Bert William Merrill 1914-1961

Death Claims Bert W. Merrill, Prominent Garageman, Machinist

Bert W. Merrill who for many years had operated a repair garage and heavy machinery business in Waynesville, passed away last Thursday evening, about 7 o’clock, following a long illness from a heart condition. There were few citizens in this area as well known as Bert Merrill, who, although handicapped, was one of the best machinists in this part of the state. Much of the equipment which he operated, he built in his shop on Highway 66 east. Mr. Merrill was always one to answer any call from a person in distress and his cheerful and friendly manner made him a host of friends and the citizens of this area will sadly miss this fine, cheerful person, and we at the Democrat join his many friends in offering our sympathy to Mrs. Merrill and their six sons, one of whom is only about four weeks of age.

Bert William Merrill, son of Fred and Nora Merrill, was born February 1, 1914 in Waynesville and departed this life February 2, 1961 at the General Hospital at the age of 47 years and one day.

He was united in marriage to Ola Williford April 25, 1942 and to this union six sons were born.

He is survived by his wife, Ola, and sons: Bert William Junior, Freddy Harold, Tommy Joe, Kenneth Gene, Jimmie Dean, and Ralph Edward, all of the home: also two aunts, Mrs. Hazel Gann of Gainsville, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Myrtle Scriviner of Eldon, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Having accepted Christ as his personal saviour some time ago, he had planned to follow his Lord in baptism, but due to his health was not able to do so.

He was a good neighbor, always willing to help those in need. He loved his family and provided for them well.

Funeral services were held February 5, 1961 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist church in Waynesville with Rev. Norman Sanders officiating, assisted by Rev. Cleveland Horne. Burial was in Waynesville Memorial cemetery under direction…
