WAYNESVILLE- Graveside services for Ashby L. Phillips, 89, Knox Village, Waynesville, will be ta 10 a.m. Thursday in Waynesville Memorial Cemetery with William Walton officiating. Burial with Masonic rites is under direction of Colonial of Richland.

Mr. Phillips died Monday afternoon in Pulaski County Memorial Hospital here after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Ashby, Jr., Mason City, Iowa, and Richard, of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; and two daughters, Mrs. Rosalie Wright, Clear Lake, Iowa, and Mrs. Jessie Hall, Crane, Indiana.

WAYNESVILLE- Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Parkview Baptist Church for Mrs. Rosa B.

Phillips, 82, who died at her home near here Thursday after a short illness. The Rev. Clarence

Smith will officiate, and burial will be in Dunkard Cemetery.

Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Goldie McKinnon, Mrs. Carrie Burgess, Mrs. Leva Dye and
Mrs. Nettie Smith, all of Waynesville, and Mrs. Velma Williams, Lansing, Mich.: two sons, Ben

Mose Helms, Pleasant Hill, Ill., and Elijah Helms of Dixon: 42 grandchildren,

40 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Richard Lee Phillips 1940-1983

Richard Lee Phillips, son of Robert and Margie Thornsberry Phillips was born September 8, 1940 at Crocker, MO., and died November 11, 1983 at the Lake of the Ozarks General Hospital at Osage Beach, at the age of 43 years, 2 months, and 3 days.

In December, 1964 he was united in marriage to Joan Badsteiber at Omaha, Nebraska, to this union two children were born.

Dick was the former owner of Wis-Illa-Mo Resort at Osage Beach, and for the last eight years has been a real estate broker in the lake area. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Joan of the home at Linn Creek, one son Steve and one daughter Susie, both of the home, his mother Margie Phillips of Crocker, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father and one sister.

Funeral services were held November 13, 1983 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Starmann officiating. Burial was in the Zion Cemetery at Crocker.

Pallbearers were Ron Larkin, Shirrel Duncan, John Farrell, Wayne Thomas, John Curran, and Merl Heibel. Honorary Pallbearers were Bob Gattermeir, Bill R. Raynor III, Mark Hohenshell, Bob Malcoln, Wally Trump, Jim Newman, Jim Henderson, Bob Yows, and Don Strickland.

Services were under the direction of Hedges Funeral Home of Camdenton, Missouri.

Estill P. Ravenscroft 1893-1984

Estill P. Ravenscroft, son of William Butler Ravenscroft, Sr., and Emma J. Phillips Ravenscroft, was born December 13, 1893 in Kansas City, Missouri and departed this life February 10, 1984 in the Lebanon Care Center.

On March 5, 1917 he was united in marriage with Winona M. Barnhart and to this union were born four children, all surviving.

He served with the United States Army during World War I, receiving an honorable discharge May 7, 1919.

Estill worked in construction from 1919 to 1930. He then was employed as caretaker of the Rotary Boys Club at Lee’s Summit, Missouri until 1949. He later was employed in the construction of Unity Village until 1951. He then moved to Hawkeye and in 1974 moved to Stoutland.

He was a member of the Baptist Church at Leeds, Missouri.

He is survived by his wife, Winona; two daughters: Mrs. Minnie Clay of Stoutland, Missouri and Mrs. Jean McMininy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two sons: Estill P. Ravenscroft, Jr., of Pensacola, Florida and James P. Ravenscroft of Columbus, Georgia; two sisters: Mrs. Dorothy Owns of Pleasant Hill, Missouri and Mrs. Mary Margaret Sparks of Kansas City, Missouri; nine grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and a number of great great grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 12, 1984, 2:00 p.m. at Stoutland Christian Church with Rev. Frank Loehr officiating.

Music was provided by Rusty Shadel, soloist, and DeLores Shadel, organist.

Escorts were: Waldo Bethurem, Bill Fenton, Willard Hasty, Charles Holloway, Jerry Wellington, and Mack Clark.

Burial was in Stoutland Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapel.

Elsie Mae (Phillips) Clark 1898-1984

Elsie Mae Clark, daughter of William Henry Phillips and Rachael Susan (Gan) Phillips, was born April 29, 1898, in Bloodland, Missouri, and she departed this life at Americana-Fremont Nursing Center on August 28, 1984 in Springfield, Missouri. At the time of her passing she had attained the age of 86 years and 4 months, and 9 days.

She united in marriage to Dewey Edward Clark by an old pioneer minister Rev. Thomas Bollinger at Hawkins, Missouri, and to this union two children were born.

She made her home at Hazelgreen, Missouri until the early 1940’s when she and her family moved to Waynesville, Missouri where she lived until her death.

She is survived by her two children, a son Ralph Clark of Aurora, Colorado, and a daughter, Myrtle Garton of Springfield, Missouri. One sister Lucy Satterfield of Laquey, Missouri and five grandchildren and four great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.


Funeral services were held Saturday, September 1, 1984 at 10:00 a.m. in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel, organist was Marjorie Link, and soloist Janell Walters.

Those serving as escorts were Norman Humphreys, Gay McDonald, Robbie Goodrich, David Link, Bob Goodrich, and Clyde Phillips.

Those serving as Honorary Escorts: Bill House and Russell Dail.

Litha Ann (Godfrey) Smith 1892-1984

Litha Ann Smith, daughter of Richard and Delilah Phillips Godfrey, was born on August 14, 1892 in Miller County, and departed this life July 10, 1984 in Columbia, Missouri, at the age of 91 years.

She was united in marriage with William Smith on February 28, 1909, and to this union was born three sons and one daughter who survive.

“Annie” as she was known to her family and friends, has been a member of the Christian Church in Richland since 1950.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers, Frank, Hughie, Lace, Mike, and Odie, and one sister, Elizabeth, her son-in-law, Thayden, and her daughter-in-law, Maxine.

Annie is survived by three sons., Raymond of Columbia, Vernon, of Jefferson City, and Orville of Richland; one daughter, Irene Hughes of Richland; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren, as well as other relatives and many friends.

Services for Litha Ann Smith were held at Colonial Funeral Chapel 2:00 p.m., Friday July 13, 1984. Officiating at the services was John Davenport. Music was provided by Rusty Shadel, soloist and Marcia Shadel, organist. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery. Escorts were: James Laquey, Edward Bohannon, Wayne Johnson, Jim Dippert, Cleamont Sheeley, and Edgar Wolfe. Under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapel of Richland, Missouri.

The citizens of this and surrounding communities were stunned last Thursday night to learn of the sudden and tragic death of Wilmer Phillips, in an auto accident at Bloodland. Wilmer was riding in a car driven by his brother, Leslie Phillips, when their car crashed into a truck belonging to Fred Mace, in front of the Moore and Vaughan stores at the edge of Bloodland. It was thought that some of the lumber, which was on the truck, must have struck him, causing instant death. Leslie, although much unnerved by the shock, was uninjured.

Wilmer was the son of R.W. and Bertha E. Phillips of Waynesville. He was born near here July 6, 1915, and at the time of his passing was 18 years, 5 months, and 17 days old. Two brothers preceded him to the Great Beyond, leaving his parents, one brother, Leslie, and four sisters, namely: Mrs. Florence Gray, Misses Mary Belle, Lucille and Maxine at home.

Alf Sanders 1893-1978

Alf Sanders, son of George and Margaret Phillips Sanders was born in August 31, 1893 and departed this life October 11, 1978 in Waynesville, Missouri.

He was united in marriage to Aleene Forbes in August of 1913. To this union was born in four children. He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, one infant daughter and one daughter, Ruby, one son Donald, and four sisters, Alie, Dora, Georgia and Ida, two brothers, Robert and Cecil.

Alf has lived and farmed in the Pulaski County area all of his life. He worked for the Algoa Reformatory.

He leaves to mourn his passing, one son, Chares, of Richland; two brothers, Tom Sanders of Newburg, Missouri; Fred Sanders of Herculeaneum, Missouri; three sisters, Lena Long of Richland; Evelyn Williams and Gladys Carter, both of Waynesville; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Alf Sanders were held Saturday, October 14, 1978, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Pryor Ray Prewitt officiating. Interment was in the Oaklawn Cemetery.

Alice M. Ousley 1871-1897

This entry is from the J.J. Watts collection. John J. Watts hailed from Warren, Maine and moved to the northern Ozarks of Missouri sometime after the Civil War. He was a circuit-riding Baptist Minister and his territory covered Phelps, Pulaski, and Texas Counties and parts of Maries and Dent Counties. He established a cemetery, Watt’s Lawn, which is located 1 mile West of J Highway, near the Pulaski County-Phelps County line. This collection covers 1878-1912.

Alice M., wife of William P. Ousley and daughter of William L. Phillips, was born on Mill Creek in Phelps County, MO, March 6, 1871 and died at her father’s house on Mill Creek, Dec. 13, 1897, aged 26 ys, 9 ms and 7 ds. Sister Alice was of a family of three children, 2 of whom survive her, namely: Mrs. Charles L. Phillips and Mrs. Jennie Smith, wife of George S. Smith. She was the mother of 3 children, namely: John Franklin, Charles Ernest, and Ida Ellen Ousley, all living. May 22, 1898 I preached a funeral sermon upon her life and death at the Maze School House in Pulaski County, MO, from the text found in Rev. 21X4. “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.
