Herb grew up in Benton County where he attended Dillon School and the Lutheran School. Even as a young boy, Herb worked long, hard hours on the family farm, a lifestyle and work ethic that would serve him well throughout his life.

He enjoyed horses, whether riding, showing, trading or breaking them, as well as working his mules with their wagons. In his later years, he loved four wheeling and spending time visiting with friends at the Warren Senior Center in Richland.
On April 7, 1946, Herb was united in marriage with Mary Laverne Attwood, and to this union four children were born: Joyce, Linda, Danny and David. Mary preceded Herb in death on July 15, 2008.
