WAYNESVILLE- Funeral services for Danny Lee Roam, 16, Route 1, Waynesville, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the United Pentecostal Church here with the Rev. Cecil McCutcheon officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery near Swedeborg under direction of Moss-Williams of Waynesville.

The youth was shot about 6 p.m. Thursday in an accident which occurred while he and friends hunted for squirrels in the Gladden Park area on Mo. 17 eight miles west of Waynesville. The youth was rushed to the Pulaski County Hospital here where he died about 6:45 p.m.

Surviving are his parents, Leo Roam, Route 1, Waynesville, and Mrs. Norma Amacker, Devil’s Elbow; two sisters, Linda and Janet, both of the home; the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lena Fay Roam, St. Louis; and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Melvin Rogers, Lebanon.

Obituary

Our mother now from us is gone,
Her voice forever stilled.
A place is vacant in our home,
Which can never be filled.

Elizabeth York was born in Spencer county, Indiana, November 14th, 1838, and died at her home in Pulaski county, January 20, 1917, at the age of seventy-eight years, two months and six days. She was laid to rest in the cemetery one-fourth mile from her home by the side of her youngest son, Simeon. Funeral services were conducted by Jesse Brown.

She came from Indiana with her parents, Seth and Rebecca Manes, when she was only one year old, and settled in Pulaski county, near the present site of Richland, which at that time was merely a wilderness, inhabited by deer and howling wolves. She was married January 29th, 1860. She was the mother of nine children, four having proceeded her to the great beyond. Five are still living; Mary Setser and Rebecca McMahan, of Camden county, Parridine and Ella York, of Pulaski county, and Wm. C. York, of Springfield. She also leaves her husband, five brothers, two sisters, four half-brothers and two half-sisters and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her loss. She was honored by a long life and lived to have great grandchildren. She had been a member of the Baptist church about 41 years and has lived a true Christian life, always giving her children good advice. She was a kind mother and a devoted companion.

Sarah A. (Petty) Case 1857-1902

Died at her home near Hooker, October 4th 1902, Mrs. Sarah A. Case, wife of Robert M. Case.

Mrs. Case was born on Matthews Prairie, September 18th, 1857, and was married to Robert M. case October 16th, 1881. She was the mother of eight children, six of whom survive her, three boys and three girls. She was a loving wife and an affectionate mother and the chair she has left vacant can never be filled. She was a devoted christian, always cheerfully assisting in the advancement of the cause of christianity.

Her soul has passed into Heaven but she will long be remembered by friends as one whose heart was filled with love and hospitality towards her fellow creatures. Although for three long years she struggled with that "King of disease", consumption, still she bore it patiently and when the death Angel came she was not afraid to meet her God.

Merrel John Payne 1910-1986

Merrel John Payne, son of Lige and DeLitha Kissinger Payne, was born in Swedeborg, on November 16, 1910 and departed this life on July 20, 1986 in Springfield, Missouri at the age of seventy five years.

On March 4, 1939, Merrel was united in marriage with Bonnie Lundstrom, and to this union was born three sons, all surviving.

As a young man, he professed his faith in Jesus Christ, and became a member of the Swedeborg Christian Church, where he remained a member.

Merrel has farmed in the Pulaski County area most all his life.  He was a member of the Richland Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star, and for many years, served on the Swedeborg School Board and was Commissioner of the Special Road District.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 23, 1986 at 10:00 a.m. with Ministers John Davenport and Rev. Roger Marshall officiating, under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapel.

Resting place was in the Bethlehem Cemetery.

Escorts were: Gerald Payne, Ralph Peterson, Donald Witt, Carl Peterson, Lindell Roam, and Phillip York.

Honorary escorts were: Ralph Hightower, Jim Bill Goforth, Luke Brickey, Bud Witt, Charles P. Goforth and Ralph King.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie of the home; three sons, Merrel Lee and Kerry, both of Richalnd, Bryce of Eldorado Springs, Missouri; four sisters, Grace Manes of Swedeborg, Cora Harris of Ashland, Missouri, Bertha Peterson and Eula York, both of Richland; five grandchildren and one great granddaughter; other relatives and friends.

Merrel is preceded in death by his parents, one brother Earl, and two sisters, Ethel eckman and Carmel Roam.

Ruby Irene (Allen) Patton 1924-2003

Ruby Irene Patton, daughter of Thomas Elmer Allen and Nellie McElree Allen, was born July 23, 1924 in Hawkeye and departed this life July 23, 2003 at her home near Stoutland at the age of seventy-nine years. 

On November 21, 1942 she was united in marriage with Linvil Patton, and to this union was born five children.
At the time of her death, she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Richland. 

Ruby was employed with H.D. Lee for eighteen years before retiring. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and spending time with her family and friends. 

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Patton of the home; three sons, Larry Patton and wife Cheryl and Lloyd Patton, all of Stoutland, Tommy Patton and wife Susie of Lebanon; two brothers, Wayne Allen of Lone Jack, Tommy Allen of Richland; seven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Linvil Patton; one infant daughter, Sharon Kay Patton; and one brother, Lloyd Allen. 

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003 at Colonial Chapel, Richland, with Dr. Mike Hawkins officiating. Escorts were Andrew Douglas, Mark Patton, Derek Patton, Ashley Douglas, Adam Douglas, Tim Patton, Brent Brown and Amanda Patton. 

Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery under the direction of Thieme-Shadel-Hicks Funeral Service at Colonial Chapel.

Dwight Roam 1932-2006

Dwight Roam 74, of Camdenton, formally of Richland, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at St. John’s Hospital-Lebanon.

He was born June 12, 1932 in Richland to Frank William and Golda Marie Thornsberry Roam who preceded him in death.

On Dec. 24, 1958, he married Winona Hickman, who also preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Don Roam, and a grandson, Rick Schupe.

He was the co-owner of Roam Hardware Store in Richland and a member of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Camdenton.

He is survived by a step son, Jerry Schupe and his wife, Sherry, of Charleston, Ark.; a grandson, Craig Schupe, of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Alice Roam, of Richland; two nephews, Frank Roam and his wife, Carol, of Lebanon, and Kim Roam and his wife, Debbie, of Grain Valley; one niece, Sherry Struckhoff and her husband, Ken, of Richland; several great nieces and nephews; special friends Brian Miller and his wife, Beth, and their four children and other relatives and friends.

Services for Dwight Roam will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Richland with Dr. Mike Hawkins officiating.

Burial will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery under the direction of Thieme-Shadel Funeral Service at Colonial Chapel in Richland.

Visitation will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday to time of service.

Memorials may be made to the Richland First Baptist Church Scholarship Fund.

Martin L. Dittman 1939-2010

Martin Luther Dittman, of Crocker, was born on October 8, 1939, at Austin, Texas a son of Rudolph William and Lilly (Kuyus) Dittman and departed this life at 2:55 p.m., Friday, January 29, 2010, in the University Hospitals and Clinics, Columbia. Mr. Dittman had attained the age of 70 years, 3 months and 21 days.

Mr. Dittman was united in marriage in 1962 at Austin, Texas to Miss Flora Joyce Rice and to this union 8 children were born. His parents and one son, Danny Aaron Dittman in 2001, preceded him in death.

Mr. Dittman was a retired United States Army veteran, having served 21 years. Following his retirement he was a taxi cab driver for Post Cab at Fort Leonard Wood. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and watching television.>

Those left to mourn the passing of Mr. Dittman include: his wife, Joyce Dittman, Crocker; four sons and daughters-in-law, Martin L., Jr. and Vicki Dittman, state of Kentucky; James and Dena Dittman and Paul and Alma Lee Dittman, all of Crocker; Benjamin and Brandy Dittman, Springfield; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Debra Kay Hadley and her fiancé, Darrel Bissil, Crocker; Brenda and Rom Schultz, St. Louis; and Sabrina and Donald Schraft, Vienna; two brothers, David Clements and Billy Dittman; twenty-four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted for Mr. Dittman at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 3, 2010 in the Long-Kloeppel Funeral Chapel, Crocker with Chaplain Douglas Ochner, Fort Leonard Wood, officiating. Two favorite musical selections were played for the service.

Interment with full military honors was in the Bethlehem Cemetery, Swedeborg under the direction of the Long-Kloeppel Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Crocker. Pallbearers were United States Army personnel from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Madge Celesta (Godfrey) Manes 1902-1990

Madge Celesta Manes, daughter of George and Pearl Lea Jones Godfrey, was born August 21, 1902 in Richland, Missouri, and departed this life July 27, 1990, in Rolla, Missouri, at the age of eighty-seven years, eleven months, and six days.

She was united in marriage with George Larson and to this union one son and one daughter were born.

On July 11, 1936, she was united in marriage with Jim G. Manes, and to this union was born one son.

As a young girl, Madge professed her faith in Jesus Christ and joined the Swedeborg Baptist

She is survived by her son, Jimmy Manes, Richland, Missouri; her daughter, June Fishback, Lakewood, California; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, George Larson and Jim G. Manes, one son, Kenneth Larson, and one grandson.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, July 30, 1990 at the First Baptist Church of Swedeborg, with the Revs. Larry Atkins and Tim Baker officiating. She was laid to rest at Bethlehem Cemetery. Escorts were Lowell Jacobson, Hubert Larson, Robert

Lena Faye Roam 1900-1985

Lena Faye Roam was born August 26, 1900 in Pulaski County, Missouri and she departed this life on June 6, 1985 at the Waynesville Nursing Center in Waynesville, Missouri having attained the age of 84 years, 9 months, and 10 days.

Lena Faye Roam was a loving mother. Her goal in life was to see her family serve the Lord, a Lord that she has served since early childhood. In fact she left this message to her family to be read at the time of her death:

“Jesus has gone to prepare a mansion for those who love Him and do His will. This world is only a dressing place to get ready to go to that mansion. He has gone to prepare where we dwell with Him forever in that mansion bright and fair. So, dear ones, do not grieve for me. I have made myself ready to meet my Jesus over there. Get ready to meet me on that bright and happy shore where there will be no parting sorrow or pain, where we will be with Jesus forever more. So lay up your treasures in Heaven, not in this world of sorrow, pain and woe. You may own countless acres, a world’s estate. You may dwell in a costly and great palace, but the mansion in Glory will only be given to those whose treasures are laid up in Heaven.”

She also left this poem:

“Lost on the sea of life
Confused and torn within
I sought some ray of light
To guide me safely in.

For from the paths of men
Came the love and grace so bold
The Voice of the Nazarene
Bid me come and join His fold.

Tenderly remove the stain of sin
And made me every bit whole
Now with all that in me is
I give to Him my life and soul.”

Although she left this message and poem to her immediate family; her other relatives, friends, and neighbors know that she intends this for them too. We believe her final words to us would be “God bless you all.”.

Lena Faye Roam is survived by five sons: Guy, Charles, and David of St. Louis, Missouri; Fred of St. Charles, Missouri; and Leo pf Waynesville, Missouri; two daughters: Violet Fritts of Eureka, Missouri and Lena Ferguson of Waynesville, Missouri; a brother, Everett Stewart of the state of Illinois; a sister: May Eisenhower of the state of Illinois; 23 grandchildren. 39 great grandchildren and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; two sons: William and Paul; and a grandson.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 8, 1985 at 11:00 a.m. in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel with the Revs. James Roam, Robert Roam, and Bobby Thornton officiating.

Music was provided by Diana Gourley, organist and Paula and Sharon Roam, soloist.

Serving as escorts were Kenny Ferguson, Gerald Roam, John Roam, Paul Roam, Roy Roam, and Brett Waterhouse. Serving as honorary escorts were the grandchildren.

Burial was in the Bethlehem Cemetery under the direction of the Waynesville Memorial Funeral Chapel.

Earl E. Payne 1901-1984

Earl E. Payne, son of Lige and Delitha Kissinger Payne, was born March 20, 1901 in Swedeborg, Missouri and departed this life May 6, 1984, at the age of 83 years, one motnh, and 16 days.

Earl was united in marriage with Effie Bartlett on August 11, 1927, and to this union was born three children, who survive.

As a young man Earl was converted and baptized into the Swedeborg Christian Church, although most of his married life he attended Elm Grove Baptist Church, which was near their home. He farmed most of his life in the Richland area.

Those left to mourn his passing are two sons: Gerald of Richland, and Don of Carrolton, Texas; one daughter, Dolores Mitchele of Muscatine, Iowa; one brother, Merrel of Richland; four sisters, Bertha Peterson and Eula York, both of Richland, Grace Manes of Swedeborg, and Cora Harris of Ashley, Missouri; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Ethel Eckman and Carmel Roam, and by his wife Effie, who passed away October 3, 1981.

Services were held Wednesday, May 9, 1984, 11:00 a.m. at the Colonial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Henry Addison officiating.

Music was provided by Dwight Roam, soloist and DeLores Shadel, organist.

Flea Hollow Cemetery is located in Pulaski County, MO., and is more commonly known as Bethlehem Cemetery.

Bethlehem Baptist Church, Pulaski County, Missouri. Organized in 1910-Built in 1938. Bethlehem Cemetery was once known as Flea Hollow Cemetery.

Bethlehem Cemetery, also referred to as Flea Hollow Cemetery, is located in Pulaski County, MO., north of Waynesville, Missouri and south of Swedeborg, Missouri. Swedeborg, Missouri was called Wood End at one time. Travel T Highway to Riverside Road. From Riverside Road, turn left on Redding Road. Bethlehem Baptist Church will be on the right and the cemetery is below the hill. This cemetery is in a very picturesque and serene setting. A refurbished mailbox near the gate near the church accepts donations for upkeep and maintenance.

Bethlehem Cemetery includes many tombstones with Swedish names and according to Tombstone Inscriptions of Pulaski County has at least 27 unmarked graves. It is believed that one of the unmarked graves belongs to Tennessee Nowland who passed while living at the Pulaski County Poor Farm in 1917.

Carmel (Payne) Roam 1902-1984

Services for Carmel Roam were held at Colonial Funeral Chapel 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 6, 1984. Officiating at the services was Minister Mike Vernon. Music was provided by Rusty Shadel, Soloist, and Marcia Shadel, Organist. Burial was in the Bethlehem Cemetery. Escorts were: Kevin Roam, dean Roam, Mark Clark, Dean Roam, Mark Clark, Steve Belsh, Jim Dippert, and James Laquey. Under the direction of Colonial Funeral Chapels of Richland, Missouri.

Carmel Roam, daughter of L.A. and Delitha Kissinger Payne, was born December 4, 1902 in Swedeborg, and departed this life on February 4, 1984 at her home in Richland.

She was united in marriage with Robert Roam on February 1, 1927, and to this union was born two children, both surviving. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister, Ethel Eckman.

Carmel lived most of her life on their farm in Pulaski County. She accepted Christ as her Saviour January 25, 1914 and became a member of the Swedeborg Church. She moved her membership to the Christian Church in Richalnd, when she made her home there. She was not only a faithful church member, but a very faithful Christian. Her church and her God were an important part of her life.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her son Lindell Roam of St. Louis; one daughter, Mrs. Louise Clark of Memphis, Indiana; two brothers, Earl and Merrel Payne both of Richland; four sisters, grace Manes of Swedeborg, Bertha Peterson and Eula York, both of Richland; Cora Harris of Ashland, Missouri; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Alfred Len Patterson 1894-1984

Alfred Len Patterson was born in Pulaski County, Missouri, April 24, 1894 to Rene and Mary Booher Peterson and departed this life on November 25, 1984 after a long illness. He had attained the age of 90 years, 7 months and 1 day.

He lived his entire life in Pulaski County and retired from Civil Service employment at Fort Leonard Wood in 1959.

Len accepted Christ as his personal saviour at Bethlehem Baptist Church when a young man.

On November 14, 1914, he was united in marriage to Lula Miller and to this union was born eight children. Len and Lula celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary quietly at their home with their children. Len was always happy to have his family with him. He was as a loving husband and father, and was endeared by other members of the family and friends.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Crocker, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons: Bill, Leonard, and Cecil; four brothers; one sister; six grandchildren and three great grand children.

Survivors include his loving wife, Lula, of the home, two sons: Robert of Fair Grove, Missouri, and Dwight of Springfield, Missouri; three daughters: Marcia Thornsberry of Crocker, Missouri, Mary Lou Meler of Swedeborg, Missouri, and Violet Baker of Richland, Missouri; one sister: Agnes Nations, Crocker, Missouri; 33 grandchildren; 56 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends.

Services were held Tuesday, November 27, 1984, 2:00 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Chapel with Floyd Barlow officiating.

Music was provided by Dwight Roam and Rusty Shadel and DeLores Shadel.

Escorts were: Darold Peterson, Ronnie Peterson, Charlie Peterson, Cecil Petetrson, R.D. Peterson, and Danny Meler.

John L.D. Manes (1880-1957)

John L.D. Manes, son of Newton and Emmeline Manes was born June 16, 1880 in Washington State, and departed this life at the Waynesville General Hospital April 7, 1957 at the age of 76 years, 8 months, and ___ days.

He was converted at the age of 20 years and joined the Swedeborg Baptist Church, at the time of his death had transferred his membership to Idumea Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful church member until God called him home.

He was united in marriage to Catherine Virginia Graves _____ ____, 1903 and to this union were eight children, four boys and four girls: Avie and _____ of Dixon, Floyd of Raymond ______, Robert of Ojai, California, Mil____ Gwin of Laquey, Lucy ______ of Raymondville, _____ Deardeuff of Richland, W___ and Ell May of Edgarton, ____ also he has 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Six brothers preceded him in death.

He is also survived by his wife and three sisters: Mrs. ____ York, Mrs. Fred Smith and Mrs. Carl Anderson and a host of relatives and friends.

He will be missed by all who knew him. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.

Pallbearers were Norman Manes, Ralph Manes, Willard Manes, Otis Thomas, Kermit Anderson, and Louis Graves.

Funeral services were Thursday, April 11, 1957 at ____ p.m. at the Bethlehem Church near Swedeborg, Missouri with Rev. Virgil Manes officiating. Interment was in the Bethlehem Cemetery under the direction of the Hedges Funeral Home of Waynesville.

Della Frances (Simmons) Adams 1929-2009

Della Frances Adams was born on April 7, 1929, in Monroe, Arkansas, a daughter of Houston Davis and Naomi Frances (Poe) Simmons, and departed this life at 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 29, 2009, in the Muskogee Regional Medical Center, Muskogee, Oklahoma. She had attained the age of 80 years, 3 months and 22 days.

Mrs. Adams was united in marriage on July 3, 1965, in East Alton, Illinois to Ephriam Thomas “Tom” Adams. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 19, 2001; her parents; one son, Sr. Staff Sgt Roger Neil Fox on August 16, 1996; one brother, James M. Simmons and two sisters, Lucille Roswell and Fern Seale.

Mrs. Adams had worked as a seamstress machine operator, retiring in 1989,before moving to Crocker in 1990. She had served 11 years with the American Lupus Society holding the positions of Board of Directors, Zone Director and Fund Raiser for Lupus research. She had written four books, “A Collection Of Poems”, “Remembering The Good Old Days”, “Waltonesque Stories Of Growing Up During The Depression” and “Grandma Maggie”, with proceeds being donated to the Atlanta Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America. She enjoyed quilting and donated her quilts to raffle for the Lupus Foundation.

Those left to mourn the passing of Mrs. Adams include: two sons, Tony Fox, Little Rock, Arkansas and Scott Fox, Brighton, Illinois; one daughter, Sharon Nichols, Stigler, Oklahoma; one brother, Houston D. Simmons, Alexander, Arkansas; eight grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services were conducted for Mrs. Adams at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, August 4, 2009, in the Long Funeral Home, Crocker. “Angel” and “Down The River” were played for the funeral service.

Interment was in the Bethlehem Cemetery, Swedeborg, under the direction of the Long Funeral Home, Crocker.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Atlanta Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America with envelopes available at the Long Funeral Home, Crocker.

WILLIAM BUCKNER LEDBETTER WAS BORN IN TENNESSEE IN 1844 AND DIED AT THE HOME OF HIS SON JOHN LEDBETTER NEAR SWEDEBORG SEPT 22 1929- BEING 85 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH.

HE WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE TO JULIA ROAM ABOUT 1863 AND TO THIS UNION 15 CHILDREN WERE BORN, SEVEN SONS AND EIGHT DAUGHTERS,. HIS WIFE AND 5 CHILDREN PRECEDED HIM TO THE SPIRIT WORLD.

MR LEDBETTER OBEYED THE GOSPEL WHEN ABOUT 30 YEARS OLD UNDER THE PREACHING OF ELDER J. J. LANE AND DIED AS HE HAD LIVED TO THE CAUSE OF CHRIST.

HE LEAVES TO MOURN HIM 4 SONS AND 8 DAUGHTERS JOE MAY LEDBETTER OF CROCKER, HETTIE MANES OF ALMA ,ARKANSAS, ANNIE BROWN OF CROCKER, JOHN AND TOM LEDBETTER OF SWEDEBORG, MOLLIE HARRISON OF RICHLAND,
ROSA MCDOWELL OF OSSAWATOMIE, KANSAS, PEARL HARRISON OF KANSAS CITY, BOB LEDBETTR OF CROCKER, AND LULA LANSING OF OSSAWATOMIE KANSAS, AND A NUMBER OF GRANDCHILDREN- BESIDES OTHER RELATIVES AND FRIENDS

- BESIDES HIS OWN CHILDREN HE REARED 2 GRANDCHILDREN


FUNERAL SERVICES WERE CONDUCTED BY THE WRITER AT THE HICKORY GROVE CHURCH MONDAY SEPT 23RD, AFTER WHICH HE WAS LAID TO REST IN THE SILENT CITY OF THE DEAD NEARBY:
THERE TO AWAIT THE GREAT TRUMPET AT WHICH TIME ALL THE
SLEEPING NATIONS OF THE DEAD WILL COME FOURTH. THEY THAT
HAVE DONE GOOD, TO LIFE ETERNAL: THEY THAT HAVE DONE EVIL
TO EVERLASTING SHAME AND CONTEMPT.
AND NOW WE BOW OUR HEADS IN HUMBLE SUBMISSION TO HIM WHO
DOETH ALL THINGS WELL, AND UNTIL THAT GREAT DAY DEAR
FATHER FAREWELL.
