Robert Martin-John "RoBBee" Scott 1989-2009

Robert Martin-John “RoBBee” Scott, son of Robert D. and Patricia LaVonne (Fulmer) Scott, was born September 7, 1989 in Springfield, Missouri.

As a young boy, RoBBee grew up in the St. Robert area and graduated from the Waynesville R-VI School District with the Class of 2008.

While in school, RoBBee was very active with several organizations. He was a member of the Drama Club, the Thespian Society, the Men’s Choir, an officer with FFA (Future Farmers of America), played with the Band and in the Jazz Band and also a member of the Heating/Air Conditioning Passport at Vo-Tech.

RoBBee had a beautiful singing voice and loved to sing every chance he could. He was also talented with playing instruments and was especially good with the trumpet and the guitar. RoBBee loved to be outdoors while fishing, but also enjoyed tinkering with cars.

RoBBee attended church at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Robert.

RoBBee passed away Thursday, November 5, 2009 near Waynesville, Missouri at the age of 20 years, 1 month and 29 days. He will be sadly missed by all those that knew and loved him.

RoBBee is survived by his mother: Pat Scott of St. Robert, MO; one sister: Konnee G. Fifer and her husband Bill of Malabar, FL; uncle: Dr. LeRoy J. Fulmer and his wife, Marcia of Waynesville, MO; aunt: Mickey Rider of St. Robert, MO; several cousins, other relatives and friends.

RoBBee was preceded in death by his father: Robert D. Scott and two uncles: Martian J. Fulmer and Charlie A. Scott.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 10, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory with Pastor Richard Anderegg officiating. Special song selections “Simple Man” and “Come Sail Away” were played at the beginning of the service. Pianist Becky Lercher accompanied the congregation as they sang “Amazing Grace”, “Abide With Me” and “Be Still My Soul”. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory.

Herbert Fred Henry Goosen 1925-2009

Herbert Fred Henry Goosen passed away November 8, 2009 in the Christian Health Care Facility, North, Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of 84 years and 4 months.

Herb was born July 8, 1925 in Benton County, near Cole Camp, Missouri. He was the youngest son of four children born to the union of the late John and Ida (Frisch) Goosen.

Herb grew up in Benton County where he attended Dillon School and the Lutheran School. Even as a young boy, Herb worked long, hard hours on the family farm, a lifestyle and work ethic that would serve him well throughout his life.

Herb had a wide range of skills, working in several laundry and dry cleaners: Fashion Dry Cleaners in Jefferson City, Rice’s Cleaners in Waynesville. He owned and operated Iberia Laundry and Dry Cleaners in Iberia and Crocker. He also worked as a funeral director and drove an ambulance. Herb served as a police officer in Crocker and as an assistant chief of police in Richland. He also drove a school bus for Richland Schools and retired as a corrections officer for the Missouri Department of Corrections. He enjoyed horses, whether riding, showing, trading or breaking them, as well as working his mules with their wagons. In his later years, he loved four wheeling and spending time visiting with friends at the Warren Senior Center in Richland.

On April 7, 1946, Herb was united in marriage with Mary Laverne Attwood, and to this union four children were born: Joyce, Linda, Danny and David. Mary preceded Herb in death on July 15, 2008.

Herb is survived by his four children: Joyce Goosen of Sweet Springs, MO, Linda McLean and her husband Charlie of Buckner, MO, Danny Goosen and his wife Meghan of Philadelphia, PA and David Goosen of Portland, OR; five grandchildren: Nathan McLean and his wife Taryn, Aaron McLean and his wife Amy, Mary Boese and her husband Justin, Chad Clark and Deserrai Davis: four great grandchildren: Tarah, Alyssa, Hunter and Dani; many other relatives and friends.

Herb was preceded in death by his granddaughter: Kalen Clark, three sisters: Idella Williams, Selma Eidson and Stella Rambow.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 13, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Richland with Rev. Daniel Garcia officiating. The songs “Amazing Grace”, “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” and “I’ll Fly Away” were played. Serving as escorts were Nathan McLean, Aaron McLean, Chad Clark, John Kullman, Francis Hobbs, Justin Boese, Junior Holloway and Clyde Jones.

Burial followed in the Oaklawn Cemetery with Rev. Garcia reading the poem “I’m Free”. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Richland.

SFC (Ret) Reyno Feltner 1924-2009

SFC (Ret) Reyno Feltner passed away November 8, 2009 at his home at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 11 days.

Reyno was born April 28, 1924 in Hazard, Kentucky. (Reyno would always link his birth date to that of the sinking of the Titanic which sank on the very same day twelve years earlier.) He was one of nine children born to the union of Wiley and Florence (Hurt) Feltner. There were eight boys and one girl.

At the age of 18, Reyno enlisted in the United States Army and served his country faithfully for “20 years, 4 hours and 32 minutes” (according to Reyno). He retired on April 29, 1964 which happened to be a leap year and he had to do an extra day of duty because of that. For his faithful service, Reyno was awarded several awards and commendations and by the time of his discharge had earned the rank of Sergeant First Class.

After retiring from the military, Reyno worked as a civil service employee for 12 years. He drove a truck, worked in supplies and also family housing. On June 1, 1980, he resigned from civil service and began doing volunteer work.

For 17 years, Reyno volunteered at the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital pushing the book cart around to the patients. He also volunteered with the Roby Fire Department, Lions Club and Meals on Wheels, just to name a few. He was a lifetime member of the Ozark Memorial VFW Post 3176 of St. Robert, the American Legion Post 331 and the Cooties. He was also a member of the Roby Fire Department, Mark Twain React Team and the Northwest Texas County Lions Club.

Reyno made the comment that he used to like to hunt and fish but decided to give that up to do volunteer work because he got more enjoyment out of that than waiting for the fish to bite. He will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by all those that knew and loved him.

Reyno is survived by his very dear friends, the Howard Walny family of Newburg, along with his fellow VFW, American Legion and Cootie members, the Mark Twain React Team, the Roby Fire Department, the Northwest Texas County Lions Club and most especially by the hundreds of lives touched through Reyno’s years of volunteering at the General Leonard Wood Hospital.

Reyno was preceded in death by his parents; 7 brothers: Ravina, Raymond, Damon, Oakland, Franklin D., Demere and Lexington; and 1 sister: Regina Feltner.

Graveside services with military honors were held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 17, 2009 in the Ozark Memorial VFW Post 3176 Cemetery of St. Robert with Chaplain (CPT) Jim Burton officiating. Herman Corbett recalled his wonderful memories of his friend and fellow soldier and Hector Mitchell read a poem in memory of Reyno. Military honors were provided by the United States Army of Fort Leonard Wood. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory.

CPT (Ret) Gary L. Kindler 1934-2009

Gary Leigh Kindler passed away November 11, 2009 at his home near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of 75 years and 16 days.

Gary was born October 26, 1934 in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. When he was a young boy, his family moved to the Oceanside/Carlsbad, California area where he grew up. Gary graduated from Oceanside/Carlsbad Union High School, Class of 1952.

Later that year Gary joined the U.S. Marie Corp. He dedicated over 22 years to the service of his country, and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He received several awards and commendations for his faithful and honorable service. Captain Kindler retired from active duty in 1974.

After retiring from the military, Gary made his home in Oceanside, where he worked for Prudential Insurance Company from 1974 to 1988. He then moved to 29 Palms, California. Gary was active in the Elks Lodge, MCA, TROA and MMOA.

In June, 2000, Gary was united in marriage with Bonnie Ruth (McCauley) Carey. Gary and Taylor Jo, as she is affectionately known, enjoyed raising and showing miniature show horses. They made many wonderful friends traveling around and participating in the horse shows. Gary also loved his dogs, Sammy, Winky and Gunther.

Gary was dearly loved, and will be sadly missed by his wife: Taylor Jo; four children: Jeffery Kindler (Lily) of Yuma, Arizona, Anna Mapston (Keith) of Fallbrook, California, Ken Kindler (Lynne) of Sebastian, Florida and Susan Bailey (Anthony) of Richland, Missouri; one step-daughter: Trina Carey of Palm Springs, California; mother: Jackie Kindler of Barstow, California; four siblings: Matthew Kindler of Sedona, Arizona, Yvonne Jett of Victorville, California, Kathy Kindler of Barstow, California and Mary Lou Keith (Kelly) of Twenty-Nine Palms,
California; 15 grandchildren; 2 ½ great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his father: Lester Bowen; his mother: Doris Orylla (Hunsaker) Kindler; his dad: Merle D. Kindler; step mother: Evelyn Bowen and his step son: Jim Carey.

Funeral services with military honors were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 16, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Richland with LT James Scott Storie, CHC, USN and Gary’s brother, Rev. Matthew Kindler officiating Gary’s son, Ken, and wife, Taylor Jo also shared memories with the congregation. Military honors were provided by U.S. Marines from Fort Leonard Wood. Recordings of “Ave Marie”, “Amazing Grace” and “Sissy’s Song” were played. Serving as escorts were the U.S. Military. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Richland.

Jennifer Lynette (Kusgen) May 1983-2009

Born April 6, 1983 to proud parents Dennis Kusgen and Patricia Lane, Jennifer Kusgen was the eldest granddaughter of Clarence and Mertyl Kusgen, Les and Carol Harrington, and Thompson and Mary Caldwell. She was born in Columbia, Missouri, and spent the majority of her childhood in Laquey, Missouri with her brother Billy “Boogie” Rains, sister Ricki Rains, and cousins Nakia and Johnny Lewis. Her step-father Billy Rains Sr. helped to raise her.

Jennie (as she preferred to be called and was known by anyone fortunate enough to have met her) attended school in Laquey, Missouri. She played softball and volleyball and was well liked and respected by her classmates.

In June of 1999, she met her soul mate DeWayne May, whom she would spend the rest of her days with. On January 1, 2003, DeWayne and Jennie spoke their vows to each other, and began living as husband and wife. They were legally wed at Harmony Baptist Church in Buckhorn, Missouri on March 16, 2005. In doing so, Jennie gained two stepchildren, Genesis and DeWayne May, whom she loved dearly.

She spent her professional adult years as a waitress, a job that she enjoyed, very much as evidenced by her great attitude and constant smile. Her hobbies and interests included scrap booking, photography, going anywhere with her husband and step-children, as well as spending time with her brother (who lived with her most of her life after she left the home at age 16), and sister.

Jennie left us on November 11, 2009 at 1:58 pm, after complications from a serious illness. She was just 26 years old. Her smile and unforgettable personality will be missed by all who knew and came in contact with her, as the world has suffered a great loss in losing this precious soul.

She leaves to mourn her passing: her husband, DeWayne, step-daughter, Genesis, and step-son, DeWayne, all of the home; her father, Dennis Kusgen of California, MO; her mother, Patricia Lane of Waynesville, MO; her brother and sister Billy “Boogie” and Ricki Rains of Waynesville, MO; her grandmother, Mary Caldwell of Laquey, MO; her grandmother, Mertyl Kusgen of California, MO; her grandparents, Les and Carol Harrington of Vinita, OK; her father and mother-in-law, Bearl and Faye May of Waynesville, MO; her sister-in-law Melissa May of Waynesville; brother and sister-in-law Damon and Amber May of Morrison, CO; brother-in-law Matt May of Prescott Valley, AZ; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, a soon-to-be-arriving niece or nephew, and many friends.

Receiving her into Heaven will be Tasha Kusgen, Jennie’s sister, Thompson Caldwell, Jennies’ grandfather and most special man in her upbringing, and Clarence Kusgen, grandfather from her father’s family.

Jennie May will be greatly missed, but never forgotten…

Several friends recalled their wonderful memories of Jennie and her husband DeWayne gave a beautiful eulogy celebrating the life of his wife. Mavis Rose (Hammock) Sizemore 1923-2009

Mavis R. Sizemore was born on April 15, 1923 to Clifford and Ruth (Gladden) Hammock in Laquey, MO. She was the second oldest of five children. Her brothers were William Jack Hammock, Samuel Hammock, Ted Hammock, and her sister was Maxine Turner.

Mom attended school in Richland, but transferred to Waynesville where she graduated in 1941. She had a variety of jobs during these early years. She took care of a young boy that was sick, and she worked in a dress store in Waynesville. Mom always had a flare for clothing. She learned to sew from her grandmother who was considered an outstanding seamstress. Mom, throughout her life, was able to tailor men’s suits, create her own patterns; I was the fortunate recipient of her sewing talent. Mom met my dad while she was working in the dress store. Dad was from the mountains of Kentucky and joined the 101st Airborne paratroopers. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood. As the story goes, dad saw her through the store window and after a time, he went in and asked her for a date. They didn’t date for very long, because they were married on March 3, 1942 in Rolla, MO.

After they were married, dad was transferred to Colorado Springs, CO. My brother James was born while they were stationed in Colorado. James was born while dad was transferred to Georgia, where he received his training as a paratrooper. Eventually he entered WW ll. Tragically; my brother was killed on May 19, 1956 while we were stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, in Indiana. I was born on November 6, 1949 in Fort Knox, KY.

While in the military, we were stationed in Tokyo, Japan. This is where mom took oil painting classes and learned to do portraits and landscapes. She became quit an accomplished artist. Mom enjoyed beautiful things. whether it was fabric, pictures, unusual jewelry, she had a flare for creation. We also lived in Caracas, Venezuela. Upon our return to the United States, the family lived in Falls Church, VA. where dad worked at the Pentagon. When dad finally retired we moved to Springfield, MO. where mom was able to work at Heers department store. Eventually, she struck out on her own and established a high-end retail store called the Surrey Place on the Plaza. She was an enormous success at style and business.

Dad was a bookman for an educational book company and we moved to Corpus Christi, TX. After Cecilia devastated the coast mom and dad moved to San Antonio. Eventually, they moved back home to Laquey, MO. where they built a home on the old home place. Dad gardened, and mom dedicated her life to her three grandchildren. Her grand babies gave her such joy, and as she said many times, they kept her young at heart.

Mom had a favorite saying from Eleanor Roosevelt, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift; that’s why they call it the present.”

Graveside services were held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, November 16, 2009, at Oaklawn Cemetery of Richland with Father John Groner officiating. Escorts were provided by family and friends. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Richland.

Blanche Viola (Salsman) Steward 1912-2009

Blanche Viola (Salsman) Steward, the eldest daughter of Andrew Jackson Salsman and Myrtle Lee (Wilson) Salsman was born January 21, 1912 in Richland, Missouri.

Blanche was a life-long resident of the Richland area. She attended rural schools near Richland and worked as early as age twelve to help the family makes ends meet. She cleaned houses, provided babysitting services for many families and worked for the Warren family for several years.

Blanche was united in marriage to William E. Steward. William and Blanche married on stage during a traveling carnival passing through Lebanon, Missouri. They received $50.00 for this act of bravery, quite a sum of money back then, which was quickly put to good use towards several months of rent. Born to this union were five children: Billy, Norma, Jack, Patsy and Ronda.

Blanche raised her family during a very difficult era. Economic times were difficult during the depression years. Throughout it all, Blanche made a loving home for her family and cherished the time spent with each and every one of them.

Mrs. Steward departed this life at 1:52 A.M. Sunday November 15, 2009 at the Richland Care Center, Richland, Missouri. Blanche had attained the age of 97 years.

Mrs. Steward is survived by three children: Jack Stewart of Richland, Patsy Ruth Maddox of Kingdom City and Ronda Lou Bacon of Springfield; three sisters: Eula Wilson and Louise Wilson both of Eureka, California and Mary Lee Finnegan of Enid, Oklahoma; 16 grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, William (1978); daughter, Norma Brizendine (1993); son, Billy (1938) and brother, Snowden Salsman.

A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at Hazelgreen Cemetery of Hazelgreen with Rev. Christopher Hendrix, Sr. officiating. Serving as escorts were Elmo Green, Matt Farris, Robert Noll, Michael Eggen, Jarred Maddox and William Maddox. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Richland.

Jason Saipan Teo 1982-2009

Jason Saipan Te’o was born in Berlin, Germany US ARMY Hospital, where his family was stationed in the Berlin Brigade US Army Europe, on August 17, 1982. He left Germany when he was three years old and started pre-school at Pence on Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri when he was 5.

Jason was a graduate of Dixon High School, where he was awarded a football scholarship from Missouri Valley College. He decided to discontinue college and seek employment, when his knee injury was not allowing him to continue football.

He worked in several jobs, but his passion was in music. He worked as a DJ and a manager for a night club and another job during the day. He enjoyed video games online, hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, music, parties, surfing, and motorcycles.

Jason passed away at 1:18 AM Sunday, November 15, 2009 in the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, Missouri at the age of 27 years.

Jason is survived by his parents: Saipan and Dareen Te’o of Waynesville, MO; maternal grandmother: Betty Rush of Waynesville, MO; one daughter: Savannah Rose Taylor of Jefferson City, MO; one brother; Manu Te’o and one sister: Andrea Te’o, both of Waynesville, MO; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, November 21, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert with Chaplain (MAJ) John Sutton officiating. June Leoso read Psalm 23 and Cdr. MCPO (Ret) Francis Nikolao read Romans 8:31-39. Jasons’ brother Manu Te’o read the obituary and his father, Saipan Te’o recalled his wonderful memories of his son. Several family member and friends recalled their wonderful memories of Jason. Pianist Becky Lercher accompanied the congregation as they sang “Amazing Grace”. Jason’s family sang a traditional Samoan Hymn, “Lo Otanu’u”. Serving as escorts were Manu Te’o, Erik Thorsen, Phaniel Richard, Niko Falaniko, Mac Gaono, Dewayne Clark, and Tommy Rush.

Burial followed in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Eugene Floyd officiating. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.

August 17th, 1982 - November 15th, 2009

James E. Martin 1949-2009

James Edward Martin, son of the late Noel M. and Evelyn (Barlow) Martin, was born December 7, 1949 in Waynesville, Missouri where his dad was a former Waynesville Police Department Chief. James graduated from Waynesville High School in 1968. As a young boy, James became a member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville.

After graduation, James attended University of Technology in Tulsa, Oklahoma and earned his Associate’s Degree in Computer Programming. He became employed by Brodrick & Bascon Steel Rope Co. as a computer programmer in St. Louis then as an instructor of computer programming for two years. He worked for Keen Operation Company at Labodie Power Plant in heavy equipment for five years. Then began working as a data processor for an accounting firm and went to Texas Central College and earned his accounting degree. He was employed by Paul Mustion Accounting Firm for eight years.

He was also a business owner for several years. He owned RJS Construction Company and PCC Construction Company with two friends. He became employed by EG&G Defense Facility where he worked for nine years before having to retire in January of 2009 due to medical reasons.

On June 15, 2002, James was united in marriage to Delbra Kay Perkins in Waynesville, Missouri. They shared over seven years together and many wonderful memories.

In his spare time, James enjoyed being outdoors fishing, hunting or shooting. He liked to travel and watched sports. Some would say that he was indeed a sports fanatic. James helped form the Old Stage Coach Foundation, was a member of the Community Betterment Association for 14 years and helped annually with Old Settler’s Day in Waynesville.

The one thing that James enjoyed doing more than anything, was spending time with his family. He was a fiercely protective father and doting husband and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

James passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2009 in his home at the age of 59 years, 11 months and 11 days.

James will be sadly missed by fondly remembered by his wife, Delbra Kay Martin of the home; one daughter: Michelle Varcho (Nick) of Jefferson City, MO; one son: Nathan Martin of Crocker, MO; two step-sons: Anthony Perkins (Dawn) of Dixon, IL and Barry Perkins (Danna) of Rolla, MO; one brother: Harold Martin of Waynesville, MO; half-sister: Judy Brown (Benny) of Crocker, MO; brother-in-law: Bob Stankiewicz; 5 ½ grandchildren: Eric Shane Varcho, Jazmine, Trevor, Drake and Aleya Perkins with one on the way, James Michael Varcho; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by two sisters: Brenda Abney and Pat Stankiewicz.

Memorial services were held at 1:00 P.M. Sunday, November 22, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert with Rev. Christopher Hendrix officiating. Family friend, Janet Sands read the obituary and other family friends, Gordon Rigsby and Paul Herbig recalled their wonderful memories of James. The songs “I Can Only Imagine”, “Tears in Heaven” and “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” were played. Serving as honorary escorts were Dave Dodds, Gordon Rigsby, John Herbig, Gary Mayor, Don Hutchison, Bill Spring, Karl Duncan and Charlie Sands. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert.

Betty Ann (Baker) Southwick 1935-2009

Betty Southwick passed away at 9:10 p.m., Thursday, November 19 at Bethesda South Gate Center in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 24 days.

Betty was born May 26, 1935 to the union of Floyd and Ila Mae (Vick) Baker in Jasper, Alabama where she grew up. She graduated from Walker County High School in Jasper and then attended Walker College, also in Jasper.

Betty began working in Birmingham and while there met the love of her life, Walter Fuller Southwick who was a soldier with the United States Army. They were married on May 5, 1955 in Jasper. They shared over 46 years of marriage together and were blessed with five children: Mona Louise, William “James”, Regina Marie, Sarah Anne and Lewis Duncan.

Due to Walter being a military man, Betty and the family moved wherever he was stationed and ended up in Fort Leonard Wood the first time in 1959. After being moved to several different locations, the family finally settled in St. Robert in 1967 when Walter retired from the military and they raised their children in the St. Robert area.

Besides raising her family, Betty enjoyed sewing, quilting and doing other crafts. She was very talented with these things and made beautiful items for her family and friends.

At an early age, Betty accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was a member of the Maranatha Baptist Church in St. Robert where she attended faithfully until her health began failing. She also volunteered at ACS, the Senior Center and the Life Care Center.

Betty will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by her five children: Mona Ison of Riverdale, Utah, William James Southwick (Sharon) of St. Louis, Regina Nellum, Sarah Campo (Paul) of the state of Florida and Lewis Southwick of Houston, Texas; two brothers: Frank Baker (Sharon) of Jasper, Alabama and John Baker (Sue) of St. Robert; 12 grandchildren: Kalem, Jeremy, Kendra, Isaac, Lance, Sharna, LeEssense, Karis, Brittany, Morgan, Jimmy and Johanna; 9 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband on January 12, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 25, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert with Rev. Keith Carnahan officiating. Betty’s son, James read the obituary and the songs “Amazing Grace” and “In the Garden” were played. Serving as escorts were Jimmy Childers, Isaac Southwick, Lance Southwick, Lewis Southwick, Scott Taylor and Jeremy Ison. Serving as honorary escorts were John Baker, Brandon Ison, Kalem Ison, Austin Ison, Preston Ison, Jeremiah Ison, Russell Seeley and Rusty Seeley.

Burial followed in the Hooker Cemetery of Devils Elbow, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.

To Hwa Schroeder 1934-2009

To Hwa Schroeder passed away November 22, 2009, at St. John’s Mercy Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 75.

To Hwa was born May 24, 1934 in Pusan, Korea, one of four children born to the union of the late Yum Sung Su and Sun Oak (Lee).

To Hwa’s early years were spent in Pusan, but the family soon moved to Seoul where she lived until she met an American soldier named Gerald James “Jerry” Schroeder. Jerry and To Hwa were married on August 5, 1972. They shared nearly 28 years together before Jerry preceded her in death on May 26, 2000.

Jerry retired from the U.S. Army at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he and To Hwa made their home until his death. To Hwa worked as a cook at the mess halls on post for 21 years before retiring in 1994. She was a faithful, active member of the Korean Baptist Church in Waynesville. In her leisure time, she enjoyed dancing and working in her vegetable and flower gardens.

To Hwa was dearly loved, and will be sadly missed by her nieces: Pumi Bray (Stephen) of Hartford, Connecticut and SiYoung Yoon of St. Louis; nephew: JinYoung Yu of Germany; a brother: Young Jun Yum of Kyung Kito, Korea; sister: Chun Hwa Yu of East Hartford, Connecticut; great nephews: Chad & Eric and great niece: Christy.

In addition to her parents and husband, To Hwa was preceded in death by one brother: HanJune Yum.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 25, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert with Rev. Jai Duk Rhee officiating. Pianist Kyung Rhee accompanied the congregation as they sang “Amazing Grace”. Serving as escorts were family and friends.

Burial followed in the Sunset Memorial Estates Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.

Charles Coonfield, 79 of Waynesville, a retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, passed away Monday, November 23, 2009 at Life Care Center, Waynesville.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 28, at Benton County Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rogers, Arkansas, under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.

Visitation is at 1:00 p.m. with military honors at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 27, at Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.

Mr. Coonfield is survived by four children: Charles H. Allen Leroy ( Lee) Link 1925-2009

Allen LeRoy Link, was born November 4, 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri to the union of Ivan and Belva (Lamar) Link. Allen grew up and attended school in Fredericktown, Missouri.

At the age of 20, Allen entered into the United States Army and served his country faithfully until his honorable discharge on June 12, 1946. He was a veteran of World War II and served under General George S. Patton, Jr. at the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Ribbon and the EAMET Ribbon.

Allen was a very hard worker and was talented in many different areas. During most of his working years, he worked as a self-employed man. He worked as a security guard, machinist and painted houses. He also owned his own restaurant in St. Louis for several years.

In his spare time, Allen enjoyed being outdoors either hunting or fishing. He was a member of the Francis J. Lynch VFW Post 3168 Buckhorn/Laquey, the American Legion, Eastern Star, Plato Masonic Lodge 469 AF & AM and the Waynesville/Ft. Wood Shrine Club. He enjoyed being a Shriner and would help with all their different activities and also volunteered to help with the Children’s Hospital.

Allen passed away the morning of Tuesday, November 24, 2009 in the Harry S Truman VA Hospital of Columbia, Missouri at the age of 84 years and 20 days.

Allen is survived by one son: Jim Link; one grandson: Matt Link; several great-grandchildren; family friend: Robert Steele; several other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Margarite.

Funeral services with military honors were held at 6:00 P.M. Friday, November 27, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert. Masonic services were provided by Plato Masonic Lodge #469 and VFW Services were provided by the Francis J. Lynch VFW Post 3168. Military honors were provided by the Missouri Honors Team of Rolla, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.

MSG (Ret) Tom Nowlin 1944-2009

Thomas Wesley “Tom” Nowlin passed away November 25, 2009 at his home in Waynesville, Missouri, at the age of 65 years, 1 month and 13 days.

Tom was born October 12, 1944 in Houston, Texas. He was one of three children born to the union of Claudia Joy (Morgan) and Thomas Robertson Nowlin. Tom was baptized and confirmed in the All Saints Catholic Church, Houston.

In 1963, Tom entered the U.S. Army, serving his country in the Vietnam War. During his military career, Tom was awarded several medals, commendations and other awards, some of which include the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal (7th award), National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Army Service Ribbon, Non Commissioned Officer Personal Development Ribbon (2), Expert Qualification Badge M16, Vietnam Citation of Gallantry w/palm, DVR Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal, DS ID Badge and the Meritorious Service Medal. Master Sergeant Nowlin retired from active duty service in 1984.

During the war, Tom spent time in Thailand, where he met and fell in love with Paum U. Youngyuen. They were married on October 12, 1967. Upon returning to the United States, Tom and Paum were again united in a civil ceremony on March 8, 1968 in Houston, Texas. Tom and Paum were blessed with two sons, Robbert Ivey and Roger Andrew.

Tom retired from the military at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he made his home until his passing. He and Paum owned and operated Paum’s Bridal and Formal Shop in St. Robert, which Paum still runs. Tom was very gifted at upholstery work, and working on antique cars. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. He and Paum loved ballroom and square dancing, as well as going to the casinos and playing slot machines. Tom will be remembered for being quite a jokester, and having a wonderful sense of humor.

Tom will be sadly missed by his wife: Paum Nowlin of the home; his mother: Claudia Joy Votes of San Antonio, TX; two sons: SSG (Ret) Robbert Ivey Nowlin of Columbia, SC and SGT Roger Andrew Nowlin of Broomfield, CO; one sister: Mary Jo Johnson of San Antonio, TX; one brother: Kenny Dumas of Houston, TX; three grandchildren: Brittany, Katelynn and Jayden; several other relatives and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his father.

Time of visitation was held from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. Sunday, November 29, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory with a time of remembrance held during the visitation with Chaplain Lindy Hardwick officiating. Several friends and family recalled their wonderful memories of Tom. Arrangements were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory.

Sandra Marie (Wommack) Stone, 65 of Dove , formerly of Richland, passed away 1:31 p.m., Friday, November 27, 2009 at St. John's Breech Hospital, Lebanon.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, December 3, at Oaklawn Cemetery, under direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Richland.

Visitation is from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.

Ms. Stone is survived by her mother: Edna Wommack of Richland; two siblings: Cynthia Tyree Wommack of Madison, Connecticut and Jackson Brock Wommack of Richland; a niece: Elizabeth Tyree Cook; a nephew: James Sidney Cook; aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

CSM (Ret) Hans Walter Schafer, Sr. 1942-2009

Hans Walter Schafer, Sr., son of the late Franz Josef Schafer and Margareta Schafer Nelis Wolf, was born on December 15th, 1942 in Niederlahnstein, Germany. He spent his childhood growing up in Lahnstein, Germany until he reached 19 years old. Turning 20, and ready to begin a career, he moved to the states and joined the United States Army. In Europe, his friends and family referred to him as Hans, however as he made a home for himself in the U.S. friends and family called him Walt.

On October 17th, 1970, Walt and Bonnie M. (Tanner) Beacham committed their vows to each other in front of a very small group of close friends and family at the First Baptist Church in Waynesville, MO. The couple shared 39 wonderful years of marriage together. Most friends and family refer to their relationship as more of a soul-mate partnership rather than just a marriage. The couple was blessed with 2 children; Rebecca (Becci) and Hans Jr. (Wally). Walt also had a son in a previous marriage, Michael Miller.

Proudly serving 27 years in the United States Army, and a veteran of the Vietnam War, he spent the majority of his career in Field Artillery. He was a well-respected soldier and although asked to apply for the highest ranked position available in the United States Army, Walt was ready to retire in 1989 as Command Sergeant Major. He earned several accolades and awards during his tenure as a soldier, including both the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm (unit) as well as the prestigious Honorable Order of Saint Barbara.

Walt had an undeniable talent as a Wood smith and truly enjoyed projects around the house. He had a love for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Most of all, he cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren. From supporting them at sporting events to sitting the grandkids on his lap while he took the riding lawn mower for a lap around the yard, as long as he had them close, he was happy. His sense of humor was dry, and many friends and family have wonderful memories of practical jokes he had shared with them throughout the years. In addition, frequent road trips provided a plethora of memories and vivid stories that are built to last.

Walt went home to be with the Lord on the morning of December 1st, 2009. He passed peacefully in his home, at 66 years old.

Walt will be sadly missed, and fondly remembered by his wife Bonnie. He had 3 children: Rebecca Harrison and her husband Paul Harrison, and their 2 children Michael and Hali Harrison, all residing in Springfield, MO; Hans Walter Schafer, Jr. and his wife Suzie Schafer, and their children Kyle and Sierra, all residing in Virginia Beach, VA; Michael Miller and his wife Ada Miller, and their children Adalis and Grace, all residing in Buffalo, NY.

Funeral services with military honors were held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 4, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert with Chaplain (CPT) Jeffrey Wirick officiating. Walt’s son, Hans, Jr., recalled his wonderful memories of his father and gave a toast to his father’s memory. The songs “Island of Love”, “Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite” and “Elvira” were played. Military honors were provided by the United States Army of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory.

Nona Rae (Bodwell) Larson 1924-2009

Nona Rae (Bodwell) Larson passed away December 3, 2009, at Sunset Village of the Ozarks, St. Robert, Missouri, at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 26 days.

Nona was one of two children born to the union of the late Earl Alvin and Katharyn Rae (Waterman) Bodwell. She was born June 7, 1924 in Boncarbo, Colorado. Her brother, Neil, preceded her in death.

When Nona was very young, her father took a job in Trinidad, Colorado working for the school system, so the family moved right across from the high school where she would graduate in 1942. Nona was baptized and confirmed in the Trinidad United Methodist Church.

After graduation, Nona went to work for a trucking company in Trinidad. In the late 1940’s, she was transferred to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she met Frederick Larson. Nona and Fred were married January 18, 1951 in Santa Fe. Together with Nona’s daughter, Katharyn, and Fred’s children, Rose Marie and Ronald, the family would grow to include the twins, Daniel and David and son, Larry. Fred preceded Nona in death in 1996, and Larry in 1994.

The Larson family moved to Missouri in the mid 1950’s. Nona worked at Uregas in Waynesville before taking a civil service position at Ft. Leonard Wood as a finance and accounting office clerk where she would retire after 20 years. She was a member of the Hazelgreen United Methodist Church.

Along with being generous to a fault, Nona was very talented with handwork. She loved to crochet, and it gave her great pleasure to give away her beautiful afghans and other treasures. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and bargain hunting. She was a notorious “Black Friday” shopper.

Nona will be sadly missed by her five children: Katharyn Chenoweth of Waynesville, Daniel Larson of Port Arthur, Texas, David Larson of Dallas, Texas, Rose Marie Labeau of St. Louis and Ronald Larson of the state of New Jersey; many grand, great grand and great-great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, December 6, 2009 in the Hazelgreen Methodist Church of Hazelgreen, Missouri with Ann Decker officiating. Several family members and friends recalled their wonderful memories of Nona. Pianist Joy Lynn Smith accompanied Soloist Zella Wieners as she sang “In the Garden”, “Something About That Name”, “What A Day That Will Be” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. Serving as escorts were Rex Larson, Jason Larson, Kurtis Chenoweth, Jimmy Smith, Josh Dennis, Rob Labeau, Tim Labeau, Michael Larson and Bo Sumner.

Burial followed in the Hazelgreen Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory.

Craven Rogers, 78 of Waynesville, a retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class, Korean and Vietnam Wars veteran, and retired civil service employee, passed away at 3:27 p.m., Sunday, December 6, 2009 at his home.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 11 at Sunset Memorial Estates Cemetery, under direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.

Visitation is from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

John Parker, 44 of Dixon, passed away at 10:58 p.m., Friday, December 11, 2009 at St. John’s Regional Hospital, Springfield.
