MRS. C.H. COLLEY DEAD

Mrs. Ella A. Colley, wife of Chas. H. Colley, a clerk in the Secretary of State's office, died at their residence in Jefferson City last Sunday afternoon at 6:30 following a long illness of a complication of diseases. She had been very low for several months. About two months ago, besides her other sufferings, she was stricken blind and remained so until death came to her relief.

She was born in Miller county Mo. April 19, 1869. She was the daughter of Henry C. Houk of Indianapolis, Ind., who was at her bedside when the end came. April 21, 1887 she was united in marriage to C.H. Colley, and until five years ago they resided in Waynesville. To this union eleven children were born, nine of which live to mourn their mothers death. They are: Mrs. S.G. Ballard of Waynesville, Mrs. A.J. Schwaller, Mrs. Arch M. Woodson, Clyde, Morris, Milford, Buford, Arthur and Melba. Four brothers and five sisters also survive her. Mrs. Colley was a woman of noble character and sweet disposition and was universally loved and respected by all who knew her.

Her long suffering and affliction was met and borne with christian fortitude, believing to the last that she would eventually be again restored to health. She was a devout church member, a kind and affectionate mother, and a loving and faithful wife. Her life was put to a use that will win her an eternal reward. Funeral services were conducted at the M.E. Church South, in Waynesville Tuesday afternoon by Rev. H.W. Bostwick amidst a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. The remains were beautifully prepared for burial, in a splendid casket, the floral offerings from friends and relatives being very appropriate and imposing, including a wreath from the Secretary of State's office.

The remains were laid to rest in the Mitchell cemetery to await the eternal morning.

McClintic, a clerk in the Department of State; A.J. Schwaller and wife, Jefferson City; H.E. Rollins and family, J.F. Rhea and wife, all of Dixon.

Daniel Berkley Colley 1874-1902

DIED.

At his home on Colley Hollow, six miles west of Waynesville, on Friday, March 7, 1902, Daniel Berkley Colley, of tuberculosis.

He was born Feb. 25, 1874, was 28 years old, and leaves a wife and one child, two years old, to mourn his loss. Deceased was a model young man and had many friends in this county. He was a son of the late D.B. Colley, and a nephew of G.W. Colley, of this place.

Funeral services were conducted at the cemetery Saturday by Rev. T.J. Zumwalt, of the Baptist church, of which church deceased was a consistent member.

Mrs. Sarah C. Christeson 1824-1908

The death of Mrs. Sarah C. Christeson removes from our midst one of the oldest landmarks of
pulaski county. She was the eldest child of the late Cyrus Colley, who was one of the early pioneers of the county, and was born in the state of Kentucky, December 1, 1824.

In the year 1830 she emigrated with her parents to Missouri and settled on Colley Hollow and has resided in this immediate vicinity up to the time of her death. On October 21, 1844, she was married to E. J. Christeson, to which Union eleven children were born, eight of whom are yet living. In early life her husband became stricken with blindness, hereby causing the rearing of the children and the management of the family affairs to fall in a large extent upon her shoulders. She accepted the misfortune with Christian fortitude and Spartan courage and the fidelity with which she fulled that trust is best attested by her happy and prosperous family of children and grandchildren she leaves behind.

While of a retiring disposition, yet her cheerfulness was inspiring and her devotion to her family was of that noble, self-sacrificing quality which only a good, true, noble mother and the angels of heaven possess.

She had lived in this community for almost 80 years and she witnessed the transformation of a
trackless wilderness into beautiful town and farm. While she had lived for more than four score
years, yet every moment of that eventful life was benediction and a blessing to her loved ones.

Since the death of her husband she has made her home with the families of her children, at whose firesides she was ever an honored and welcome guest. She dies last Saturday at the residence of her son, Elisha, and was buried the following Sabbath at the family cemetery amid the tears and regrets of a large concourse of relatives and friends.

Margaret E. (Tilley) Colley 1840-1921

Aunt Margaret E. Colley, who has been in ill health for some time, died early last Sunday morning, September 10th, 1921, at the home of her son, Lee Hobbs, of near town, at the age of 81 years and 20 days.

She was born in Pulaski County, Missouri, on August 12, 1840, and on January 26, 1860, she was united in marriage with Joseph J. Hobbs. To this union three children were born: Lee Hobbs, W.W. Hobbs (deceased), and Josephine J. Hobbs (deceased).

She was again married to Daniel B. Colley in the year 1870. (Mr. Colley departed this life in the year 1886.) To this union three children were born, two died in infancy and one, Barkley Colley lived to manhood.

Aunt Margaret was one of a family of ten children, only one of whom survive her: a sister, Mrs. William L. Bradford of near Waynesville. The brothers and sisters who preceded her to the grave were: Mrs. Mary Morgan, Jasper Tilley, Isaac Newton Tilley, who was murdered a few miles north of Waynesville during the Civil War, W. Lee Tilley, Mrs. Mahalia Collier, Mrs. Wm. Pippen, Mrs. R.L. Christeson Sr., and two sisters, who died in infancy. Her death came only 23 days after the death of her twin brother, Wilson Lee Tilley.

About the year 1868 she was united with the M.E. Church, South, and remained a true member until her death.

Although her suffering seemed almost unbearable during her last days she was calm and peaceful, and gave her son the assurance that she was prepared to meet her Creator.

The remains were conveyed to the Bradford Cemetery near town Sunday Afternoon, where funeral services were conducted by the Rev. O.E. Patton of the Waynesville M.E. Church.

Note: Daughter of Wilson L. Tilley and Betsy Tippitt Tilley. Jasper Vaughn was a first cousin to the Tilley's, and also went by Jasper Tilley.

Herbert H. Colley, Sr. 1931-2009

Herbert H. Colley, Sr., of Bella Vista, Arkansas, formerly of Dixon, was born on August 24, 1931, in Maries County, a son of Beauford E. and Mary (Spratley) Colley, and departed this life at 8:01 P.M., Tuesday evening, June 23, 2009, at his residence in Bella Vista, Arkansas. Mr. Colley had been in failing health for some time and had attained the age of 77 years, 9 months and 29 days.

Mr. Colley was united in marriage on July 10, 1954, in Dixon to Cleta Mae Alexander and to this union three children were born. Mr. Colley was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, infant Larry Colley, Edward Colley and Harold Colley; and one sister, Norma Marlene Bigelow.

Mr. Colley was a veteran of the United States Navy and the Army & Air Force Reserves. He was baptized in 1946 while attending the United Methodist Church and later moved his membership to the First Christian Church, Dixon. He was a member of the Dixon Lions Club and received his Emergency Medical Technician Certification from the University of Missouri, Columbia in June 1977 and had worked as a firefighter at Ft. Leonard Wood for 30 years, retiring in 1986, having attained the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. He enjoyed farming, golfing and hunting.

Those left to mourn the passing of Mr. Colley include: his wife, Mrs. Cleta Colley, Bella Vista, Arkansas; one son and daughter-in-law, Herbert H. (Jr.) and Denise Colley, Bella Vista, Arkansas; two daughters and one son-in-law, Sandra DuPriest, Cordova, Tennessee; Cindra and Arthur Shinabargar, Lee’s Summit, Missouri; one brother, James Ray Colley, Bolivar; two sisters, Mary Ellen Bunch, Carson City, Nevada and Betty Lou Truax, Crawfordsville, Indiana; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation for Mr. Colley will be held from 6 – 8 p.m., Friday, June 26, 2009 in the Long-Gilbert Funeral Home, Dixon.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 27, 2009, in the Long-Gilbert Funeral home, Dixon with Pastor Duane Mitchell officiating. Interment with full military honors will be in the Dixon Cemetery.
