Arthur Monroe Atterberry 1913-1986

Arthur Monroe Atterberry of Waynesville passed away February 11, 1986.  He was born August 3, 1913 in Bloodland, Missouri, and had attained the age of 72 years, 6 months, 8 days.

Since November 1982, he had lived in the Tri-County Nursing Home in Richland, Missouri.

He was the son of William Jackson Atterberry and Mary Eugene (Gan) Atterberry.  On January 19, 1953 he was united in marriage to Nellie Perrine, who preceded him in death March 1981.  He is survived by six brothers: Wes of Eldorado Springs, Missouri; Floyd and Junior of Richland; Dale of Waynesville; Leonard of Buckhorn; and Jesse of Greenfield, Illinois; five sisters: Nancy Burton, Sapulpa, Oklahoma; Goldie Locke, Wayne City, Illinois; Grace Roam and Rosalee Mortensen of Richland; and Betty Hopkins, Buckhorn; and a host of nieces and nephews.

As a boy, Arthur attended Old Friendship Baptist Church.  He loved to hunt and fish.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Earl and Frances; four sisters: Elizabeth, Ollie Belle, Imogene, and Ina Delaney.

Funeral services were held Thursday, February 13, 1986 at 2:00 p.m. in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jack Southard officiating.  Music was provided by organist, Dorothy Moore, and soloist, Iva Mae Case.  Interment was in the Buckhorn Baptist Church, Waynesville, Missouri under the direction of the Waynesville Memorial Chapel.  Escorts were the Nephews.

Effie Arrena (Gan) Tucker 1910-2006

Effie Arrena Tucker, daughter of the late James and Arrena Louisa (Crossland) Gan, was born May 25, 1910 in Bloodland, Missouri where she grew up and attended school.

As a young girl, Effie accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized. Throughout her life she had a strong faith in God.

Effie was married to William C. York and on October 2, 1940, Effie was united in marriage to Bryan Tucker in Lebanon, Missouri. Effie was blessed with eight children: Juanita, Roy, Melzona, Deloris, Vada, Wanda, Lana and Judith.

Effie was a hard worker. She worked for a short time on Fort Leonard Wood in the laundry facility, but mostly she took care of her family as a housewife and mother.

In her spare time, Effie loved to sew and was very talented in sewing her own dresses and making quilts. She enjoyed dancing, singing and watching her soap operas.

Effie passed away at 8:00 P.M. Thursday, February 23, 2006 in the Life Care Center of Waynesville, Missouri at the age 95 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Effie will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by one son: Roy C. York and his wife Lee of Columbia, KY; six daughters: Melzona Wilson and her husband Junior, Deloris Logan, Vada Williams, and Judith Ogle all of Waynesville, MO, Wanda Adkins and her husband Bert of Camdenton, MO, and Lana Burgener and her husband Jerry of Olney, IL; 26 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, Effie was preceded in death by six sisters, one brother, husband Bryan and one daughter, Juanita Irvin.

A special thanks to our sister Deloris Logan for her unselfish devotion in taking care of our Mother during the last years of her life. We humbly thank you. Our Mom will be greatly missed by us all.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 27, 2006 in the Memorial Chapel of Waynesville with Rev. Gary Humphrey and Rev. Danny Graves officiating. The songs "Mama's Teaching Angels", "Amazing Grace" and "Serenaded By Angels" were played. Serving as escorts were Wayne Adkins, Jerry Burgener, Jr., Leonard Irvin, Derek Ogle, Timothy Ogle, Davis Wilson, Allan Woodby and Calving York. Serving as honorary escorts were Raymond Adkins, Roy Lee Adkins, Mike Wilson, Larry Woodby, Richard Woodby and Terry York.

Burial followed in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapel of Waynesville/St. Robert.

Nola Lavene (Weir) Gan 1921-2004

Nola Lavene Weir Gan, daughter of James S. Weir and Annie Smiley Weir, was born on December 7, 1921 at Holly, Colorado and departed this life on March 5, 2004 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Missouri after attaining the age of 82 years, 2 months and 27 days.

During her youth, Nola accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and stayed true to her faith. She was a long time member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Waynesville, Missouri and always very supportive of the ministries of other local churches, especially those of her children and grandchildren. After reaching the point in life where she was unable to physically attend church services she really enjoyed the visits from her pastor.

Nola was united in marriage to James Edmun Gan on October 11, 1935 and they shared nearly 56 years of marriage and eight children together.

Nola leaves to mourn her passing seven children, Lenard and Kay Gan of Plato, MO; Joan (JoAnn) Lewis of St. Robert, MO; Effie and Odell Bales of Laquey, MO; Pauline and Roger LaMountain of Waynesville, MO; Marlin (Marilyn) Stevens of Waynesville, MO; Richard Gan of Crocker, MO; Sandra and Roland Fagan of Buckhorn, MO. Eleven grandchildren including Eddie Bales, Jimmy Gan, Reda and Todd Tomason, Robin and Paul Smith, Randy LaMountain, Toni and David Stevens, Sarah Fagan, Jerimiah and Stacy Gan, Jamiann and James Turner, Joshua Gan, and Jacob Gan. Eight great-grandchildren: Aaron Tomason, Myra Tomason, Philip Smith, Jenna Smith, Lela LaMountain, Ethan Gan, Madison Gan, and Ashley Stevens; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. And also left to mourn her passing is her two special pets, her small dog Queenie and her cat Bobbie.

Preceding Nola in death are her parents, husband Edmun, first born infant son Henry Howard Gan, grandson Jerald Gan, three brothers, Ula, Ima, and Hershel Weir, and three sisters, Hurley Tomlinson, Mary Elmore, and Vernie Eldridge, and son-in-law Lloyd Lewis.

Nola, a very loving and nurturing person enjoyed her church, gospel singing, sewing, quilt making, blue grass music, cooking large meals for her family and many friends, and baby sitting especially with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her younger years she enjoyed working with animals especially her goats, chickens, and ducks. She was always concerned about the welfare and health of others and prayed for them.

A special thanks to our sister Marlin (Marilyn) Stevens for her unselfish devotion in taking care of our mother during the last years of her life. We humbly thank you.

Our mom will be greatly missed by us all.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at the First Freewill Baptist Church of Waynesville with Rev. Elmer Turnbough officiating. Nola's grandson Paul Smith read the obituary. Pianist Norma Smith accompanied the congregation as they sang "Are You Ready" and for soloist Sharon Greer as she sang "Amazing Grace". Soloist Don Pratt sang "Will the Circle Be Unbroken". Serving as escorts were Eddie Bales, Jacob Gan, Jerimiah Gan, Jimmy Gan, Joshua Gan, Paul Smith, David Stevens, Todd Tomason and James Turner.

Burial followed in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

Sarah Elizabeth (Gan) Stewart 1928-2007

Sarah Elizabeth Stewart, born September 4, 1928, was one of four children born to the union of the late James Franklin and Amanda (York) Gan, near Bloodland, Missouri.

Elizabeth departed this life the morning of July 21, 2007 in the Phelps County Regional Medical Center of Rolla, Missouri at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 17 days from congestive heart failure and several surgeries and infections.

Elizabeth's mother, Amanda, passed away January 16, 1936 with cancer. She is buried in the Old Friendship Cemetery of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and so is her father "Little Frank", as he was fondly called. Frank died in a car accident on November 17, 1965.

Elizabeth's father married Edith Campbell, after the death of Amanda, and brought the family back together. They lived near Bloodland, Missouri until the family was forced to move to make way for Fort Leonard Wood, to train soldiers for World War II. They moved to the Northwest part of Pulaski County to the community of Turkey Ridge near Waynesville. Elizabeth attended Bloodland School and Turkey Ridge School.

Elizabeth was united in marriage to Robert M. "Bob" Stewart, a World War II veteran, on January 12, 1947 and they had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They shared four children: Sandra, William Robert (Billy Bob), Marlena and Richard.

Elizabeth and Bob lived in Rolla, when Bob was attending the Missouri School of Mines. They lived in East Peoria, Illinois while Bob worked for Caterpillar and in the fall of 1950, they moved back to Waynesville when Bob was employed at Fort Leonard Wood. Bob went to work in Rolla at the U.S.G.S. in January 1957. He retired in May of 1981. Elizabeth was very busy with caring and being there for their children and being a good loving wife. She was a very good seamstress and sewed many clothes.

Elizabeth and Bob loved to travel and camp, which they combined when they started their craft shows all over Missouri and many other states. Their last shows featured beautiful, "Plenty Pockets Purses", made from "pre-loved" jeans which Bob cut and Elizabeth sewed. They called their business "Stewart's Denim-ite Designs."

Elizabeth and Bob are currently attending Community Christian Church of Rolla, Missouri and have attended Ridgeview Christian Church of Rolla, MO and First Christian Church of Waynesville, MO.

Elizabeth and Bob loved their children and grandchildren and made many trips to visit them.

Elizabeth will be greatly missed by her loving husband, Bob and the children: Sandra Gass and her husband John of Burlington, IA, W.R. (Billy Bob) Stewart and his wife, Tracy of O'Fallon, IL and Marlena Jones and her husband Terry of Rolla, MO; step-son: Richard Stewart of Morton, IL; step-sister: Frieda York of Waynesville, MO; 13 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; 2 step-brothers: John and Jim Campbell; step-sister: Imogene Reeves; 2 sisters and their husbands: Lettie Baranowski and Joe, Mary Bell Booker and Bud; one brother: Lee Otis Gan and wife Edna (Jefferies); daughter-in-law: Gloria Stewart; and infant grandson: Jeremy Jones.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 24, 2007 in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel with Pastor Dale Wands officiating. Sarah Wands read a beautiful poem in honor of Elizabeth. The song "Forever and Ever Amen" was played and Soloist Becky Lercher sang "The Old Rugged Cross". Serving as escorts were Leonard Atterberry, Larry Baranowski, Francis Barnes, Jerry Avery, James Baranowski and James Booker. Serving as honorary escorts were Dwight and J.R. Baranowski.

Burial followed in the Idumea Cemetery of Laquey, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

Mary Ann (Ward) Whitham Gan 1931-2007

Mary Ann Ward Whitham Gan, 76, of Richland, Mo., died Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield, Mo.

She was born May 7, 1931, in Madison, the daughter of Alfred and Anna Walker Ward.

She is survived by her husband, Chester Gan; one son, Gilbert Whitham of Richland, Mo.; four sisters, Alma Duncan, Doris Jones, Ella Sublett and Evelyn Lanham, all of Madison; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and two sisters.

The funeral was Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Richland Memorial Chapel in Richland, Mo. Burial was in Buckhorn Cemetery.

John A. Baranowski 1934-1985

John A. Baranowski, son of Lawrence and Lettie Gan Baranowski, was born April 6, 1934 in Pulaski County, and departed this life March 11, 1985 at Anchorage, Alaska at the age of 50 years, 11 months, and 5 days.

He was united in marriage to Betty Nayakik on December 23, 1966.

John is a member of the High Point Baptist Church. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1953 until 1957. He has been employed at the Alaska Brick Company for twenty-two years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; three brothers, James of Richland; Wayne of Eldridge and Frank of Stoutland; eight sisters, Marie Henson of Richland, Norma Avery of Lebanon, Ruth Worley of Urbana, Joan Messer of Ulman, Louise Lackey of Kansas City, Kansas; Evelyn Rogers and Edith Hurley of Lebanon; and Unice Jones of Blue Springs; his maternal grandmother, Edith Gan of Waynesville; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Lawrence.

Funeral services were held from the High Point Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 1985 with Rev. Wayne Jones officiating.

Music was by the church choir.

Burial was in High Point Cemetery.

Escorts were Francis Barnes, Bob Breedlove, Carl Barker, Lloyd Smith, Sonny Hooker, and Loman Marshall.

Viva Frances Gan 1906-1984

Viva Frances Gan, of Crocker, Missouri was born on May 1, 1906 at Crocker, Missouri; the daughter of Orville and Edna (Smith) Brown and departed this life on February 14, 1984 at the Pulaski County Memorial Hospital. She had attained the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 13 days.

She is survived by her husband Claude, of the home in Crocker, Missouri; 1 sister Hazel Griffin of Warsaw, Missouri; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, February 16, 1984 at the Long Moss Williams Chapel in Crocker, Missouri at 2:00 p.m. with Floyd Barlow officiating.

Burial was in the Crocker Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Long Moss Williams Funeral Home of Crocker, Missouri.

Pallbearers were: Bennie Brown, Troy Brown, Darin Brown, Eddie Lively, Virgil Carmack and Carl Brown.

Wanda Lee Gan Flynn 1939-1984

Services for Wanda Flynn were held at First Baptist Church 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 7, 1984. Officiating at the services were Rev. Perry Cousins, Rev. Jack Clark, and Rev. Roger Marshall. Music was provided by Rusty Shadel, New Horizons and Sharon Gundram, Organist. Burial was in the Oaklawn Cemetery. Escorts were: Leroy Massey, Gilbert Whitham, Jim Bill Goforth, Ben Hogland, Sonny Hooker, and Elmer Dean Hutton. Under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapels of Richland, Missouri.

Wanda Lee Gan Flynn was born to Willard and Nancy Jane Exedine Gan on June 24, 1939 in Pulaski County, Missouri, and passed away at St. John’s Regional Health Center, Springfield, Missouri, after a long illness. At the time of her passing, Wanda had attained the age of 44 years, 6 months, and 12 days.

Wanda lived her entire life in Pulaski County, and became a Christian at First Baptist Church in Richland, Missouri, where she had remained a member.

On March 9, 1957 she was united in marriage to Dick Flynn, and to this union was born 2 daughters.

She was preceded in death by her father, Willard Gan. Those surviving her are her husband, Dick, 2 daughters, Mrs. Donna Ashley of Richland, and Lisa of the home; mother Nancy Gan of Waynesville, Missouri; two brothers, Lloyd and Chester Gan, both of Richland; 3 sisters, Martha Tucker of Hazelgreen, Missouri, Mary Patton and Vera York, both of Waynesville, Missouri; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Elsie Mae (Phillips) Clark 1898-1984

Elsie Mae Clark, daughter of William Henry Phillips and Rachael Susan (Gan) Phillips, was born April 29, 1898, in Bloodland, Missouri, and she departed this life at Americana-Fremont Nursing Center on August 28, 1984 in Springfield, Missouri. At the time of her passing she had attained the age of 86 years and 4 months, and 9 days.

She united in marriage to Dewey Edward Clark by an old pioneer minister Rev. Thomas Bollinger at Hawkins, Missouri, and to this union two children were born.

She made her home at Hazelgreen, Missouri until the early 1940’s when she and her family moved to Waynesville, Missouri where she lived until her death.

She is survived by her two children, a son Ralph Clark of Aurora, Colorado, and a daughter, Myrtle Garton of Springfield, Missouri. One sister Lucy Satterfield of Laquey, Missouri and five grandchildren and four great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.


Funeral services were held Saturday, September 1, 1984 at 10:00 a.m. in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel, organist was Marjorie Link, and soloist Janell Walters.

Those serving as escorts were Norman Humphreys, Gay McDonald, Robbie Goodrich, David Link, Bob Goodrich, and Clyde Phillips.

Cora Elizabeth (Gan) Williams 1901-2004

Cora Elizabeth (Gan) Williams, one of seven children born to the late James Elsberry and Arrena Louisa (Crossland) Gan, was born May 25, 1901 at Smith Hollow, a small community which is now part of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Cora was delivered by a mid-wife and weighed only 1 ½ pounds. As a young girl, she attended a one room schoolhouse known as the Lone Star School.

On May 2, 1920, Cora was united in marriage to James Sterling Williams at Wharton, Missouri. Together they shared over 64 years of marriage and were blessed with 6 children: Dorcas Asilea, Edna Arrena, Kellis Lloyd, Ella Lucinda, Donna Lea Lorene and James Floyd.

Shortly after their marriage, Cora and James moved back to the Waynesville area to make their home raising their family and became one of the true pioneers of Pulaski County. She worked hard cutting stave bolts during the depression and later worked as a seamstress for a tailor shop on Ft. Leonard Wood for several years. She cleaned houses for many doctors and local people in the area. She worked hard all her life until she had to retire because of a broken hip.

Cora enjoyed working in her gardens and yard. She loved watching her flowers grow, especially her roses and violets. She was a member of the Home Extension Club.

As a young girl, Cora accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized. She was a devoted member of the Friendship Baptist Church for many years before moving her membership to the Deerlick Baptist Church in the late 1930’s.

Cora went home to be with her Lord at 10:20 P.M. Monday, March 15, 2004 in the Life Care Center of Waynesville at the age of 102 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Cora will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by her three daughters: Donna Shoemaker of Waynesville, Arrena Graves of Laquey and Ella Rose of Canyon City, Colorado; one sister: Effie Tucker of Buckhorn; 21 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, Cora was also preceded in death by her husband, James on November 27, 1984; three children, Dorcas Asilea Bales and Kellis Lloyd and James Floyd Williams; four grandchildren; one brother and four sisters.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 19, 2004 in the Deerlick Baptist Church with Cora’s grandson, Rev. Danny Graves officiating. Rev. Gary Humphrey opened the service with prayer and read the obituary. Rev. Elmer Turnbough read a poem selected by the family. Pianist Georgia Primus played the prelude and postlude and Soloist Becky Lercher sang “Amazing Grace” and “Precious Memories”. Serving as escorts were Eddie Graves, Rogert Graves, Randy Laribee, Felton R. Shoemaker, Luis ViJarro and James (Jimmy) Williams. Serving as honorary escorts were Cora’s granddaughters and grandsons.

Burial followed in the Deerlick Cemetery with the song “Amazing Grace” played by bagpipes. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

Polly Ann (Gan) Brown 1898-1984

Polly Ann Brown was born in Bloodland, Missouri on July 10, 1898, the daughter of James and Arrena Crossland Gan, and passed away in the Columbia Medical Center on Friday night, January 20, 1984. She had attained the age of 85 years.

She was united in marriage to Bannon S. Brown on July 17, 1919.

Mrs. Brown is survived by 1 son, Leland Brown, of Buckhorn; 4 granddaughters, Karolyn Lercher, Karen McAlester, Katheryn and Karel Brown, all of Waynesville; 5 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Edmon Gan of Waynesville; 3 sisters, Cora Williams, Lemzona Fagan, and Effie Tucker, all of Waynesville; with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bannon S. Brown; 1 son, Lemon (Happy) Douglas Brown; 1 daughter, Lois Brown; and 3 sisters, Nora York, Lucinda Adkison and Edna Mae Williams.

She was a faithful member of the Buckhorn Baptist Church and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, January 23, 1984 at the Buckhorn Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with F.S. Hammons officiating.

Burial was in the Buckhorn Cemetery under the direction of the Long Moss Williams Funeral Home of Waynesville, Missouri.

Pallbearers were: Charlie Brown, Phillip Wilkins, Allen Freeman, Donald Brown, Tommy Beals and Roy York.

Roy Don Gan 1957-2007 & Johnathan Ray Gan 1981-2007

Funeral services for Roy Don Gan, 49 and Johnathan Ray Gan, 25 father and son, both of Minco were held on Saturday, February 24, 2007, 2 pm at the First Baptist Church in Minco with Rev. David Mercer of Minco United Methodist Church officiating.

Roy was born March 22, 1957 at Waynesville, Missouri to Roy Glenn Gan and Shirley Ann (Bartlett) Gan. Roy and Johnathan died Monday, February 19, 2007 in a tragic car accident, other son David still in ICU Presbyterian Hospital in OKC.

Roy had lived in the Minco-Cogar communities since 1993 coming from Choctaw. Roy married La Donna (McLaughlin) on May 28, 1976 at Glencoe, Oklahoma. Both Roy and Johnathan worked in concrete construction together, along with David, son in hospital.

Johnathan was born on April 10, 1981 at Oklahoma City to Roy Dan and La Donna Gan.

Survivors include: Wife and mother La Donna Gan of the home in Minco; two sons and brothers: David of the home in Minco and Michael and Tonya Gan of Minco; one daughter and sister: Michelle Gan of the home in Minco; three grandchildren and nieces and nephew: Blake Michael Gan, Ashley Dawn Gan and Mercedes Castro.

Roy’s siblings: two brothers and sisters-in-law: Carl and Angela Gan of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Steven and Tammy Gan of Louisiana; six sisters and three brothers-in-law: Rose Ann and Roger Reed of Conway, Ark., Jettie Gan and Teresa Gan both of Branson, Missouri, Glenda Jean Gan of Lebanon, Missouri, Nancy and L. D. Asbil of Glencoe, OK, Elizabeth and Bobbie Roberson of Stillwell, OK.

Burial in Hazel Dell Cemetery, NW of Minco.

Mabel L. (Gan) Saling 1899-1957

Mabel Lea Gan, daughter of George W. and Anna Gan, was born in Waynesville, Missouri, April 24, 1899 and died suddenly at her home in St. Clair, Missouri on April 19, 1957.

On December 24, 1919 she was united in marriage to Samuel E. Saling. To this union one son, William James Saling was born.

She spent her early life in Waynesville where she was active in church and social affairs, later moving to Swedeborg, Missouri, where she lived for several years. She was a member of the Swedeborg Baptist Church, where she took an active part and attended regularly. She was a long time member of the Loyal Workers Club of Swedeborg, where she was loved and respected by all. When her health failed some two years ago, they moved to St. Clair to be near her son and his family.

Survivors are her husband, Samuel E. Saling, her son and daughter-in-law, five grandsons, Billy, Jr., Michael, Larry, Patrick, and Terry, two sisters, Lois Lofting of Crocker, and Georgia Sprague of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who will be grieved at her passing.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the Waynesville Baptist Church with Rev. J.L. Hicks officiating. Burial was in the Friendship Cemetery under direction of Hedges Funeral Home of Waynesville.
