-1982

Bertha B. Perkins, daughter of Benjamin and Rosa B. Ballenger, was born July 1, 1893 in Pulaski County and departed this life July 19, 1982 at the age of 89 years.

She was united in marriage to Charley Perkins in 1915 and to this union was born a son, John, who died in infancy.

Bertha attended Elm Grove Baptist Church for many years. She and her husband lived in the Richland area all their life and in 1958 moved from the farm outside Richland into town.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 22, 1982 at 10:00 a.m. at the Colonial Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery under the direction of the Colonial Funeral Chapels.

Pallbearers were Randall Pemberton, Alfred Zeigenbein, , Walter Holloway, Danny Zeigenbein, Greg Zeigenbein, Gerald Marso.

Honorary pallbearers were Delbert Holloway, Clyde Eakens, Aubrey Oliver, Alfie Powers.

She leaves three nieces, Ruth Carroll of Richland; Minnie Remley of Reno, Nevada, Lois Ryan, Anaheim, California; two nephews, John Perkins of Anaheim, California and Everett Perkins of Whittier, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charley, who passed away May 30, 1975 and an infant son, John.

John “Jack” E. Perkins 1930-2008

BLACK RIVER FALLS - John “Jack” E. Perkins, age 77, of Black River Falls, WI, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, in Black River Memorial Hospital.

Jack was born on March 8, 1930 in Woodruff, WI, to John A. and Mabel (Melton) Perkins. He was raised in Spooner, WI., and graduated from Spooner High School in 1948. After receiving a football scholarship, he attended the UW-Madison for one year.

Recognizing his duty to serve his country, he enlisted in the United States Army in September of 1950 as an engineer. From 1951 through 1952, and again from 1957 through 1960, he served beside his comrades in Korea. From 1952 through 1954, and from 1963 to 1965 he was stationed in Germany, and from 1967 through 1968, he again stood beside his comrades in Vietnam.

In 1963, while on leave, he took on a whole new mission. This mission would prove to be tougher than any military mission.

He became the loving, kind, and generous husband to Julia (Iverson) Smothers on Oct. 21, 1963, in Winona, MN. Although married in Minnesota, he had no feelings for the Vikings.

Jack did not need a war to show his bravery. With his marriage to Julia, he accepted the care and love of her six children.

If this new responsibility didn’t scare him, nothing could or would.

The new family lived in Millston, WI, until 1965, when they moved to Waynesville, MO. While in Missouri, Jack was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood Army Base. He completed leadership academy school with high honors, and he achieved the rank of platoon sergeant.

After 20 years of active duty, Jack retired from the Army in November of 1970.

He worked at the Ft. Leonard Wood Hospital from 1970 to 1972.

In 1972, he and Julia came to the conclusion that it was now time to come home. They moved to Jackson County and made their home in the Town of Adams.

Jack worked for the former Big Chief Truck Stop and Harkner’s Cranberry Marsh from 1972 to 1976. From 1976 until 1992, he worked at the Tomah VA Hospital. While there, he received numerous commendations for his fine work.

He was a pleasant, loving, and kind person. He enjoyed the quiet times he and the love of his life Julia had together. He coveted their pleasant bickering and red lipstick.

He will be sadly missed by all who met and touched his life, even if it was for just a moment. For those of us whose lives he revelled in, there will never be a replacement.

Mrs. Eliza Ellen (Wilson) Perkins 1865-1895

This entry is from the J.J. Watts collection. John J. Watts hailed from Warren, Maine and moved to the northern Ozarks of Missouri sometime after the Civil War. He was a circuit-riding Baptist Minister and his territory covered Phelps, Pulaski, and Texas Counties and parts of Maries and Dent Counties. He established a cemetery, Watt’s Lawn, which is located 1 mile West of J Highway, near the Pulaski County-Phelps County line. This collection covers 1882-1912.

Mrs. Eliza Ellen Perkins, wife of Edward Perkins and daughter of Sally Merrell, maiden name Wilson. She was born in Piney Township, Pulaski County, MO, Feb. 15, 1865, died on the Elbow Hollow, in Pulaski County, MO, July 16, 1895, aged 30 ys, 5ms, and 1 day. Her remains were taken from her home to the cemetery at the Wagon Ford School House where I preached a funeral sermon from Rev. 21X25 at 4 p.m., July 17, 1895 after which her remains were laid at rest at 5 p.m. Relatives: Mother, 4 brothers and 1 sister.
