Ernest Woods 1935-1986

Ernest Woods,age 50, of 1013 5th Avenue, Nebraska City, Nebraska, passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital, Nebraska City on March 28th after a long illness.

He was born August 26, 1935 in Nebraska City, Nebraska, the son of Leland and Helen Woods.  He married Mary Lou Rains on January 12, 1957 in Nebraska City.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 35 of Nebraska City, The American legion and the Eagles Club.

He was a 28 year veteran of the U.S. Army.  He obtained rank of Command Sergeant Major.  His last active duty assignment was Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri where he was Commandant of the Drill Sergeant School.  Other assignments were Ft. Mead, Maryland, Ellison AFB, Alaska; west Point, New York; Canal Zone, Panama; Ft. Bliss, Texas and Ft. Carson, Colorado.  He also served one year in Vietnam.  He earned numerous medals during his 28 years in the Army which included the Nebraska National Guard, Army reserves, Kansas National Guard and Active Duty Army.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 31, 1986 at the First Christian Church of Nebraska City.  Military rites were by the American Legion Honor Guard, Post No. 8, of Nebraska City.

The family suggests memorials to the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 35 of Nebraska City, Nebraska.

Gude Mortuary was in charge of funeral arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Mary lou of Nebraska City and two sons, Rick Woods of Beatrice, Nebraska and Bob Woods, of Kearney, Nebraska, his daughter-in-law, Tina of Beatrice and granddaughter, Richelle.  Also surviving are his mother, Helen Woods of Nebraska City; his brother, Don Woods of Dunbar, Nebraska and three sisters, Mrs. Gale (Pat) Cameron of Omaha, Nebraska, Karen Carver of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mrs. Dale (Judy) Horstmann of Nebraska City.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leland Woods.

Charles Raymond Woods 1922-1981

Charles Raymond Woods was born in Phelps County, Missouri, on May 21, 1922, the son of Charles and Octavia Blackwell Woods and passed away in the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia, Missouri on Tuesday, April 28, 1981.  He had attained the age of 68 years.

Raymond was united in marriage to Faye Robertson in August, 1935 and unto this union 2 sons and 2 daughters were born.

He is survived by his wife Faye, of the home, 2 sons, Billy of Cahokia, Illinois and Dale of the home, 2 daughters, Loretta Rose of Dixon and Dorothy Kohler of Imperial, Missouri, 2 brothers, George of Jefferson City and Lewis of Arcadia, Missouri, 1 sister, Lola Wilson of Mantica, California, 12 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by 1 sister Mable Carter, 1 grandson Billy Joe Woods and 1 son-in-law Carlis Humphrey.

 When he was first married he worked for the WPA building roads, he then worked at Ft. Leonard Wood as a meat cutter for the hospital.  He went to St. Louis where he worked at the Fisher Body Plant and the Swift Meat Packing Company.  Then he moved back to Dixon and went back to work at Fort Leonard Wood, retiring after a total of 17 years with the Civil Service.  After retiring, he worked in Dixon for the Dixon MFA Coop, Dixon R-1 School and the last 11 years part-time for the Gilbert Funeral Home.  In his early years he had a radio program in Rolla where he was known as “Cowboy Ray” where he played his guitar and sang.  On Sunday afternoons he had a program with the late Rev. and Mrs. Henry Prewett, and for awhile had a program in Lebanon.

Raymond was a member of the Kenner Church of God, Arlington Masonic Lodge #346 where he was Past Master and was serving his second term as Dixon City Councilman.  He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held in the Gilbert Chapel on Friday, May 1, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Wilson Davis officiating.  Burial was in the Kenner Cemetery under the direction of the Gilbert Funeral Home of Dixon.  Serving as pallbearers were Junior Miller, Jim Long, Arnold Bassett, Richard Cockriel, Marvin Rose and Melvin (Bud) Kohler.  Masonic Services were given on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Violet Loraine (Anderson) Collins 1940-2011

Violet Loraine Collins, 70 of Springfield, passed away Saturday morning, July 30, 2011, at her home.

Daughter of the late Leslie and Ethel (Woods) Anderson, Violet was born October 9, 1940, in the community of Hanna, Missouri, in Pulaski County.

On February 6, 1960, Violet married Charles Leclair Collins, and they shared two children, Terry and Charlene.

Violet was employed with the Wal-Mart company for 24 years. She enjoyed family gatherings, traveling in her R.V., and going to gospel music concerts. Violet had a deep, abiding faith in her Lord, Jesus Christ, and attended church in Falcon, Fairview, Laquey and Richland.

Mrs. Collins is survived by her husband: Charles; two children: Terry Collins (Carol) of Waynesville and Charlene "Shelly" Cherner (Gary), Atlanta, Georgia; six siblings: Lindell Anderson, Ft. Worth, Texas, William "Bill" Anderson, Ozark, Evelyn Crossland, Springfield, Vera Rinck, Doolittle, Marilyn Anderson of the state of Montana and Joyce Blankenship of Laquey; four grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, August 1, at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, Springfield, under direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory, Waynesville/St. Robert.

Visitation will also be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 2, at Memorial Chapels and Crematory, Waynesville/St. Robert.

Violet Loraine (Anderson) Collins 1940-2011

Violet Loraine Collins, 70 of Springfield, passed away Saturday morning, July 30, 2011, at her home.

Etta Dye Woods 1879-1977

Etta Dye Woods was born on November 16, 1879, near Big Piney, Missouri, to Cornelius Webb Dye and Laura Roberts Dye, and departed this life on May 22, 1977, at the home of her daughter in St. Louis, having attained the age of 97 ½ years. Although she still considered Pulaski County her home, she had resided in St. Louis since 1931.

In 1903 she was united in marriage to Robert Breeden and to this union was born a daughter, Lela. He preceded her in death in 1907 and in 1912 she was united in marriage to Joseph Woods. To this union was born two daughters, Jewel and Doris. Mr. Woods preceded her in death in 1933.

Early in life she gave her life to Christ and united with the Baptist Church and remained true to her faith and attended church until health problems prevented it.

Survivors include her daughters, Lela Greer of Sacramento, California, Jewel Light and Doris Burkhardt, both of St. Louis, one step-daughter, Vera Reed of St. Louis. Two grandchildren, Joetta Roth of Ennis, Texas and Gary light of St. Louis. Also surviving are nine great grand children and two great great grandchildren, two brothers Burley Dye of Waynesville and Bland Dye of Laquey, and one sister Odessa Roam, of Waynesville.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 23, at 2 p.m. at the Long Moss Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Waynesville with rev. Harvey Dye officiating, Interment was in the Big Piney Cemetery under the direction of Long Moss Williams Funeral Homes Inc.

Pallbearers were Bob Davis, Bill Dye, Dale Roam, Burton A. Dye, Herman Dye, Roy Lee Dye, and George Lane.

Blanche T. Montgomery Woods 1848-1931

MRS BLANCHE WOODS DIES AT AGE 82
Funeral Held at Bloodland

Blanche T. Montgomery Woods was born in Gleaner, Ill in 1848, and died in Centralia, Illinois, at the home of her son, J.E. Woods, January 16, 1931, aged 82 years, 6 months and 16 days.

She was united in marriage to G.M. Woods, in Waynesville, in 1867, and to this union 8 children were born, all of whom are living, as follows: J.E. Woods, of Centralia, Illinois, Alice Dean, of Waynesville, W.A. Woods of Richland, E.T. Woods of Waynesville, Mrs. Anna McClellan of St. Louis, Mrs, Myrtle Brown of St. Louis, Ellen Thomson of St. Louis, and Mrs. Mary Hudgens of Tribune, Missouri.

Besides her children she leaves to mourn her departure 30 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, a host of other relatives, neighbors, and friends.

She was converted many years ago but did not unite with any church, but she often spoke of death as going to meet her Saviour, and lived a devoted Christian life.

She had been seriously ill for several months, and for 6 weeks before her passing, was helpless, death being caused by a complication of diseases.

Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Church at Bloodland by Rev. Smith, after which interment was made in Bloodland Cemetery.

A large crowd was in attendance among which were her 8 children.

Michael Woods 1858-1903

This entry is from the J.J. Watts collection. John J. Watts hailed from Warren, Maine and moved to the northern Ozarks of Missouri sometime after the Civil War. He was a circuit-riding Baptist Minister and his territory covered Phelps, Pulaski, and Texas Counties and parts of Maries and Dent Counties. He established a cemetery, Watt’s Lawn, which is located 1 mile West of J Highway, near the Pulaski County-Phelps County line. This collection covers 1878-1912.

Michael Woods died on Woodland Valley, near Moab P.O. in Pulaski Co., MO, March 25th 1903 at 11-30 p.m., aged 45 ys & 25 ds. A funeral at Pleasant Hill Church July 5th 1903 at 3 p.m.. Mr. Woods was born in Washington Co., MO, Feb. 28th 1858 and was a son of Mr. Michael M. & Susannah Woods and was of a family of 11 children as follows: By first wife.
