Hazel Florence (Singleton) Hough 1918-2002

Hazel Florence Hough was born September 11, 1918 at Wheeler Mill near Dixon. She was one of eight children born to the union of the late Elbert "Ebb" and Emma (Wolf) Singleton. She attended the Needmore School.

On February 1, 1936, Hazel was united in marriage with Leland Hough in Waynesville. Leland preceded her in death on January 7, 1993.

Hazel and Leland worked at the Brumley's Store in downtown Waynesville before opening their own souvenir's store, grocery store and full service filling station in Buckhorn. Hazel and Leland owned and operated Hough's Market for over 42 years.

Hazel departed this life the afternoon of July 8, 2002 at the Life Care Center of Waynesville, at the age of 83 years.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two sisters: Sylvia Long of Rolla and Mae Case of Waynesville. She also leaves several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Hazel was extremely fortunate to have a wonderful caregiver: Bertha Echelberry and her husband, Larry of Buckhorn.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Hazel was also preceded in death by two sisters: Lillie George and Edith Zumwalt and three brothers: Mike, Harry and Barney Singleton.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 11 at Waynesville Memorial Chapel with Rev. Danny Graves officiating. Pianist, Becky Lercher played " Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art" and "I'll Meet You In The Morning." Mrs. Hough's great-nephew, Paul Long read the obituary. Serving as escorts were Dean Cogar, Larry Echelberry, Mark and Paul Long and Scott Williamson. Honorary escorts were Frank and Mike Case, Alva Foote, Frank, John and Kenneth Long, Virgil Singleton and Bob Zumwalt. 

Burial was in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

Sylvia Lou (Singleton) Long 1906-2004

Sylvia Lou (Singleton) Long was born August 12, 1906 at Needmore, Missouri in Pulaski County near the old Riddle Bridge. She was one of eight children born to the union of Phillip Elbert and and Emma Florence (Wolfe) Singleton.

In 1922, Sylvia left home to take a position working at the Baker Hotel. She later worked at Dorey Hough's restaurant and then at the Stage Coach Inn.

On July 27, 1927, Sylvia was united in marriage with Francis Marion Long in Rolla, Missouri. This union was blessed with two sons, Francis and Kenneth.

After their marriage, Sylvia and Frank worked at the Pippin Place before moving for a short time to California to work in the vineyard fields. They moved back to Pulaski County in the late 1930's at which time Sylvia went to work at the Waynesville Post Office. For a brief time, she was employed at Mitchell Optical Company before doing laundry in her home. In 1950, Sylvia went to work at the laundry on Fort Leonard Wood where she held the position of supervisor until her retirement in 1970. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who did beautiful handwork and made many quilts for her family to enjoy.

Sylvia departed this life the morning of November 14, 2004, at Rolla Presbyterian Manor in Rolla, Missouri, at the age of 98 years, 3 months and 2 days.

She was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her two sons: Francis M. Long and his wife, Claudette of Mandeville, Louisiana and Kenneth Long and his wife, Mary Lou of Rolla, Missouri; one sister: Mae Case of Waynesville, Missouri; four grandchildren: Marybeth, John, Mark, and Paul Long; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers: Harry, Barney and Mike and three sisters: Lillie George, Edith Zumwalt and Hazel Hough.

Funeral services were held at 11:30 A.M. Wednesday, November 17, 2004 in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel with Mark Rinehart officiating. Sylvia's grandson, John Long gave a beautiful eulogy. Pianist Becky Lercher played "In The Garde" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Serving as escorts were Cleo Long, Doug Long, Jack Long, Leo Long, Virgil Singleton and Bob Zumwalt.

Burial followed in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested in memory of Sylvia Long to the charity of the donor's choice and may be left at the funeral home.

EMERY SINGLETON 1896-1990

Emery Singleton, 94, died Monday, August 27 1990. He was born in Hancock MO on January 2, 1896, the son of Pink F. and Lucy (Hensley) Singleton.

He married Parlea Keller in 1916 and she preceded him in death on September 11, 1971. He married Bertha Rice on February 14, 1972.

Mr. Singleton is survived by his wife, Bertha, of the home; two stepsons, David Rice of Independence and Douglas and his wife Phyllis Rice of Dixon; three grandchildren, Chandra, Daniel and Jennifer Rice; one sister-in-law, Bertha Boulware of Crocker; his mother-in-law Katheryn Boulware of Dixon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie and Arthur, and one sister, Nell Bartlett.

Mr. Singleton attended the Freedom Church. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a mechanic, retiring in 1942, and spent the rest of his time on his farm near Dixon.

Funeral services were held in the Long funeral Home in Dixon on Wednesday, August 29, 1990 at 11 a.m. with Harold Withers officiating. Burial was in the Freedom Cemetery. Serving as his pallbearers were Douglas and Daid Rice, Larry Boulware, Farris Dake, Howard Howser and Richard Boulware.
