CPT (Ret) Gary L. Kindler 1934-2009

Gary Leigh Kindler passed away November 11, 2009 at his home near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of 75 years and 16 days.

Gary was born October 26, 1934 in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. When he was a young boy, his family moved to the Oceanside/Carlsbad, California area where he grew up. Gary graduated from Oceanside/Carlsbad Union High School, Class of 1952.

Later that year Gary joined the U.S. Marie Corp. He dedicated over 22 years to the service of his country, and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He received several awards and commendations for his faithful and honorable service. Captain Kindler retired from active duty in 1974.

After retiring from the military, Gary made his home in Oceanside, where he worked for Prudential Insurance Company from 1974 to 1988. He then moved to 29 Palms, California. Gary was active in the Elks Lodge, MCA, TROA and MMOA.

In June, 2000, Gary was united in marriage with Bonnie Ruth (McCauley) Carey. Gary and Taylor Jo, as she is affectionately known, enjoyed raising and showing miniature show horses. They made many wonderful friends traveling around and participating in the horse shows. Gary also loved his dogs, Sammy, Winky and Gunther.

Gary was dearly loved, and will be sadly missed by his wife: Taylor Jo; four children: Jeffery Kindler (Lily) of Yuma, Arizona, Anna Mapston (Keith) of Fallbrook, California, Ken Kindler (Lynne) of Sebastian, Florida and Susan Bailey (Anthony) of Richland, Missouri; one step-daughter: Trina Carey of Palm Springs, California; mother: Jackie Kindler of Barstow, California; four siblings: Matthew Kindler of Sedona, Arizona, Yvonne Jett of Victorville, California, Kathy Kindler of Barstow, California and Mary Lou Keith (Kelly) of Twenty-Nine Palms,
California; 15 grandchildren; 2 ½ great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his father: Lester Bowen; his mother: Doris Orylla (Hunsaker) Kindler; his dad: Merle D. Kindler; step mother: Evelyn Bowen and his step son: Jim Carey.

Funeral services with military honors were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 16, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Richland with LT James Scott Storie, CHC, USN and Gary’s brother, Rev. Matthew Kindler officiating Gary’s son, Ken, and wife, Taylor Jo also shared memories with the congregation. Military honors were provided by U.S. Marines from Fort Leonard Wood. Recordings of “Ave Marie”, “Amazing Grace” and “Sissy’s Song” were played. Serving as escorts were the U.S. Military. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Richland.
