He was born August 26, 1935 in Nebraska City, Nebraska, the son of Leland and Helen Woods. He married Mary Lou Rains on January 12, 1957 in Nebraska City.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 35 of Nebraska City, The American legion and the Eagles Club.
He was a 28 year veteran of the U.S. Army. He obtained rank of Command Sergeant Major. His last active duty assignment was Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri where he was Commandant of the Drill Sergeant School. Other assignments were Ft. Mead, Maryland, Ellison AFB, Alaska; west Point, New York; Canal Zone, Panama; Ft. Bliss, Texas and Ft. Carson, Colorado. He also served one year in Vietnam. He earned numerous medals during his 28 years in the Army which included the Nebraska National Guard, Army reserves, Kansas National Guard and Active Duty Army.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 31, 1986 at the First Christian Church of Nebraska City. Military rites were by the American Legion Honor Guard, Post No. 8, of Nebraska City.
The family suggests memorials to the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 35 of Nebraska City, Nebraska.
Gude Mortuary was in charge of funeral arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Mary lou of Nebraska City and two sons, Rick Woods of Beatrice, Nebraska and Bob Woods, of Kearney, Nebraska, his daughter-in-law, Tina of Beatrice and granddaughter, Richelle. Also surviving are his mother, Helen Woods of Nebraska City; his brother, Don Woods of Dunbar, Nebraska and three sisters, Mrs. Gale (Pat) Cameron of Omaha, Nebraska, Karen Carver of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mrs. Dale (Judy) Horstmann of Nebraska City.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leland Woods.
