Obituary

Mrs. M.E. Thompson, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alf Kissinger, of near Swedeborg, Mo., January 21, 1917, of Bright's Disease; age 69 years, 10 months and 12 days. She was the mother of 7 children, 4 girls and 3 boys, as follows: Mrs. Florence Flood, St. louis, Mo., Mrs. Alf Kissinger Swedeborg, Mo., Mrs. Flora Calvery, Paducah, Ky., Mrs. Maggie Smith, St. Anthony, Idaho; John Thompson, Ft. Smith, Ark., D.W. Thompson, Detroit, Mich., Sam Thompson, West Tulas, Okla.

She was a member of the Christian church at Swedeborg for 23 years, and led a true Christian life. Funeral services were conducted from the home, after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest in St. John's Cemetery, 2 miles west of Swedeborg, to await the Resurection mor. ---Her children.

Theodore Edgar Strom d. 25 April 1917

Boy Accidentally Killed

Theodore Edgar, the little 8 year old son of Theodore Strom living between here and Swedeborg, was killed by a horse about 7 o'clock Wednesday morning. The child was riding one of the horses to the field as they went to work and Mr. Strom was leading the horse when the animal became frightened and gave a sudden jump, jerking loose from Mr. Strom and ran away. The child was thrown from the horse but his feet caught in the harness and was drug 'till the horse had exhausted himself. The child was horribly bruised and dead when rescued. The little body was tenderly laid away in the St. John cemetery yesterday. The sympathy of the many friends of the family goes out to them in the ordeal of this terrible accident. -Richland Mirror

John Martin Johnson 1848-1910

The great and merciful master has again visited us and taken from our midst our dear father.

John Martin Johnson  was born in Kungshacka, Sweden, Sept. 8th, 1848, and died at Porcupine, Montana, May 21st, 1910, aged 61 years, 8 months, and 13 days. His remains were taken back to our old home at Swedeborg, Mo., where they were laid to est in St. John's cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bell at the Swedish Lutheran church at Swedeborg, of which he had long been a member. He had been a resident of Missouri for over twenty years, but on account of failing health, came here in April last, to see if he could regain his health by a change of climate, but to no avail. He passed away quietly to his long rest, where he shall suffer no more. His family watched faithfully by his bedside until the end came, which was no surprise to us, as we could see him gradually growing weaker from day to day.

He leaves a wife, one son, and one daughter residing at Porcupine, Mont., besides one brother and four sisters residing in Sweden, and quite a number of friends to mourn his loss. It was hard to part with him, but it was the Lord's will and we must all submit to that, for he doeth all things well.

Ora May (Kissinger) Olander 1897-1981

Ora M. Olander, daughter of Frank and Laura Roam Kissinger, was born October 15, 1897 in Swedeborg, Missouri and departed this life January 19, 1981 in the Autumn Manor Rest Home, No. 2, in Yates Center, Kansas.

Ora was married to Ernest Olander on November 3, 1912.  She was a dedicated wife for forty-three years, and a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend, who will be greatly missed.

Funeral services for Ora M. Olander were held at the Colonial Funeral Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 1981 with the Rev. Floyd Barlow officiating.  Burial was in St. Johns Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapels.

Pallbearers were: Clifford York, Hager Roam, Luther Ledbetter, Leonard Miller, Cleve Roam and Berlin Kissinger.

She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter, Anna Jane Smith of Kansas City, Kansas; one sister, Anna Johnson of Springfield, Missouri; her son-in-law and one grandson.

John Leland Zeigenbein 1930-2011

John Leland Zeigenbein, the eldest of seven children born to the union of the late Della (Fuller) and John Zeigenbein, was born March 30, 1930 in Waynesville, Missouri.

He departed this life January 29, 2011, at Richland Care Center, Richland, Missouri, at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 30 days.

Leland leaves to cherish his memory, four children: Jeffry Zeigenbein and wife, Linda of Richland, Johnny R. Zeigenbein and wife, JaNell of Phillipsburg, Lowell Zeigenbein and wife, Christina of Richland and Cynthia Begley and husband, Kile of Stoutland; four brothers: Alfred Zeigenbein and wife, Dorothy and Lloyd Zeigenbein and wife, Veda of Richland, Charlie Zeigenbein and wife, Claudette of Brumley and Claude Zeigenbein of Waynesville; eight grandchildren: Tonya Foster, Jonie Wilson, Laci Hansard, Leslie Coryell, Julie McCray, Casey Zeigenbein, Levi and Lucas Begley; great grandchildren: Ashton Hunter Coryell, Harper and Elliot Hansard, Andi Jo Wilson, Adalyn Coryell and twins on the way; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Leland was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth M. Peterson; his brother, Donald Wayne Zeigenbein and his sister, Lucene Holloway.

Leland grew up and attended school in the Shockley bottom area of Pulaski County.

On December 24, 1948, in Richland, Missouri, Leland was united in marriage with Ruth M. Peterson.

Leland spent much of his life in a truck hauling merchandise and livestock. He owned a fleet of trucks, and kept several drivers on the road. He enjoyed working on his farm near Stoutland.

Leland accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior on April 13, 1952 at the Richland Methodist Church. He was baptized by Rev. W.A. Wilson. It is a great comfort to know that Leland is walking the streets of gold with his Lord and his loved ones.

Funeral services were held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2011 in the Memorial Chapel of Richland with Rev. Christopher S. Hendrix, Sr. officiating. Linda Zeigenbein, Leland’s daughter-in-law, and Gilbert Crismon recalled their wonderful memories of Leland. Pianist Becky Lercher accompanied Gilbert Crismon as he sang “Til the Storm Passes By” and “Room at the Cross”. Serving as escorts were Jeffry, Johnny, and Lowell Zeigenbein, Cynthia, Levi and Lucas Begley.

Burial followed in the St. John’s Swede Cemetery of Richland. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapel of Richland.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Leland Zeigenbein to the St. John’s Swede Cemetery Fund and may be left at the funeral home.

Ora Myrtle (Croley) Martinson 1882-1984

Ora Myrtle Martinson, daughter of Christopher Allen and Mary Jane March Croley, was born in Scotland County on February 5, 1882, and passed away after a lengthy illness on April 4, 1984 at the age of 102 years, one month, and 30 days.

She became a Christian at an early age, and has been a member of United Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years and was faithful to her church as long as her health permitted.

At age seven, she moved with her family to a farm near Hawkeye.

She was united in marriage to John W. Martinson February 11, 1903 and to this union was born one daughter.

After their marriage, she and her husband moved to the Martinson farm where they lived all their married life. In 1958, about a year after the death of her daughter and husband, Myrtle moved to Richland where she has lived since.

She was an active member of Pulaski County Hospital Auxiliary for many years, and in recent years, all meetings were held in her home. She was also an active member of Ladies Aid of united Methodist Church and was one of a group of ladies who made quilts for newlyweds. Another organization she enjoyed was Women’s Progressive Farmer’s Association.

Those preceding her in death were her parents, husband, daughter: Lois; seven sisters: Nettie Vice, Emma Russell, Lena Croley, Bertha Russell, Huldah Elder, Fannie Phillips, and Alpha Haus; and one brother: Charles Croley.

Survivors include one sister: Gladys Baker of St. Louis, Missouri, three nieces; one nephew; other relatives and a host of friends.

Services were held Friday, April 6, 1984, 2:00 p.m. at the Colonial Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Appling officiating.

Music was provided by Rusty Shadel, soloist and Marcia Shadel, organist.

Escorts were: terry Chance, John Strom, Baker Wilson, Jr., Norman Strom, Cleve Roam, and Joe Moore.

Burial was in Swede Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapel.

Beulah Henson Lundh 1925-1984

Beulah Henson Lundh was born in Richland, Missouri October 3, 1925, to Mack and Jessie Fenton Henson, and passed away February 29, 1984 in Springfield, Missouri following a lingering illness. At the time of her passing, she had attained the age of 58 years, 4 months and 26 days.

She accepted Christ as her personal saviour at a very early age at the First Baptist Church of Richland where she was a member at the time of her death.

August 16, 1941 she was united in marriage to John C. Lundh, and to this union was born 1 son.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Bobby Don, and an infant sister, Rosalyn.

Survivors are her husband John C. of the home; parents Mack and Jessie Henson, Richland, Missouri; 1 son, Don, brother, Kenneth Henson, Richland; 1 sister, Pauline McDonald, Kansas City, Missouri; 3 grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.

Services for Beulah Lundh were held at Colonial Funeral Chapel 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 2, 1984. Officiating at the services was Pryor Ray Prewett. Music was provided by Dwight Roam, Soloist; and Marcia Shadel, Organist. Burial was in the Swede Cemetery.

Escorts was Tennis Ogle, Frank Perry, Billy Henson, Raymond Powers, Drue Rayl and Wayne Henson. Under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapels of Richland, Missouri.

Gust Edwin Peterson 1894-1985

Gust Edwin Peterson, son of Gustavus Walfrid Peterson and Anna Marie Larson Peterson, was born January 31, 1894, near Swedeborg, Missouri; died January 6, 1985 at Tri-County Nursing Home, Richland, Missouri, at the age of 90 years, 11 months, 6 days.

The greater part of his life was lived in Pulaski County, Missouri, except for World War I tour of duty in France, where he proudly served his country in the infantry, was wounded in action and honorably discharged at war’s end.

On February 18, 1920, he was united in marriage to Bertha Payne. To this union two sons were born, Carl Edwin and Ralph Jerry Peterson of Waynesville, Missouri; two daughters, Anna Marie Beckman of St. Peters, Missouri, and Ruth Merlyne Zeigenbein of Richland, Missouri. All survive.

Edwin devoted his life to his cherished wife, children, grandchildren; stewardship of the land, and improvement of community. In his productive years he was active in the American legion. He served 25 years on RI and Laquey School Boards. He helped organize the Missouri Farmer’s Association in Richland, was a member of the board for 28 years. He worked several years with the ASC office at Waynesville, was treasurer of the 177 phone line, and worked for improvement of service and equipment. He was greatly concerned with conservation and soil erosion. He practiced farming methods far ahead of his time.

He dedicated his life to God as a young man. In 1950 he became a member of the First Christian Church at Richland, where he remained a member until his death.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, three sisters, Ethel Peterson, Edna McCann, Hulda Kissinger; one half brother, Helmer Forslund; one great grandchild.

Edwin and Bertha have made their home at Tri-County Nursing Home for over five years. He is survived by his dear wife, two sons, two daughters, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one sister, Emma Roam of Crocker, Missouri.

Funeral services were held from the First Christian Church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 1985 with John Davenport, minister officiating. Music was provided by Rusty Shadel, soloist and Mary Lou Blanchard, organist. Interment was in the Swede Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harvey Lynn Dye, Roy Peterson, Morris Roam, Gary Carmack and Jeff Zeigenbein.

Honorary escorts were Buster Sanders, Charles Tharpe, Clarence Crismon, George Bacon, Keith Lundh and Drue Rayl.

Services were conducted by the Colonial Funeral Chapels.

St. John Swede Cemetery is located in Pulaski County, MO., near the village of Swedeborg. Highway 133 to Highway BB.

Tombstone Inscriptions of Pulaski County reports that St. John Swede Cemetery is located on land donated by John Strom and that the first burial was Matthew Anderson who died in 1878. John Strom was buried here after his death in 1904. Touring Swedish America writes that this cemetery “holds many gravestones with Swedish names.”. There are many stones that indicate that the one buried beneath was born in Sweden. Some of those names are: Hans Ekstrom, Kjarste Ekstrom, Unknown Erickson, Carl J. Lundstrom, Alfred Peterson, Fred Nordberg, and Albertina Fischer. Albertina’s husband, Joseph Fischer was born in France. Records of burials in St. John Swede Cemetery have been kept.

Linda Gail (Head) Sears 1942-2007

Linda Gail (Head) Sears departed this life November 6, 2007 at her home near Richland, Missouri, at the age of 65 years, 3 months and 13 days.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 9, 2007 at Richland United Methodist Church, Richland, Missouri with the Rev. Ralph Hosman officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Swede Cemetery, Swedeborg, Missouri.
Linda Gail Sears, daughter of the late James Gardner and Marie (Calvert) Head, was born May 21, 1942 in Columbia, Missouri. Linda grew up in Columbia where she graduated from Hickman High School in 1960.
On August 31, 1963, she married Farrell Eudell "Skip" Sears. Linda and Skip were blessed with two children, Julie and Daniel, and shared over 44 years together.
Soon Linda and Skip moved to the Chicago, Illinois area where she worked in the Sears Tower as a bookkeeper for the HOMART Corporation, a commercial development company. She later went to work in the Chicago suburbs District 98 School as a bookkeeper. In 1993, Linda and Skip moved to the Richland area, where she joined the Richland United Methodist Church.
In her spare time, Linda enjoyed being outdoors; whether is was camping or 4-wheeling. She loved spending time with her grandkids and treasured the times that she could spend with them and her family and friends.
Linda will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by her husband; Farrell E. "Skip" Sears; two children: Julie (Glenn) Stotler of Laquey, Missouri and Danile (Jill) Sears of Oregon, Wisconsin; three siblings: Carolyn (Purn) Webb of Paducah, Kentucky, and Sandra (Bill) Montgomery and Tom Mary Kay) Head all of Columbia, Missouri; six grandchildren: James, Megan, Stephanie, Amy, Daniel and Hannah; two great grandchildren: Erin and Bryn; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
