To Hwa was born May 24, 1934 in Pusan, Korea, one of four children born to the union of the late Yum Sung Su and Sun Oak (Lee).
To Hwa’s early years were spent in Pusan, but the family soon moved to Seoul where she lived until she met an American soldier named Gerald James “Jerry” Schroeder. Jerry and To Hwa were married on August 5, 1972. They shared nearly 28 years together before Jerry preceded her in death on May 26, 2000.
Jerry retired from the U.S. Army at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he and To Hwa made their home until his death. To Hwa worked as a cook at the mess halls on post for 21 years before retiring in 1994. She was a faithful, active member of the Korean Baptist Church in Waynesville. In her leisure time, she enjoyed dancing and working in her vegetable and flower gardens.
To Hwa was dearly loved, and will be sadly missed by her nieces: Pumi Bray (Stephen) of Hartford, Connecticut and SiYoung Yoon of St. Louis; nephew: JinYoung Yu of Germany; a brother: Young Jun Yum of Kyung Kito, Korea; sister: Chun Hwa Yu of East Hartford, Connecticut; great nephews: Chad & Eric and great niece: Christy.
In addition to her parents and husband, To Hwa was preceded in death by one brother: HanJune Yum.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 25, 2009 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert with Rev. Jai Duk Rhee officiating. Pianist Kyung Rhee accompanied the congregation as they sang “Amazing Grace”. Serving as escorts were family and friends.
Burial followed in the Sunset Memorial Estates Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.
