Jeretta Pearl (Helton) Laughlin 1910-2007

Jeretta Pearl Laughlin was born December 12, 1910 at home in the community of Big Piney, Missouri, in Pulaski County. She was one of four girls born to the union of the late Newman and Anna (Page) Helton.

Jeretta went home to be with her Lord the evening of February 15, 2007 at the Life Care Center in Waynesville, Missouri, at the age of 96 years, 2 months and 3 days.

On June 7, 1924 there was a double wedding at Big Piney. Glen Long married Ruth Bailey and Jeretta married Roy E. Laughlin. Jeretta and Roy shared seven children: Claude, Jim, Louise, Maxine, Katherine, Shirley and an infant daughter that died at birth, and 39 years of marriage before Roy preceded her in death on September 20, 1963.

Jeretta accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. At the time of her passing, she was a member of the Westside Baptist Church, where she had taught an adult women's Sunday school class, consisting of 19 "girls" as she so lovingly referred to them, for 14 years.

Jeretta was a courageous, quick-witted, loving wife, mother, grandmother and neighbor. Her delight was to help the needy and small children. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed quilting, reading and gardening.

Jeretta did not wish anyone to look upon her passing with pity, but to know what a full life she had, and how thankful she was for the good things which God allowed her to experience before she went forever to be with Him. As her time with us neared its' end, and before losing her vision, Jeretta read His word and talked to God with increased excitement and frequency. Her influence "spilled over" into the life of many.

Jeretta leaves to cherish her memory, five children: Jim Laughlin and his wife, Mary and Louise Garzelli and her husband, Jack all of Waynesville, MO, Maxine Hembree and her husband, Les of Tiburon, CA, Katherine Tarr and her husband, Curtis of Walnut Creek, CA and Shirley Forinash and her husband, Terry of Columbia, MO; one daughter-in-law: Pauline Laughlin of Waynesville, MO; one sister: Anna Jean Mayor and her husband, George of Jefferson City, MO; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, husband and infant daughter, Jeretta was also preceded in death by one son, Claude Laughlin and two sisters, Mary Breeden and Betty Jerebek.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 18, 2007 in the Memorial Chapel of Waynesville/St. Robert with Rev. Richard Breeden and Rev. Lindell Shelden officiating. Brent Garzelli, Jeretta's grandson, read a letter from Mike Brown and gave a beautiful eulogy. Jeretta's daughter, Katherine Tarr recalled her wonderful memories of her mother. Pianist Becky Lercher accompanied Soloist Gilbert Crismon as he sang "Just A Rose Will Do", "Beyond The Sunset" and "Beulah Land". Serving as escorts were Bill, Bob and David Laughlin, Brent Garzelli, Eric and Steve Hembree and Tom Crow.

Burial followed in the Waynesville Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. John Shaw officiating. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapel of Waynesville/St. Robert.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Jeretta Laughlin to the Lake Ozark Area Home Health & Hospice and may be left at Memorial Chapel of Waynesville/St. Robert.

  1. I found this on the Jeretta and was very touched. My name is Jeretta Wilson and my Mother is Jeretta Nadine, my Grand Aunt was Jeretta Ewing, and her Grandmother was Jeretta Ewing, These ladies go back to others of the same name to 1712. They all were fine women who loved their families and the Lord. jwnw1021@centurylink.net
