Ethelyn grew up in the Waynesville area. She attended the Deerlick school. After graduation, she attended Southwest Missouri Teachers' College and later received her degree from Lincoln University in Jefferson City.
Ethelyn was a charter member of the First Christian Church of Waynesville, and later moved her membership to the Buckhorn Christian Church.
In November of 1924, Ethelyn united in marriage with Cecil Hammock. On June 21, 1940, she was united in marriage with Clarence Jewell.
Ethelyn taught school in the area for over 46 years. She has touched many lives during a lifetime of service in our area. She will be sadly missed by her family and all those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Paul Long, of Waynesville; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Kathy Jewell of Tulsa, OK; a sister Maxine Vandergriff of Columbia, MO; a brother, Ernest Gladden of Laquey; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several other relatives and friends.
Ethelyn is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Earl Gladden, and a sister, Sylvia Lundstrom.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16, in the Waynesville Memorial Chapel with Virgil White officiating. Music was provided by vocalist Gilbert Crismon and organist Dorothy Moore. Serving as escorts were Floyd Atterberry, George Berry, Danny Dye, Carl Gladden, Bill Hammock, Clifford Lundstrom, Dru Rayl, Lee Rayl, Roy Rayl, Jim Sizemore, Vern Smith, Emerson Storie and Mayfield Wilson.
Burial was in the Colley Hollow Cemetery, Waynesville, MO., under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel. A scholarship fund has been established in the name of Ethelyn June Jewell.
