John Anderson Smith 1812-1922

John Anderson Smith, who made his home with his grandson, Harvey Smith, near the Gasconade, South of Dixon, died at 7:00 a.m. last Wednesday (August 30, 1922) of dropsy.

Uncle John was born in Tennessee in February 1812. He was the oldest man in this part of the state and one of the oldest citizens of this section, being 110 years, 5 months, and 29 days old. He came to Missouri in an ox wagon in 1858. He was married to Miss Mary Harmon in 1830 and five children were born to them, of which only Mrs. C.H. Stroupe survives. Mrs. Harmon died in 1904. Beside Mrs. Stroupe, 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren survive. Interment was at Pisgah Thursday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. T.S. King.

  1. Had not seen this obit, just articles on John A. that included some of info. But we have discovered that he really wasn't 110 years old, but had trouble remembering when he was born. In the first census we can find him in, 1850, he claims he was 20 years old, making him born in 1930. So he couldn't have married Mary in 1930. His first child was born in 1848.
    In 1860 he claimed he was 30. 1870 he was 45 (jumped 5 years) 1880 he said 52, by 1900 he was 70...which would be consistent, but 1910 he claimed 87. So his actual age was closer to 92....not 110!
    He was my g-g-grandfather through Mary's sister, Rebecca!
