John Wayne Montz 1946-2012

John Wayne Montz, son of the late Robert Grant and Ella Mae (Irby) Montz, was born March 6, 1946 in Charleston, Illinois.

In 1968, John was united in marriage to Catherine Mary Stingley in Charleston, Illinois. They were blessed with one son, David. John and Catherine shared many wonderful years together until her passing in January of 1982.

John served in the United States Army and retired after many years of service. He had attained the rank of Sergeant First Class and earned several awards and commendations; some of which include: Army Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3), Good Conduct Medal (6), National Defense Service Medal w/1 Bronze Service Star, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Army Commendation Medal w/3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Campaign Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Overseas Service Bar (2) and Army Achievement Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster.

John eventually moved to the Waynesville area and enjoyed his time here. He enjoyed working with his friends on small engine repair and enjoyed getting together with friends. He will be sadly missed by all those that knew and loved him.

John passed away at 7:40 a.m. Thursday, February 2, 2012 in the Phelps County Regional Medical Center of Rolla, Missouri having attained the age of 65 years, 10 months and 27 days.

John leaves to cherish his memory his son: David Wayne Montz (Shelia) and their children: Brandon, Joshua and Catherine; two brothers: Jack and Jerry Montz; one sister: Bonnie Sue McNary; good friend: Thomas Walter Lynn and his wife Marguerite; other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by one sister Barbara Schaleaberger and one younger brother.

Services with military honors were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, 2012 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Chaplain (CPT) Ismael Serrano officiating. The songs “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art” were played. Military honors were provided by the United States Army of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
