Alice Johnson Dead

Alice Johnson, the 12 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Johnson of our city, died last Saturday evening after a long, painful illness. For over a year little Alice had been a patient sufferer from an incurable disease and while her loss falls heavy on the doting parents, and loving brothers and sisters, her death was to her a release from pain and suffering. Little Alice was a sweet and loving child, loved by her playmates and all who knew her and her place with the little ones, as with her family, can never be filled.

Her sweet life has been plucked as a half blown rose by the hand of God to bloom for him in Heaven. The bereft family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction and should be encouraged by the thought that their little darling is only waiting for them in the home beyond.

John Martin Johnson 1848-1910

The great and merciful master has again visited us and taken from our midst our dear father.

John Martin Johnson  was born in Kungshacka, Sweden, Sept. 8th, 1848, and died at Porcupine, Montana, May 21st, 1910, aged 61 years, 8 months, and 13 days. His remains were taken back to our old home at Swedeborg, Mo., where they were laid to est in St. John's cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bell at the Swedish Lutheran church at Swedeborg, of which he had long been a member. He had been a resident of Missouri for over twenty years, but on account of failing health, came here in April last, to see if he could regain his health by a change of climate, but to no avail. He passed away quietly to his long rest, where he shall suffer no more. His family watched faithfully by his bedside until the end came, which was no surprise to us, as we could see him gradually growing weaker from day to day.

He leaves a wife, one son, and one daughter residing at Porcupine, Mont., besides one brother and four sisters residing in Sweden, and quite a number of friends to mourn his loss. It was hard to part with him, but it was the Lord's will and we must all submit to that, for he doeth all things well.

Albert Lee Nickels 1912-1986

Albert Lee Nickels, son of Ernest and Eliza Johnson Nickels, was born in Pulaski County om March 25, 1912, and departed this life January 18, 1986 at his home in Waynesville, Missouri at the age of seventy-three years.

On July 23, 1936 he was united in marriage with Edna Coogan, and to this union was born five sons, all surviving.

Lee has been a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church at Big Piney, Missouri for many years.  He drove and managed the Williams Bus Lines for a total of twenty five years, and has made Pulaski County his home all of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Edna of the home; five sons, Jack of Waynesville, Donald of Warrensburg, Missouri, Ronald of Dugway, Utah, Michael of Nebo, Missouri, and Marvin of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; two brothers, Wilbur Nickels of Richland, Dr. Harvey Nickels of Waynesville; and one sister, Thelma Fisher of Richland; ten grandchildren, and six great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

Those preceding him in death include his parents, three brothers, Charles, James, and Roy, one sister, Irene Berger and an infant sister.

Joseph Avery Bassett 1918-1986

Joseph Avery Bassett of Dixon, was born on October 16, 1918, in Pulaski County, a son of Elmer Raymond and Cora Ellen Johnson Bassett, and departed this life at 12:35 a.m. on Saturday morning, May 17, 1986 in the Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, after undergoing open heart surgery on Friday.  He had been in failing health for the past eight years and had attained the age of 67 years, 7 months and 1 day.

He was united in marriage on September 19, 1940 at Dixon to the former Miss Erma Collier, and to this union four children were born.

He had been employed for twenty-three years by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service at Fort Leonard Wood, and at the time of his retirement on Jan. 1, 1976, he was a service station assistant manager.  He was a member of the Pisgah Baptist Church near Dixon, having accepted Jesus Christ as his personal saviour and following his lord in baptism in 1939.  He was ordained a deacon in the church on August 25, 1948, and also had served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher for many years.

A loving husband, dad, grandpa, brother and friend, he will indeed be sadly missed by his family and all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon, May 19, 1986, in the Dixon Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes with the Rev. Steven M. Lynch, Pastor, Pisgah Baptist Church, Dixon and the Rev. Frank Burger, Pastor, First Baptist Church, Hermitage, officiating.

Interment was in the Dixon Cemetery under the direction of the Dixon Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes.

Active pallbearers were Roy Bassett, Douglas Martin, Dave Roop, Kent Bassett, Mike Eutsler and Ralph Bonofiglio and honorary pallbearers were Alva Manes, Claude Carrell, Doral Cardin and Ralph Manes who were members of Mr. Bassett’s Sunday School Class.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pisgah Baptist Church near Dixon with envelopes being available at the Dixon Office of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes.

He was preceded in death by his father on April 3, 1953; his mother on August 1, 1955; three brothers, Arthur Bassett on May 12, 1967, Clarence Bassett on December 21, 1985, and Clyde Bassett on May 19, 1978; and one sister, Mrs. Nola Nelson on May 14, 1954.

Harvey Ernest Nickels Jr. 1923-1986

Harvey Ernest Nickels Jr., son of Harvey E. Nickels Sr. and Eliza Johnson Nickels, was born in Pulaski County on May 24,1923, and departed this life March 19, 1986 in Columbia, Missouri.

Dr. Nickels attended Waynesville Schools and graduated in 1941.  He was united in marriage with Wanda Lea Ferguson on August 10, 1941, and to this union was born three sons, all surviving.  Dr. Nickels was united in marriage with Iris Cohn on May 15, 1971.  In March of 1979 he was married to Rita Black.

He was a member of the American Academy of Osteopathic Surgeons, of Wanesville Masonic Lodge, the Fort Leonard Wood - Pulaski County Shrine Club and a member of several local saddle clubs.

In 1942 he entered the United States Air Force, and served his country during World War II, where he was a tail gunner, stationed in Italy.  He was injured in a plane crash in 1945 and soon returned to the states.  He then owned and operated the Laquey store and managed the Laquey Post Office for a number of years, until medical school became his real desire.

Attending Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, he graduated in 1954, and served his residency in Carl Junction from September of 1954 until March of 1955.  Dr. Nickels then returned to Pulaski County where he has practiced medicine ever since.  He was instrumental in providing Pulaski County with good medical care and by his continued support and hard work also provided Pulaski County with an excellent medical facility, Pulaski County Memorial Hospital.

Those surviving include his wife Rita of Waynesville; three sons, Gary Nickels of Waynesville, Darrell Nickels of Waynesville, and Dr. Terry Nickels of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one step son, Dr. Joey Cohn of Springfield; one step daughter Chrisy Cohn of Springfield; one brother Wilbur Nickels of Richland; one sister Thelma Fisher of Richland; seven grandchildren and many other relatives and a host of many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Iris, two brothers, James and Lee and two infant brothers, and one sister Irene Berger.

Susie Mabel (Johnson) Williams 1897-1981

Susie Mabel Williams, daughter of Wesley and Betty Brickey Johnson was born February 16, 1897 in Camden County and departed this life January 18, 1981 at her home in Richland, Missouri. In September of 1939 she was united in marriage to Jack Williams. She has lived in Richland most of her life. Funeral services were held January 20, 1981 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dale Hufft officiating. Burial was in the Johnson Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapels. Survivors include two brothers, Lee Johnson, of Belle, Missouri; Ransy Johnson of Sacramento, California; and one sister, Mrs. Norma Hancock of Richland, Missouri. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sisters, Myrtle and Lottie.

Ray Dwight Johnson 1956-1981

Ray Dwight Johnson, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, formerly of Dixon and Eldon, was born on December 27, 1956, at Granite City, Illinois, a son of Harley Glen and Erma Jean Howser Johnson, and departed this life on Monday evening, June 1, 1981, near Muskogee, Oklahoma, as a result of accidental drowning.  Ray had attainted the age of 24 years, 5 months, and 4 days.

Ray was united in marriage on July 27, 1980, at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to the former Miss Linda Harjo, and to this union, one daughter was born.  Prior to his death, Ray had been employed as a construction worker for the past four years.

Those left to mourn the passing of Ray include: His wife, Mrs. Linda Johnson, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one daughter, Miss Cora Johnson, of the home; his parents, Harley and Erma Johnson, Route 3, Dixon; one brother, William B. Johnson, Route 1, Dixon; three sisters, Mrs. Glenna Bilyeu and Mrs. Julia Anderson, both of Hayden Route, Dixon, and Miss Cynthia Johnson, Route 3, Dixon; his maternal grandparents, Basil and Lola Howser,

William Eugene "Bill" Johnson 1938-2011

William Eugene “Bill” Johnson, was born January 17, 1938 to Reba and Ewell Johnson. Our mother always called him “Special.” She used that word to explain he was learning impaired. However, to all who had the pleasure of meeting Bill, “special” clearly spoke to the loving, kind and caring person that he was.

Bill worked on the farm taking care of the livestock, feeding chickens, milking the cow, driving the tractor, etc until he had heart surgery in 1982. After that time, he happily told everyone he was “retired.”

He is survived by three siblings: David (Pam) Johnson, John (Carol) Johnson and Suzie (Charlie) Everingham; three nephews: Matt, Ian and Travis (Sarah) Johnson; four nieces: Laura (Ed) Hurley, Tara, Kasey and Julie Schneider; two great nephews: Walter and Carl Hurley; one aunt: Juanita (Jack) Alden; cousins: Mary Etta (Joe) Heggie and Robert (Barbara) Johnson; a host of second cousins, other relatives and friends.

Bill and our mother’s heart beats together – we never knew which would go first, but expected the other to go quickly after. Our mother died February 19, 2008 – Bill joined our mother on June 26, 2011.

We, as a family, greatly grieve the loss of such a kind soul whose child-like mannerisms brought great joy to all of us. We are all better people because of the influence of Bill.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011 in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.

Our family was blessed by Richland Care Center where both Bill and mom lived together for a while. We request donations to go to Richland Care Center in lieu of flowers.

Reba Chloe (Gorrell) Johnson 1916-2008

Reba Chloe (Gorrell) Johnson, daughter of the late Cliff and Gladys Gorrell, was born February 21, 1916 in Crocker, Missouri. Her father worked in the lumber and produce business and her mother was a seamstress. She was the youngest of the family with an older brother LeRoy and sister Millie.

At the age of 18, Reba met Ewell Johnson, also known as Bearcat, at a ball game in 1934 between Crocker and Waynesville. Ewell told Reba he was 20. However, she soon discovered that he was actually only one day older than she. On Ewells birthday, February 20, 1937, they eloped, with parental approval, and were married in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. They were blessed with four children: Bill, David, John and Suzie. Ewell preceded her in death in December of 1975.

Reba lived for her family and friends. She delighted in big family gatherings, holidays with the house full of company, fishing and staying at the cabin, card games and coffee, and Sunday drives with impromptu visits to relatives and friends. She enjoyed her flowers, vegetable garden, feeding and watching birds, especially hummingbirds, sewing and making quilts. She figuratively and literally blanketed her friends and family with love. We are all better people by the gift of time we had with her.

Reba went home to be with her Lord at 4:05 P.M. Tuesday, February 19, 2008 in the Richland Care Center at the age of 91 years, 11 months and 29 days.

Reba leaves to cherish her memory her three sons: Bill Johnson of Waynesville, MO, David Johnson and his wife, Pam of Waynesville, MO and John Johnson and his wife, Carol of Richland, MO; one daughter: Suzie Everingham and her husband, Charlie of St. Louis, MO; one sister-in-law: Juanita Alden and her husband, Jack of Avon, CT; seven grandchildren: Matt and Ian Johnson, Laura Johnson Hurley and her husband Ed, Travis Johnson, Tara, Kasey and Julie Schneider; two great grandchildren: Walter and Carl Hurley; one niece: Mary Etta Johnson Heggie and her husband Joe; one nephew: Robert Johnson and his wife, Barb; three great nephews: Rob Heggie and his wife Jean, Joe B. Heggie and his wife Nanette and John Heggie and his wife Corinne; one great niece: Emily Johnson; one great-great niece and nephew: Claire and Baxter Heggie; and a host of friends.

Heaven is described in the Bible as having many mansions. We envision our family in humble homes where the kitchen is always open and the coffee is always brewing. Out back is a fishing cabin by a spring and within a stones throw of a river. Uncle Alfie, always the tinkerer, has already provided running water into the cabin via the spring. It is a loud boisterous group and many can be found late at night playing pitch and sharing stories. The sky is a night show of stars and arguments abound over which constellation they are looking at. Laughter rings out through the valleys, and love is poured into each cup of coffee. Mom, after her long journey here, is finally home.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 23, 2008 in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel with Rev. Richard Breeden officiating. Soloist Becky Lercher sang Amazing Grace, Softly and Tenderly and Precious Lord, Take My Hand. Serving as escorts were Matt Johnson, Ian Johnson, Travis Johnson, Joe Heggie, Rob Heggie, Mike Nickels, Joe Laughlin and Harold York. Serving as honorary escorts were Julia Johnson, Pauline Laughlin and Martha Burgess.

Burial followed in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

Daryl Alan Johnson 1985-2004

Daryl Alan Johnson, son of Todd and Susanne Johnson, was born November 15, 1985 in Bremen, Germany. Daryl and his family lived in the Waynesville/Laquey area off and on since 1986 and settled in the area in 1998 after his father retired from the military. He was very intelligent and started attending college courses at night while in high school. Daryl was proud to be furthering his education at a local college.

Daryl loved to be outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing or just riding his 4-wheeler. He was a very talented artist, liked playing the piano, and was very athletic. He lifted weights, was a swimmer and played baseball. He loved animals, especially his pet cat, Sammy and his friend's pet, Reilly. He was very loving and outgoing and enjoyed spending time with children, so much so that he frequently volunteered to work with children's programs including students with special needs. Most importantly, Daryl treasured the times that he could spend with his family, especially his nephews and other very close family friends and their children.

Daryl passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at the age of 18 years, 11 months and 4 days.

Daryl will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by his parents: Todd and Susanne Johnson of the home; paternal grandmother: Elaine Stoudt and her husband, Dennis of Springdale, AR; paternal grandfather: Leonard Johnson and his wife, Jane, of Rock Falls, IL; paternal great grandmother: Helen Johnson of Rock Falls, IL; maternal grandmother: Lydia Rauer of Bremen, Germany; one brother: Benjamin Johnson and his wife, Leann, of St. Robert, MO; two nephews: Damon and Christopher Johnson; and special family friends: Pete and Diane Diekmann, their daughters, Tami Harrigal and Traci Mathieu including grandchildren Michael and Madison Mathieu; several other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Heinz Rauer in June 1996.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 23, 2004 in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dwain Carter and Rev. Bill Turner officiating. Family friend, Diane Diekmann, read a meaningful poem that she had written for the family. Pianist Dawn Keenan, Daryl's aunt, played beautiful prelude music and sang "Amazing Grace". Soloist Mark Meyers sang "I Can Only Imagine". Serving as escorts were Pete Diekmann, Ray Ehret, Kevin Hess, Earl Jackson, Manuel Myers and Will Turner. Serving as honorary escort was Daryl's brother, Benjamin Johnson.

Burial followed in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

Marion Elizabeth (Reed) Hauck 1932-2005

Marion Elizabeth Hauck, one of two children born to the union of the late Arnold and Helen (Johnson) Reed, was born July 30, 1932 at Jefferson, Pennsylvania in Washington County, where she grew up and graduated from high school.

On August 4, 1949 in Russell, Kentucky, Marion was united in marriage with Ralph W. Hauck, Sr., and to this union, two sons, Ralph and Bobby, and two daughters, Shirley and Patricia, were born.

Since Ralph was a career Army soldier, the Hauck family lived in many areas of the country. Upon Ralph's retirement, he and Marion settled in the Roby, Missouri area where they lived for 14 years. Marion worked at the Fort Leonard Wood Post Exchange and later at the St. Robert Wal-Mart. When Ralph passed away in 1985, Marion moved to St. Robert where she made her home until 2004 when her health failed and she moved to the Willow Creek Nursing Center in Belleville, Illinois.

Marion departed this life the morning of September 3, 2005 at the Belleville Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Illinois, at the age of 73 years, 1 month and 3 days.

She leaves to cherish her memory, three children: Ralph Hauck and Shirley New both of Belleville, Illinois and Patricia Reagin of Dallas, Texas; 6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and several other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Marion was also preceded in death by her son, Bobby and one brother.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 7, 2005 in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel with Rev. Richard Breeden officiating. The songs "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art" were played. Serving as escorts were Ralph Hauck, Jr., Steve New, Joe Reagin, Ryan Reagin, Tommy Utman and Rob Workman.

Burial followed in the Palace Union Cemetery of Evening Shade, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.

Elizabeth Elaine (Johnson) Mazza 1949-2009

Elizabeth Elaine Mazza, daughter of the late Lloyd and Susie Johnson, was born January 28, 1949 in Sanford, North Carolina. As a young girl, Elaine and her family moved to the Virginia Beach, Virginia area where she graduated from Princess Anne High School.


On June 17, 1986 in Arlington, Virginia, Elaine was united in marriage to Harold Mazza. They shared over 22 years of marriage together and five children: William, Daniel, Derren, Debra and Donna.


Elaine and Harold moved to the Waynesville / St. Robert, Missouri area and she became employed at the US Army Engineer School on Fort Leonard Wood as a secretary. She was employed there for 18 years.


In her spare time, Elaine enjoyed working out in her yard. She was constantly planting and moving flowers, trying to make her yard as beautiful as possible. She was also a pet-lover. She would care and nurture for any animal, especially dogs.


Elaine was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of St. Robert. She was also a very active member in the Relief Society with the church.


Elaine passed away at 5:43 A.M. Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center of Rolla, Missouri at the age of 60 years.


Elaine leaves to cherish her memory her husband: Harold Mazza of the home; three sons: William Whitehurst of Newport News, VA, Daniel Whitehurst of the Bahamas and Derren Mazza of the state of Michigan; two daughters: Debera Boyer and Donna Bird both of Milton, PA; two brothers: Harold Johnson of the state of Florida and Darrell Johnson of the state of North Carolina; 17 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter; several other relatives and friends.


In addition to her parents, Elaine was preceded in death by one brother, Ron Johnson.


Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 31, 2009 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of St. Robert, Missouri with Bishop Herman Blau officiating. Sharing their wonderful memories of Elaine were her husband, son, daughter-in-law and William Oberholtzer. The songs I Believe in Christ and Families Can Be Together Forever were sung by the congregation. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory.

JAMES LEE JOHNSON, 1901-1990

James Lee Johnson passed away at the home of a granddaughter in Olathe KS on September 5, 1990.

He was born in Stoutland February 5, 1901, to Charles Lee Johnson and Maggie D. Johnson. After his father's death, he, his mother and his sister moved to Hazelgreen and he remained in that area his entire life.

He was married to Lola Mae Drennan of that same community on February 11, 1922. They had two sons, Bobby Lee, who died in infancy, and James Richard, who died in May of 1983; and two surviving daughters, Bonnie Dickinson of Kansas City and Donna Lee Krutsinger of Joplin.

Johnson was a member of the Independence Baptist church, and also served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, song leader and Men's Sunday School teacher.

He worked as a barber in Richland for almost fifty years, and finished up with five years of barbering in Waynesville.

An avid fox hunter and breeder of Walker hounds, he spent many hours hunting, raising hounds and judging at state and national meets and field trials.

Other than his father and two sons, he is preceded in deaath by his mother, one sister, and his wife Lola.

He is survived by his two daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Independence Baptist Church September 8.

MARGARET P. JOHNSON, 1926-1990

Funeral services for Margaret P. Johnson, 64, of Waynesville, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 6, in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson, a Waynesville school bus driver, died at 11:26 a.m. Wednesday in the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital, Fort Leonard Wood.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors include her husband, Bill, of the home; one son, William Henry Johnson of Jefferson City; two daughters, Mary Katherine Morgan of Jefferson City and Madonna Sue Butler of Bourbon; three brothers, Christopher Jann of Indianapolis IN, Bernard Jann of Wilingsborrow, NJ, and Leonard Jann of Springfield IL; and five grandchildren.

A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association in memory of Margaret Johnson.

Albert Eugene Johnson 1916-1985

Albert Eugene Johnson was born a son to Albert Elhannon and Mary (Boatwright) Johnson on August 25, 1916 in Whitener, Arkansas and he departed this life on Saturday afternoon, June 8, 1985 at the General Wood Army Community Hospital at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri having attained the age of 68 years, 9 months, and 13 days.

On June 9, 1959, Albert was married to Mildred “Elaine” Simmons in Furth, Germany. Albert and Elaine spent 26 years together.

Albert served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1963, seeing action in World War II in Europe.

Albert worked for the Army Air Force Exchange Services at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, moving later to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri where he retired from AAFES.

Albert loved the Lord and visited often with Rev. Gene Partin from the Maranatha Baptist Church.

Albert enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid sports fan. He was a member of the American Legion and a member of the Masons, having attained the Degree of Master Mason on April 26, 1949.

Albert will be sadly missed by his many friends and relatives including his wife, Elaine of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Shipley of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Mrs. Irene Pitss of Brea, California; one brother, Clyde Johnson of the state of California and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 11, 1985 at 2:30 p.m. in the Waynesville Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gene Partin officiating.

Music was provided by organist Marjorie Link.

Military personnel served as escorts.

Burial with full Military Honors was in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Waynesville Memorial Funeral Chapel. Masonic services were held Tuesday evening, June 10, 1985 at 7:30 p.m. in the Waynesville Memorial Funeral Chapel with Worshipful Master Marty Humphreys conducting.

Lola Mae Drennan Johnson 1894-1985

Lola Mae Drennan Johnson was born June 21, 1894 in the Hazelgreen Community to Ellen and Jothan Drennan. She was one of six children, five daughters and one son. She passed away April 16, 1985 at her home near Richland, Missouri.

On January 11, 1922 she was married to James Lee Johnson of the Hazelgreen community. They were married 63 years and their home has always been around the hazel green or Richland area.

Dick and Lola had four children, two of them preceding her in death. They were Robert Lee, who died in infancy and James Richard, who passed away in May of 1983. She is survived by her loving husband, Dick of the home; a daughter, Bonnie Dickinson of Overland Park, Kansas, and Donna Krutsinger of Joplin, Missouri; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; sister, Clara Gibson of Richland, Missouri; several nieces, nephews and cousins, who were very dear to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Ollie Gallion, Della Harper, Effie Alice Drennan; brother Lilburn Drennan, and grandson, Craig Krutsinger.

Lola’s life was centered in God, her family, and her church. She was a quiet and gentle lady with a strong belief in God. She was a tower of strength to her family, always steady, always the same, with a patient and positive attitude toward life.

Lola loved children and for years helped with Vacation Bible School and taught the Beginners Sunday School Class. She had been the Sunday School secretary of Independence Baptist Church for the last 30 years.

Lola was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and her family will never be the same without her. Their loss is Heaven’s gain.

Funeral services were held from the Independence Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 19, 1985 with Rev. Raymond McClary and Rev. Rainey Fann officiating.

Burial was in the Hazelgreen Cemetery under the direction of the Colonial Funeral Chapel.

The music was by Rusty Shadel, soloist and DeLores Shadel, organist.

Escorts were Earl Powers, Fred Wilson, Jesse Elam, Kenneth Fike, Ralph Posten, and Harry Bryant.

Grace LaMoine (Rollins)Howlett 1894-1984

Grace LaMoine Howlett, daughter of John and Willie Ann Johnson Rollins, was born in Pulaski County on December 20, 1894 and departed this life December 30, 1984 in Richland, Missouri, at the age of 90 years and 10 days.

Grace was united in marriage with Reed Howlett November 18, 1916 and to this union was born four sons and two daughters, all surviving.

She made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ at the age of 11 and was baptized and attended church at the Prospect School. Later she moved her membership to the Fairview Church where she was a member for many years. At the time of her death Grace was a member of Berean Baptist Church. She was active in her church and her community and was a lovely Christian lady who was devoted to her family.

Those surviving are her husband Reed of the home; four sons, Rollins, Dale, and Kenneth, all of Richland, and Keith of Montreal; two daughters Willie Ann Quesenberry and Gussie Black, both of Richland; one brother, Sterling Rollins, of the State of Maryland; two sisters, Stella Pearson and Eula Burchard, both of Waynesville; 23 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson; also other relatives and friends.

Grace is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Jim, Tom, and John Rollins, one granddaughter, Connie Sue Quesenberry, two great granddaughters, Susan and Sharon Keeney, and one great grandson, Larry Lloyd Gan.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 1985 from the Colonial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Raymond McClary, Rev. Larry Burke and Rev. Ed Hamilton officiating. Music was by Gilbert Crismon, soloist and DeLores Shadel, organist. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery. Escorts were her grandsons.

Donald Dean Ryder 1926-1983

Donald Dean Ryder was born in Decatur, Illinois, on July 10, 1926 the son of John Henry and Viola (Johnson) Ryder Sr. and departed this life on December 15, 1983 at his home in Fenton, Missouri after attaining the age of 57 years, 5 months, and 5 days.

On April 21, 1961 Donald was united in marriage to Betty Greer and to this union one daughter was born. Donald served his country faithfully, having over 20 years in the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife Betty of the home; one daughter Dee Ann of St. Robert, Missouri; six sisters, Alice Riley of Bement, Illinois, Moe Whobrey of Hammond, Illinois, Maxine Auton of Hammond, Illinois, Marion Fosknight of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, Betty Walker of Carlinville, Illinois, and Emma Flanigann of Mobile Park, Illinois; four brothers, John Jr. of Lawrenceburg, Tennesse, Herbert of Eldora, Illinois, Howard of Jacksonville, Florida, and Jim of Evansville, Indiana; his mother-in-law Sylvia Greer of St. Robert, Missouri; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Donald had accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized into the Baptist Church. He was a loving husband and father and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, December 19, 1983 at 1:00 p.m. at the Long Moss Williams Chapel with Richard Breeden officiating.

Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery of Crocker under the direction of the Long Moss Williams Funeral Home, Waynesville, Missouri. Military honors at graveside. Pallbearers were friends and members of the family.

Carl Louis Johnson 1907-1984

Carl Louis Johnson was born in Swedeborg, Missouri on June 26, 1907 the son of Carl Frederick and Effie Lee Hammock Johnson and passed away in the Lake of the Ozarks Hospital in Osage Beach, Missouri on August 22, 1984. He had attained the age of 77 years.

Carl is survived by his two sons, Robert and Carl Jr. of Richland, one grandson Gerald Robert Johnson of Richland and his wife Ann of the home with other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Edith Mae Roam.

Funeral services were held in the Long Moss Williams Chapel on Friday, August 24, 1984 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Wahl officiating.

Burial was in the Crocker Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Long Moss Williams Chapel of Crocker.

Pallbearers were: Lowell Jacobson, Danny and Terry Roam, Albert Larson, Cyrus Smelcer and John Hall.

Music was provided by Hazel Schierbaum, organist and Betty Layman, soloist.

Minnie O. (Perry) Johnson 1867-1967

WALTER JOHNSON’S MOTHER DIES AT 100

Olney, MD.- The mother of the late Walter (Big Train) Johnson, famed pitcher for the Washington Senators, is dead. Minnie O. (Perry) Johnson died Sunday in a nursing home. She was 100.

Born in Wayne County, Ind., Mrs. Johnson lived on farms in the Midwest and the family was operating one in Kansas when Walter went to Washington.

One of her favorite stories was how as a child she had taken care of the guns of Jesse and Frank James when the notorious robbers were lodged overnight at her farm home in Dixon, Missouri
