Sylvia Ann (Ross) Kuhns 1908-1986

Sylvia Ann Kuhns was born in Pulaski County, Missouri on April 19, 1908 the daughter of Joseph and Oda Delancey Ross and passed away in the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla on April 20, 1986.  She had attained the age of 78 years and 1 day.

She was united in marriage to Adrain Kuhns on April 6, 1931 in Vienna and unto this union 2 sons and 3 daughters were born.

Sylvia is survived by her 2 sons, Stanley of Avon Park, Florida and Dewey of Cedar Hill, Missouri; 3 daughters, Audrey Humphrey of Dixon, Stella Dzieglewicz of Wildwood, Illinois and Jessie Decker of Dixon; 4 sisters, Sue Kuhns and Inez Page of Dixon, Bertha Kelley of Columbia and Cora Enloe of Wichita Falls, Texas, 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 10 step-great grandchildren with other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband Adrain on Jan. 11, 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

She was a member of the High Point Church of God, loved quilting, sewing, and working in her garden.  She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held in the Long Chapel on Wednesday, April 23, 1986 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. James Bailey officiating.  Burial was in the Dixon Cemetery.  Organist was Kathy Brandt and Soloist was Charlie Beltz.  Serving as her pallbearers were Keith Braun, John Bertuso, Bill Borrowes, Rodger Osborne, Maurice Wolfert, and Edward Humphrey.  Honorary pallbearers were Loren Ross and Russell Jones.

Ernest T. "Dutch" Ross 1906-1986

Ernest T. (Dutch) Ross was born a son of Joseph E. Ross and Oda Mae (Delancey) Ross on June 19, 1906 at Devils Elbow, Missouri, and he departed this life on Wednesday, April 2, 1986 at the Sunset Village of the Ozarks in Waynesville, Missouri, having attained the age of 79 years, 9 months, and 13 days.

“Dutch” was united in marriage to Julia (Wegener) Ross on June 25, 1932 at Clayton, Missouri, and to this union two children were born.  Mr. and Mrs. Ross had shared 54 years of love and devotion to each other.

He was a farmer in his early years.  He was a carpenter at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri during World War II, and he operated a service station and grocery store for twenty years.  He was also a float trip guide on many area rivers.  His favorite pass time was refinishing antique furniture.  He was an avid fisherman most of his life.

“Dutch” was a member of Masonic Lodge #375 A.F. and A.M. for forty-one years, and he was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #474.

“Dutch” is survived by his loving wife Julia of the home; one son, Robert of Longmont, Colorado and his daughter-in-law, Missy; one daughter, Shirley Wyatt and son-in-law, Charles of Gladstone, Missouri; six grandsons: Robert, Steven, and Alan Ross, Donald and Steven Wyatt, and James Camenisch; five sisters: Bertha Kelley of Columbia, Missouri, Cora Enloe of Wichita Falls, Texas, Susie and Sylvia Kuhns, and Inez Page, all of Dixon, Missouri; and a host of nieces and nephews; many other relatives, and friends.

“Dutch” will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, Sandra Elaine Wyatt; four brothers: Jesse, Herbert, Everett, and Percy; two sisters, Nellie Shelden and Edna Hunter.

Visitation was held in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel Friday, April 4, 1986 with Masonic Services held at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 5, 1986 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel with Rev. William Kempen officiating.  Music was provided by organist, Dorothy Moore, and Soloist

Mary Mae (Knapp) Ross 1904-2004

Mary Mae Ross, one of 13 children born to the union of the late John F. and Rebecca (Enlow) Knapp, was born October 18, 1904 at Center, Missouri in Ralls County.

On February 10, 1921, Mary was united in marriage with Claude E. Bowling, and to this union three children were born, Clarence E., Edna Mae and Evelyn Lucille. Claude preceded Mary in death in 1975. In 1978, Mary married Claude Ross who preceded her in death on June 2, 1994.

In 1947, Mary accepted the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized. She was of Pentecostal faith and was an Evangelist for years. She visited hospitals and nursing homes and preached there as her daughters and granddaughters played the music. Some years ago, Mary had a program on KJPW radio in St. Robert called "The Greatest Story Ever Told," sharing the Word with many people.

Along with her Evanglism ministry, Mary spent her years caring for her family and many of her friends. She also worked for a time as a seamstress at Fort Leonard Wood. While she was at home, she taught herself to type and play the piano. She played for church services until she lost her eyesight. She also enjoyed crocheting, writing songs and having children visit her.

Mary went home to be with her Lord the afternoon of April 22, 2004 at her granddaughters' home in Houston, Missouri, at the age of 99 years, 6 months and 4 days.

Mary will be greatly missed by her two daughters: Evelyn "Lucille" Moore of Plato, MO and Edna Mae Harwood of North Powder, OR; 1 sister: Ellen Briley of Springfield, OR; 12 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; her good friends: Pastors Earl and Pat Nichols of Newburg; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and her husbands, Mary was also preceded in death by her son: Clarence Bowling; a granddaughter: Evelyn Neeley; 11 brothers and sisters and a grandson-in-law: Bruce Carter.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 27, 2004 in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bill and Rev. Bob Knapp officating. The songs "Invite You to My Mansion" and "Living with My Master" were played. Serving as escorts were David Alkire, Jason Bowling, Timothy Bowling, Nalin Neal, Aaron Neeley and Ronald Thomas. Serving as honorary escorts were Claude Aichele, Doug Aichele, Andy, Calvin, Donald, Eddie, Roy Lee and Terry Bowling, Gary Curtner, Kellis Williams and numerous great-grandsons.

Burial followed in the Deerlick Cemetery of Waynesville, MO. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

James Hickman Ross 1840-1898

This entry is from the J.J. Watts collection. John J. Watts hailed from Warren, Maine and moved to the northern Ozarks of Missouri sometime after the Civil War. He was a circuit-riding Baptist Minister and his territory covered Phelps, Pulaski, and Texas Counties and parts of Maries and Dent Counties. He established a cemetery, Watt’s Lawn, which is located 1 mile West of J Highway, near the Pulaski County-Phelps County line. This collection covers 1878-1912.

James Hickman Ross, was born in Gibson County, West Tennessee, July 19, 1840, married 1st Martha E. Parker in Gibson County, April 5, 1866. He married, 2nd, in Pulaski County, MO, to Miss Isabelle A. McDonald, July 5, 1869 and died in Piney Township, Pulaski County, MO March 7, 1898, aged 57 ys, 7 ms and 18 ds. Singing, reading, prayer and exertation at his late residence and benediction at the grave, March 9, 1898 at 2:30 p.m. Escorted by the Odd Fellows and their service at the grave. Leaving 10 children living and 2 dead. A funeral discourse was preached in connection with his wife, at the Hopewell Church Sept. 18, 1898 at 11 a.m. by Elder T. J. Zumwalt, assisted by Watts from the text found in Gal. 3X9 and hymns used were No. 299 and 436. 9 children were present and Mollie was absent. J. J. Watts

Isabelle Adelia Ross 1853-1897

Emogene “Jeannie” Ross 1939-2009

DEVILS ELBOW – Emogene “Jeannie” Ross, 70 of Devils Elbow, a former school librarian, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, in her home. Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory.

Emogene “Jeannie” Ross, daughter of the late Percy Edwin and Lola Virgie (Thompson) Ross, was born February 28, 1939 in Devils Elbow, Missouri.

Jeannie, as she was known to her family and friends, grew up in the Morgan Heights area of Pulaski County. She attended school at several small rural schools, Anderson, Hooker and Mt. Gibson before attending and graduating from Waynesville High School in 1956.

After graduating from high school, Jeannie attended Drury University and then graduated with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Southwest Missouri State University, now known as Missouri State University. She then continued her education by obtaining her Master’s Degree from the University of Missouri.

Jeannie soon began teaching school and her first teaching position was in Uniontown, Kansas. She spent one year there before returning to the Waynesville area and began teaching Business at Wood Junior High on Fort Leonard Wood. She then became the librarian at Wood and then retired from the school district in 1984.

In her spare time, Jeannie enjoyed reading, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, bird watching, playing the piano and horseback riding. She had just recently become a big St. Louis Cardinal fan, especially Albert Pujols.

Even though Jeannie had been given several obstacles in her life to overcome, she was a very determined lady and was well respected. She will be sadly missed by all that knew her.

Jeannie passed away at 7:39 P.M. Wednesday, August 5, 2009 in her home surrounded by her loving family at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 8 days.

Jeannie will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by one sister: Glenda Ross of Devils Elbow, MO; two brothers: Loren Ross of Devils Elbow, MO and James Huey Ross of Denver, CO; one niece: Gloria Li Ross; one nephew: James Jeffrey Ross; other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and grandparents, Jeannie was preceded in death by one baby sister, Vera Faye Ross.

Private family services were held Saturday, August 8, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory. Burial followed in the Goodall Cemetery.

Public memorial services were held at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 18, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory with Rev. Christopher Hendrix officiating. Pianist Becky Lercher played several of Jeannie’s favorite songs for prelude and postlude. Soloist Bonnie Hunter sang “Some Call It Heaven” and the congregation sang “Amazing Grace”. Several friends recalled their wonderful memories of Jeannie. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory.
