Velma Alice Stokes, 71, Crocker, died Monday at St. Johns Hospital,
Springfield. She was born Sept. 5, 1921, in Iberia, a daughter of
William and Ethel Barr Whittle. She was married Sept 17, 1944, in
Crocker to Larry Stokes, who survives at the home. She taught school
for 37 years and retired from the Waynesville school system after 25
years.
Other survivors include: three sons, Jerry Stokes,
Springfield, Donald Stokes and Thomas Stokes, both of Crocker; two
daughters, Jeannie Stokes, Seattle, Wash., and Nadine Breunig,
Reeseville, Wis.; one sister, Corrine Nair, Grand Junction Colo.; two
brothers, Junior Whittle, Crocker, and James Whittle, Eli, Nev.; and 11
grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Crocker
Christian Church. Pastor Merwyn McMillan will officiate. Burial will
be in Crocker Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the
Long Funeral Home, Crocker.
