Abraham Echols Rowden 1818-1883

Died, at his residence in Dixon, Pulaski county, Mo., Mr. A. E. Rowden, on the 15th day of August, A.D. 1883, of consumption, aged 65 years 6 months and 20 days. Mr. Rowden was born in Roane County, Tenn., January 25, 1818, and settled in Osage county, Mo., in November, 1841. In 1846, at the age of 28 years he was elected a judge of the Osage county court. He made a canvass of Osage county in 1850 as a Benton candidate for the legislature and was elected. And again in 1854 he was re-elected judge of the Osage county court, and served as such until the organization of Maries county, and in 1855 was appointed a judge of the Maries county court by Gov. Sterling Price. In 1859 Mr. Rowden was elected surveyor for Maries county, and in 1862 was elected clerk of the circuit and county courts for a term of six years.

Mrs. Mariah Southard 1817-1883

This entry is from the J.J. Watts collection. John J. Watts hailed from Warren, Maine and moved to the northern Ozarks of Missouri sometime after the Civil War. He was a circuit-riding Baptist Minister and his territory covered Phelps, Pulaski, and Texas Counties and parts of Maries and Dent Counties. He established a cemetery, Watt’s Lawn, which is located 1 mile West of J Highway, near the Pulaski County-Phelps County line. This collection covers 1882-1912.

Mrs. Mariah Southard, born in Jackson Co., Tenn. Feb. 18th 1817, died on Baldridge, Dec 15th 1883, aged 66 ys. 9 ms. 27 ds. A funeral sermon was preached at the Baldridge Church from Job 14 X 14 by J.J. Watts June 1st 1884. A. Hendrix also preached a sermon, same time and place. She was the mother of Robert Welch and Susan E. Giddens, and sister of Nels Wood.

Mrs. Susan E., wife of John L. Giddens born _______Co., MO July 3d 1859, died at Baldridge, Pulaski Co., Dec 9th 1883, aged 24 ys. 5ms. and 6 ds. Singing, prayer and remarks at the grave near the residence by J.J. Watts, Dec. 11th 1883 1 p.m. A funeral sermon was preached upon her death and her mothers, Mrs Mariah Southard, from Job 14 X 14, by J.J. Watts June 1st 1884. A. Hendrix also preached a sermon, same time and place.
