James Wayne "Jim" Smith 1941-2009

James Wayne Smith, of Jefferson City, was born on February 22, 1941, in St. Louis, a son of Charles Richard and Dorothy Lee (Kerley) Smith, and departed this life at 2:00 a.m., Sunday, March 15, 2009, at his residence in Jefferson City. Jim had attained the age of 68 years and 23 days.

Jim was united in marriage on April 1, 1964, in Oakland, California to Sharon Diane Bain. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A resident of the Jefferson City area since 1970, Jim graduated fro Dixon High School in 1960. Her served four years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Ranger. He had worked for the United Telephone Company and America Telephone and Telegraph Company. Jim retired in July 2003 from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Troop F Communication Division in Jefferson City after thirty-three years of service.

Jim enjoyed photography, art and working with youth groups. He was both a 4-H leader and a scoutmaster for Troop 10, Jefferson City. He was a member of the Jefferson City Art Club and a founder of the Jefferson City Photography Club in 1985.

Those left to mourn the passing of Jim include: his wife Mrs. Sharon Smith, Jefferson City; three children and their spouses, Ernest W. Smith and Christina Hortsman, Jenks, Oklahoma; Jason R. Smith and Katey Carter, Holts Summit; Robert Winkelman and Jennifer C. Smith, Tebbetts; grandchildren, Megan, Nathan, Danny , David, Matthew and Beth Smith; Christina and Cassy Smith and Daniel Scurlock; Lucas, Tanner, Skyler and Cori Winkelman; one brother, Paul H. Smith, Dixon; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary E. Askins, Madison Heights, Michigan; Shirley and David Sharp, Rolla; and many other relatives and friends.

Private graveside services were conducted for Jim on Monday, March 16, 2009, in the Seaton Cemetery, near Dixon, under the direction of the Long-Gilbert Funeral Home, Dixon.
