Mary grew up in Hawaii and attended school. As a young girl, Mary was still living in Hawaii when the bombing of Pearl Harbor took place and shortly after that she came to the Mainland and lived in California for a few years.
On February 23, 1944, Mary was united in marriage to James “Jim” Lehman Wallis in Dallas, Texas. They shared many wonderful years together and were blessed with nine children: James Jr., John, Charles, Mark, Michael, Thomas, Timothy, Sharon and Patricia. Jim preceded her in death September 20, 2001.
Due to Jim being in the United States Navy, Mary and the family lived in various places throughout his career. For a time, Mary worked at Shandley’s Black Label Distributing in the Warehouse while they lived in California. On April 13, 1973, Mary and the family moved to the Waynesville area.
After moving to Waynesville, Mary became a member of the St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church and was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and loved to see new places while traveling. Most importantly, she treasured those times spent with her family and friends.
Mary passed away the evening of Tuesday, April 24, 2012 in the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics of Columbia, Missouri having attained the age of 89 years. She will be sadly missed by all those that knew and loved her.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory her seven sons: James Wallis, Jr. of Mammoth Springs, AR, John Wallis of Richmond, KY, Charles Wallis of San Diego, CA, Mark Wallis of Tucson, AZ, Michael Wallis of Shawnee, KS, Thomas Wallis of Las Vegas, NV and Timothy Wallis of Loveland, CO; two daughters: Sharon Wallis of Conroe, TX and Patricia Phillippe of Austin, TX; 16 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; several other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by four brothers: John, Tony, Albert and David Belles and four sisters: Minnie Christensen, Margaret Arroyo, Helen Palmer, and Julia Ortiz.
Funeral Mass was held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012 in the St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church of St. Robert with Father John Groner officiating. Organist Evelyn Horine accompanied the congregation as they sang responses. Serving as escorts were Jim, John, Mark, Michael, Tom and Tim Wallis, Jerry Phillippe and Jade Sandberg. Serving as honorary escort was Dan Wallis.
Burial followed in the Resurrection Cemetery of St. Robert. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert.
