Hale Cemetery

Hale Cemetery is located in Pulaski County, MO., on Fort Leonard Wood, near the Eastern Boundary line of the military installation. It is also reported as being just outside of the Fort Wood boundaries on Thatch Lane, near J Highway. It is possible that the confusion lies in it's proximity to the boundary of Ft. Leonard Wood and National Forest boundary.

It is an old family/neighborhood graveyard. As the name implies, at least 5 members of the Hale family are buried here. Other family names that have tombstones here include Deer, Duncan, Jones, Logan, Stevenson, Steward, Thornhill, and Wade. The earliest marked graves date to 1872 and are both for young children, Edward S, Hale, and Lorinda Logan. Most of the tombstones are from the mid to late 1800’s, but burials continued here long after Ft. Wood was established. The Reverend J.J. Watts referred to this graveyard as Sam R. Hale Cemetery. It is believed that Samuel Right Hale was the original landowner. His wife, Mary A. Hale, was buried here in May of 1879.

The Ft. Leonard Wood Guidon published the following about Hale Cemetery in 2008:

"The Hale Cemetery is the final resting place of a Korean War veteran who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Another man buried there, John H. Logan, was possibly the commanding officer of 1-6 Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War."

*Editor's note: The confusion in the location of Hale Cemetery is due to a boundary change of Fort Leonard Wood, which occurred in 1997. The cemetery no longer lies within the boundaries of the military reservation and the state of Hale Cemetery has declined rapidly since it is no longer under Ft. Wood's care.

Hale Cemetery is under the care of the National Forestry Service and Project Preservation is working with them to help maintain this cemetery.
