Miss Effie Williams died at the home of her parents in this city last Saturday morning at 7:00 o'clock. The funeral was held from the Baptist church by Rev. J.L. Hicks on Sunday evening at 3:30 o'clock, after which the body was laid to rest in the city cemetery.

DEATH OF JOHN B. CORNWELL

John B. Cornwell died at his home in Richland, Sunday night, January 14. He was born April 25, 1830, near Nashville, Tennessee. Thus he was 75 years, 8 months, and 19 days old at his death. He removed from the place of his birth at the age of 30, going to Kentucky, where he lived until 14 years ago when he came to Laclede county, Missouri. He has lived in and near Richland for the past seven years. He was a shoemaker, working his trade until within a few days of his death. He served in the union army for four years. Thus, one by one, the old veterans are answering the roll call “over there.” He was living with his fifth wife, having buried four others. He had been a member of the Christian church since 1854, and held his membership in the church at Richland when he died. Having lived a faithful Christian life, he died with the hope of the Christian’s reward. Services were held at the home on Monday, conducted by J.R. Blunt, after which his body was lain to rest in the city of the dead, south of town.

The body of Mrs. John Thompson, who was before her marriage Miss Priscilla Green, was brought here from Cameron, Okla., and was buried Monday afternoon. She had many friends here, who regretted very much to hear of her death. She was a member of the Baptist church, where the funeral was held. She leaves a husband, four children, a mother, two sisters, and five brothers to mourn her loss.

The death angel has again visited our town and removed from our midst Miss Clara, the beloved daughter of John Thompson, aged 14 years and three months, with typhoid fever. The remains were laid to rest in the Richland cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Elders Manes and Hawkins. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community.

Whereas; That the great author of our being has, in his infinite wisdom and tender mercy, seen fit to call to her reward after a brief illness and suffering of typhoid fever, little "Clara", age 14 years, second eldest daughter of Bro. John Thompson, therefore be it, resolved, that we the members of Gasconade lodge No. 439 of the Independent Order Odd Fellows in regular session assembled, do hereby extend to the father and three remaining children, our deep regret and profound sympathy in this another great trial of sad bereavement, following so closely the inevitable taking away of the dearly beloved wife and mother. Be it further resolved, that a transcript of these resolutions be offered for publication in the county papers and that a copy of the same be made part of the records of our lodge. Also that a copy of the original draft be placed in the possession of the grief stricken family.

Uncle Mat Mays, a man whom every child in Richland knew and loved, passed into the mysterious beyond last Friday night. He had been an invalid for several years and only survived his wife, Aunt Betty, three weeks.

Nothing which has occurred during recent months has caused such general regret as the death of Mrs. Mary J. McFall, wife of Robert McFall, which occurred last Wednesday. The news of her sudden taking off was a great shock to the community, as she had apparently been in her usual health until with four days of her death. Death was caused from a stroke of paralysis. The remains were taken to Richland on Monday for interment.

The deceased leaves a husband and four children who have the sympathy of the entire community in this their trying bereavement.

Paul Goforth 1905-1986

Paul Goforth, son of Jim and Fannie Gardner Goforth, was born in Springfield, Missouri on June 19, 1905, and departed this life September 22, 1986 at Lake Ozark General Hospital, Osage Beach, Missouri.

On October 3, 1926 he was united in marriage with Edith Holdren, and to this union was born three children.  He is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lois Jean, his wife Edith, who passed away April 30, 1985, his parents, three brothers: George, Frank, and Vincent; two sisters: Della Winifred and Zella Evans, and one grandson, James Allen Goforth.

Paul has been a member of the Glover Chapel Church of Christ since he was a young man.

He has lived in this area most all of his life, and has been in both turkey and Grade A Dairy Farming before retiring in 1977.

He is survived by two sons: Jim Bill Goforth of Richland; Charley Paul Goforth of Linn Creek, Missouri; one brother, Davy Goforth of Richland; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held from Colonial Funeral Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, 1986 with Rev. Roger Marshall and Pryor Ray Prewett officiating.

Music was provided by DeLores Shadel.

Burial was in the Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapels.

Aniela (Jakimiec) Gottfried 1905-1986

Aniela Gottfried, daughter of Jan Jakimiec and Cieliczka Josef Jakimiec was born May 15, 1905 and passed away July 24, 1986.  She was preceded in death by her husband, and both her parents.

A Rosary service was held at Colonial Funeral Chapel at 7:00 p.m. on July 25, 1986.

Funeral Mass as held at the St. Jude Catholic Church in Richland, Missouri July 26, 1986 at 10:00 a.m. with Father John Pender and Rev. Robert Bixby officiating.

Interment was in the Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Chapels, Inc.

Aniela was born in Poland, but had lived in Richland for many years.  She was a member of the St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Richland.  Aniela was a very kind and loving person and will be greatly missed by her relatives and friends.

She leaves to mourn her passing one son Ryszard of Richland, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

David James Burgess 1955-1986

David James Burgess, a son of Dorothy and Jack Burgess, was born in Garden City, Kansas on January 13, 1955, and departed this life on October 23, 1986 in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 31 years.  He spent most of his life in Lansing, Kansas.

At the age of 10, David professed his faith in Jesus Christ and became a member of the Deerfield Southern Baptist Church in Deerfield, Kansas.  He was baptized by his father.  At the time of his death he was a member of the Nall Avenue Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kansas.

David graduated from Lansing High School in 1973, and then attended Kansas University, and received a degree in Physical Education.  He also attended school and became a licenses beautician, and managed several hair salons in Kansas City.

Prior to his death David was a teachers aid in the Kansas City Elementary Public School System.

He is survived by his parents Jack and Dorothy Burgess of Lansing, Kansas; one brother Billy Dean Burgess of Lansing, Kansas; one sister, Lois Jean Owen of Leavenworth, Kansas; his paternal grandparents, Alonzo and Julia Burgess of Hazelgreen, and his maternal grandmother Mrs. Claudine Newell of Richland, other relatives and many friends.

David is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, James Newell.

Funeral services were from Colonial Funeral Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27, 1986 with Rev. Dan Redmond officiating.

Music was provided by Rusty Shadel, soloist and Marcia Shadel, organist.

Burial was in the Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapels.

Harry Alvin Carroll 1903-1986

Harry Alvin Carroll, son of Lewis and Sarah Margaret Coffman Carroll was born July 1, 1903 in Pulaski County and departed this life on September 9, 1986 at the Lebanon Care Center, at the age of 83 years, two months, and eight days.

He was united in marriage with Leta Saltzman on June 16, 1924, and to this union was born two daughters, both surviving.

As a carpenter in the Pulaski County area, Harry worked for Frank Warner at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri for several years.

As a young man, Harry professed his faith in Jesus Christ and became a member of the First Baptist Church in Richland, where he has remained a member.

Those surviving include his wife Leta of the home; two daughters: Roberta Soltvedt and her husband Lucian Edward of Bloomington, Minnesota; and Juanita North and her husband James Dillard of Lebanon, Missouri; eight grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: William, Joey, Johnny and Andy Carroll, and five sisters: Ethel Morrison, Edna Ayers, Grace Palmer, Eve Brown, and Mabel Palmer.

Funeral services were from First Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 12, 1986, with Rev. Roger Marshall officiating.

Music was provided by Dwight Roam, Bruce Pafford, and Rusty Shadel with Marlene Brown, pianist.

Burial was in the Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapels.

Carrie Marie Harris 1905-1986

Carrie Marie Harris daughter of William and Otilla Harris was born June 22, 1905 in Richland, Mo., and departed this life September 14, 1986 in Webster Grove, Missouri at the age of 81 years.

On August 4, 1924 she was united in marriage with Carl Grant Harris and to this union two children were born, both surviving.  After their marriage they moved to St. Louis and reared their family.  In 1943 they returned to Richland, and again returned to Richland in 1877 after living in various towns to be near Mr. Harris’ employment.  Due to ill health she has made her home with her children for the past several years.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, September 17, 1986 at 1:00 p.m. at the Oaklawn Cemetery with Rev. William Owens officiating.

She is survived by one son Gene; one daughter Marie; three granddaughters, Linda, Karla and Brenda; three great- grandchildren

June Ellen (Root) Zeigenbein 1936-1986

June Ellen Root Zeigenbein was born June 11, 1936 at Lebanon, Missouri to Raymond Root and Jaunita June Goss Root.  She departed this life on August 11, 1986 at her home in Brumley, Missouri.

She was married to Ivan Charles Zeigenbein and they lived the majority of their years together on a farm south of Brumley, Missouri.

She was a member of the Brumley Christian Church and loved her Church family.  She also served as a member of the Board of the Brumley Christian Church for a number of years.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 14, 1986 at 2:00 P.M. with Ministers Lee Todd, Rev. Jim McGowin and Ralph Byrd officiating, under the Direction of the Colonial Funeral Chapel.

Resting Place was in the Oaklawn Cemetery.

Reavil Edwin Hankins Sr. 1916-1986

Reavil Edwin Hankins Sr., was born on April 14, 1916 to Elmer and Mamie Harris Hankins, and departed this life August 22, 1986, after attaining the age of seventy years, four months, and eight days.

On July 22, 1939, he was united in marriage with Charlotte Elizabeth Nickolaus.  To this union was born five children, Peggy Lambert of Brookfield, Missouri, Kenneth Hankins of Columbus, Georgia, MSGT Keith Hankins of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Sharon Gundram and Reavil Hankins Jr. (Skip) both of Richland.

In October 1952 he received Jesus as His Savior and in 1953 he surrendered to God’s call to the ministry.  He pastured the Shepherd Hopewell Baptist Church, the Hawkeye Baptist Church and the Cedar Bluff Baptist Church in Pulaski Baptist Association and the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Phelps Baptist Church Association.

At the time of his death he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richland.  He was an active participant in the Pulaski Baptist Association serving two terms as Moderator, one as Budget Chairman, one as Stewardship Chairman, and many years as a Counselor at youth and children’s camps.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 26, 1986 at 11:00 A.M. with Ministers, Rev. Roger Marshall and Rev. Dennis Crowder officiating under the Direction of the First Baptist Church.

Resting place was in the Oaklawn Cemetery.

Raymond Raines 1915-1986

Raymond Raines, son of W.J. and Isabelle Carr Raines, was born in Swedeborg, Missouri on July 4, 1915 and departed this life May 24, 1986 at his home in Richland, at the age of seventy years.

On July 18, 1935 he was united in marriage with Esther Manes, and to this union was born three children.

Raymond professed his faith in Jesus Christ at the age of twenty one, and united with the Bethlehem Baptist Church, later moving his membership to the Swedeborg Baptist Church and at the time of his death was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richland.

He retired from Civil Service, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he was a bus driver.  He has made Richland his home for most of his life.

Funeral services were from Colonial Funeral Chapel 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 26, 1986, with Ministers Pryor Ray Prewett and Rev. Roger Marshall.

Resting place is in the Oaklawn Cemetery.

Escorts were Jim Baker, Loren Keeth, David Goff, Weldon Evans, Wayne King, and Greg Raines.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four half brothers, Snoden, Claude, Clyde and Earl and three half sisters, Iva, Sylvia, and Omah, one son, Coy Gene Raines and one brother, Melvin G. Raines. 

Elmer Workman, Jr. 1921-2003

Elmer Workman, Jr., son of Elmer Workman, Sr. and Eula Mae Miller Workman, was born in Richland on April 7, 1921 and departed this life March 4, 2003 in Richland.

In 1940 he was united in marriage with Loretta Wall and to this union were born three children.
He attended and graduated from Richland High School in 1939. He had been a member of the American Legion Post #240 for 51 years.
Elmer served his country with the United States Air Force from May 1943 to September 1945 attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served with the 306th bombardment group, was a decorated World War II veteran, receiving the Air Offensive Europe Campaign with three bronze stars, two Air Medals with five oak leaf clusters, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a waist gunner on a B17, flew thirty five missions, was shot down over France, rescued by local residents and taken to safety in England.
In 1945, Elmer and Loretta opened a restaurant called Elmer's G.I. Drive-In. In 1946 he went into the used car business and continued this venture for over 50 years, buying cars in St. Louis and selling the majority of them at the 166 Auto Auction in Springfield. Elmer was a very generous man with his employees and customers. Many who bought cars and couldn't pay for them were never asked to bring them back, he just took the loss.

In 1951 he was called back to active duty during the Korean Conflict. The restaurant was then sold to his brother Ronald Workman and renamed Workman's Restaurant.

Those surviving include his one son, Coy Workman and wife Iva Nell of Richland; two daughters, Leah Helms and husband Dennis of Richland, and Lana Dunham of Waco, Texas; one sister, Norma Jean Johnson of Richland; a sister-in-law, Opal Workman of Richland; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; faithful dog Mickey; other relatives and friends.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Kate Workman; one brother, Ronald Workman; one son-in-law, Fred Dunham; and one brother-in-law, Robert Johnson.

Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2003 at Colonial Chapel, Richland, with Minister Bob Leinbaugh officiating. Escorts were Gilbert Whitham, Robert Holloway, Robert Decker, Larry Baranowski, Larry Dale Powers and Bill Decker, Jr. Honorary Escorts were Buck Hooker, Dick Flynn, Floyd Miller, Toot Smith, Bud Trower, Pete Wilson, Carl Tanner, Don Tanner, Roy Henry, Dick Smith, Harold Johnson and Floyd Rainey. Jesse B. Elam 1917-2003

Jesse B. Elam, son of William Joseph Elam and Nettie Evans Elam, was born March 1, 1917 in Richland, and passed away Sept. 6, 2003 in Springfield at the age of 86.

On Aug. 23, 1941 he was united in marriage with Evelyn Gallion and to this union four children were born.

Jesse accepted Christ at an early age and served faithfully as Deacon of Independence Baptist Church since November of 1947, where he attended without fail. Jesse always told the story that he was saved while laying out in the pasture with a hound dog sitting on his chest.

He served on the board of directors for Production Credit Association for twenty-five years and on the board of directors for Laclede Electric Cooperative for almost 40 years.

Jesse loved his horses, cattle, dogs and possum hunting in his younger years. He especially loved the time spent with his family. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye. He loved teaching them to ride horses, the four wheeler and all about life. He was born and lived his entire life on the farm his grandfather settled on in the 1840's.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn of the home; one son, Robert Elam and wife Pat of Richland; one daughter, Elizabeth Elam of Richland; a son-in-law, Frank Finger of Fayetteville, Ark.; one brother, Bill Elam of Richland; four sisters, Flora Lawrance of Clearwater, Fla., Bonnie McIntyre of St. Louis, Ethel Wilson and Grace McCleary, both of Richland; seven grandchildren: Mark Finger, Zachary Finger and wife Aricka, Sarah Ice and husband John, Julie Bennett and husband Scott, Jessica Elam, Joe Elam, Becky May; seven great grandchildren: Elizabeth Ice, Jackson Finger, Seth, Gabriel and Josey May, Hannah and Ethan Finger; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. His friends were like family and many said they never heard anyone say a bad word about Jesse Elam.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Gay Finger; one infant son, Christopher Elam; one son-in-law, Jim May; a brother, Roger Elam; and three sisters, Rose McCamon, Anna Bowling and Mildred Clark.

Jesse was a true leader in all things and he was our HERO.

Services for Mr. Elam were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 at Independence Baptist Church, with Pastor Ed Hamilton officiating. Music was provided by Morris McDaniel. Evelyn Lea (Gallion) Elam 1923-2006

Evelyn Lea Elam, 82, a homemaker of Richland, Mo., passed away October 7, 2006, at her home near Richland. She was born on November 13, 1923, near Richland, Mo., to Melvin and Eva Williams Gallion. She was united in marriage with Jesse Elam on August 23, 1941. She was one of the founding members of Independence Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jesse; three children: infant son, Christopher; daughter, Gay Finger; and son, Robert Elam; one brother, Bill Gallion; one sister, Joy Sledge; and a son-in-law, Jim May. She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Elam of Richland; one daughter-in-law, Pat Elam of Richland; one son-in-law, Frank Finger of Fayetteville, Arkansas; one sister, Pat Laucks, Jefferson City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Mark and Zachary Finger, Sara Ice, Julie Bennett, Jessica and Joe Elam; eight great-grandchildren, Ethan, Hannah, Seth, Gabriel, Josey, Elizabeth, Ian and Hunter. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at Independence Baptist Church near Hazelgreen, with Revs. Ed Hamilton and John Dinwiddie officiating. Alice C. (Hively) Wickman 1900-1986

Alice C. Wickman, age 85, of 416 North Wall, Joplin, Missouri, passed away at 11:17 a.m. Tuesday at the Oak Hill Hospital in Joplin, Missouri following a short illness.  She was born July 16, 1900 at Wild Wood, Missouri.  She moved to Joplin area in 1962 from Richland, Missouri.

Her husband, Harold A. Wickman preceded her in death October 24, 1961.  She is survived by one son Bud Wickman of Joplin, Missouri; one daughter, Mrs. Fern Chizek of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; one brother, Dick Hively of Dixon, Missouri; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Sharp and Mrs. Violet Page both of Waynesville, Missouri and Mrs. Fern Spaulding of Mason City, Illinois; four grandchildren, one great grandchild and three great great grandchildren.

Services will be Friday morning at 10:00 am at the Parker Mortuary Chapel in Joplin, Missouri.  Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Richland, Missouri.  Reverend Kemple will be officiating.  The

Barton L. Warren, Sr. 1907-1986

Barton L. Warren, Sr., 78, Richland, Missouri, died Thursday, January 23, 1986, at Cox Medical South, Springfield, Missouri.

He was born December 20, 1907, in Richland, Missouri, the son of Charles Wesley and Florence Brock Warren.  He was a valedictorian of his Richland High School graduating class, and graduated with honors from the University of Missouri - Columbia.  An attorney, he also graduated first in his class at Washington University Law School (St. Louis) in 1931.  He was admitted to the Missouri Bar in 1930 and received his 50 year membership pin from the Missouri Bar Association at a ceremony in St. Louis, Missouri, in September, 1980.

He was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in campaigns in North Africa and throughout the Pacific.  He was the third generation of his family to own and manage H.E. Warren and Sons department store in Richland.  He was chairman of the Pulaski County Democratic Central Committee from 1946 to 1976 and chairman of the Eighth Congressional District Democratic Committee from 1962-1966.  He attended the Democratic National Conventions in 1960 and 1964 as a delegate.  He was a director and officer of Boatmen’s Bank of Pulaski County (formerly Pulaski County Bank) from 1931 to 1979.  He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.  He served on the Richland School Board for almost twenty tears, and was President of the Board during the years that the present elementary school and high school were built.  He was a member of numerous other civic clubs and organizations.

Memorial services were held at the Richland United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 26, 1986, which were led by Rev. John Appling and Rev. Ralph Rowe.  Burial was in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Richland, under the direction of the Colonial Funeral Chapel of Richland.

A memorial fund was established to carry on his charitable interests, which is named the Barton L. Warren Foundation, PO Box 688, Richland, Missouri.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Underwood Warren; three sons, David, Gregory, Warren, Richland, Dr, Barton L. Warren, II, Charleston, South Carolina, and Bruce Brownfield Warren, Richland; two daughters, Margaret Elaine McNicholl, St. Charles, Missouri, and Barbara Lorraine Warren, New Orleans, Louisiana; granddaughter, Sara Ashley Warren, Richland; a brother, Gordon W. Warren, Richland, and two sisters, Lillie W. Keller, Springfield, and Emma L. Hoyer, Richland, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Brock Warren and Holland S. Warren, and sister, Lorraine Warren Young.
